PODCAST: Match SIM vs Richmond

Demonland

Recommended Posts

In the past two years, we’ve taken the first practice match seriously fielding our best team for at the least the first four “quarters” and used the second match to try new players.

I was unable to watch Sunday’s match but from the post-game thread it seems we used this match to try new players in new positions etc. Do you think we may have reversed our approach to this year’s practice matches and will use the Carlton match to field a stronger team and really see where we’re at?

  • Demonland changed the title to PODCAST: Match SIM vs Richmond

With our season spread over 25 weeks (23 games plus two byes), plus two additional on two weeks of practise games, the club has a long season to keep players fresh and uninjured. @binman does the approach to the weekends game show an evolving strategy to player management from the club, compared to previous years?

There was some changes made last year following 2022 after a lot of players ended the year banged up and sore. This year's fixture presents more opportunities for extended rest and [looks over shoulder] loading, where '22 and '23 did not.

This question is really a tee up for Binman to further soothe your MFCSS @Demonland - you shouldn't let the result or performance trigger you too badly.

@binman I don't know if you were talking strictly about Melbourne, but Nick Daicos, Jack Crisp, Jack Sinclair are half backs that go through the middle regularly. Rivers did it at times early last year. Jayden Short, Liam Duggan too.

Goody catching up? :goody:

Ta.

Do those players swap with each other? For example Sinclair comes from HB to the middle and Crisp takes his spot at HB?

Will be interesting to See if Goody uses Salo the same way, and if so who he then might swap with (he wouldn't necessarily  have to swap directly i guess, for example sparrow goes  the bench, salo to the center and say bowser comes on and goes to HB)

Nothing wrong with Goody taking a lead from other coaches, they have cribbed plenty of his notes too.

I would have thought we'd be able to navigate it quite easily given Gus can play in defence

Good point.

Would actually make a bit of sense - good way to get both Gus and Salo some mid time without losing anything defensively.

Did you watch the last 3 periods of the scratch match?

If so, thoughts on Salo as a mid?

Looked good, but tough to take much out of it given the opposition

Just catching up with the great podcast - thanks so much.  Fantastic to have you all back.

You were mentioning that Clarrie isn't yet fully fit for round 0 - I believe that he has been working his [censored] off when away from the club, put in all the running and gym stuff; if so why isn't he ready for round 0?

I mentioned that. My thinking was two fold.

One, even if he has been working his backside off he still missed a chunk of preseason and the sort of match conditioning training might give him. That said he did look in good nick.

But my concern more about taking the pressure off him and allowing him to ease into the season. But with all the press about us atm perhaps clarry wont get the attention he might have, so perhaps that's not such a worry.

We'll get a good sense of where their thinking is at next week in terms of whether they pick him, and if they do if he starts and/r how many minutes he gets.

Another thing to consider in regards to Clarry's readiness from Opening Round is what I think Troy Chaplin mentioned in the post game presser is that he missed a chunk of the "education" training in terms of midfield/team tactics etc. Sure he could probably be brought up to speed and let's be honest he could easily slot back in but that's also a factor along with any fitness and pressure issues that may be present.

I finished the podcast last night - it was fantastic to have you guys back! I also just wanted to comment that @binman's audio was really good - sounded well insulated and clear.

My audio was crap because I had to use the audio on my channel from one of my other recording sources because my SD card on my mixer was corrupted and needed to be formatted.

Thankfully I have 3 different sources saving the audio for just such occasions.

That might be because he loves the sound of his voice as much as the sight of his written word.

Yes this is a gag and no offence is intended.

    CONSISTENCY by The Oracle

"I think we have got a team that can win a premiership, and if we get in this year, I don't think there is a team that is going to want to play us. This year is not a write-off, I don't concede that. Not at all." — Collingwood President Jeff Browne. I love this sort of optimism from the Magpie President after his club’s eleven goal defeat at the hands of the fast rising Hawks. It’s consistent with the fighting spirit of the club that won last year’s flag.  I only wish I could say the s

    FEARS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne’s worst fears about the absence of Max Gawn were realised when it received a shellacking from Fremantle’s ruckmen Sean Darcy and Luke Jackson who dominated the hit out tally in their game at Optus Stadium on Sunday by a massive 47 to 19. As a result, the 50-point deficit at the end of the game proved to be a loss that was long foreseen that was two years in the making and demonstrated a complete lack of hindsight and planning from the club. To add insult to injury, Jackson was a D

    RAIN CHECK by Whispering Jack

The Frankston Dolphins broke a run of six straight losses against their neighbours, the Casey Demons and kept their hopes for a long-awaited return to the VFL finals alive with a 27 point victory over at Kinetic Stadium. Casey was welcomed to the Peninsula by grey skies, heavy rain and angry seas with threatening white-capped waves whipped up by gale force winds. After a slow start in the opening term when they failed to take advantage of the breeze, it appeared that the Demons had decided
