Big game this Thursday for Kate Hore and her Demon Queens.

I know there is a ‘AFL Womens League’ board but I don’t want to talk about that - I want to talk about the Melbourne Demons on the Melbourne Demons board.

The dominant, amazing, and humble team that deserves eternal hellfire and idol devotion.

Also, no one goes to that board and there wasn’t even a match thread…

Well said, rpfc.

Maddi Gay’s 50th game AND her birthday this Thursday. Up against Geelong in Geelong so it won’t be a walk in the park. Geelong have only dropped one match and that was in a low-scoring affair vs North who are one of the stronger teams. It’ll be a challenge but with belief and momentum on our side I’m confident we’ll win.

Anyone who can make it to Geelong should do themselves a favour and come and watch a team at the very top of their game.

edit: we’ll know officially if Maddi’s good to go after this afternoon’s training session. We’re confident she’ll be right.

The team has been fantastic - don't get me wrong - but looking at the four games played and the opposition in those games, it would be fair to say that we haven't really beaten a quality team. Two opponents have yet to win a game this year and the other two have one win each. Geelong is really the team's first real challenge for the current season.

So, we shouldn't get too carried away ... just yet.

Sensible point.

I looked at the North Lions game last weekend. We're ahead of both teams in my opinion. I haven't seen the Crows play yet.

We have a very balanced team. Good defensively, run off half back, a great ruck combo in Pearce and Campbell, tough contested mids, Hanks, outside run with Mackin, x factor with Bannan and the best KPF pair in Zanker and Harris in the league.

We're going to be hard to stop. Prelim for sure and just a matter of whether injuries or bad luck derail us. Which can always happen of course.

Geelong have a good defence but are a bit suspect up forward.

Agreed - we shouldn’t be getting too far ahead of ourselves. As we’ve learned over the past two years, it’s not right to go the early crow.

Absolutely atrocious scheduling - on one hand you have the AFL tying future AFLW season expansion to viewer numbers, and then you have Thursday night games in Geelong during GF week. Makes you wonder how serious they really are about having more games.

As others have said, this will be a much tougher game than anything we've had this season. Is it true that we've never played Geelong in this competition? If so, that is bizarre.

We should have too many avenues to goal, but our defence will need to hold up. Last time they were really challenged was in the 2nd quarter against Collingwood, and a few issues were apparent then. It will be interesting to see who Gay replaces, no obvious candidate so perhaps another resting?

Yes, this is true. Haven’t even played them in a practice match. And it’s not liked they’ve just joined the comp, they joined in 2019.

Thls is the closest we’ve been to playing them…

Is that a display cupboard or your pantry?!

If that’s my pantry I need to lift my cleaning game. 😁

Great start to the season in terms of wins, now a game clear.  However, what is more important is the way they are winning.  Excellent team system to works with the strengths of the players.  Not losing anyone show how tight they are.  They also have a strong belief n themselves to overrun opposition sides.

While I agree with not getting carried away, our record over the last 13 games is pretty incredible, including lack of opposition goals in second halves and in particular last quarters.

It extends further back than 4 wins this year.

100% we need to beat the top teams over the next 4-5 weeks, and until then we should be circumspect. But I don't think this is "they haven't beaten anyone yet" territory.

OK, so now I'm intrigued as to your collector interests. Milo tins don't pin this down much!

I've been waiting for us to play Geelong in Geelong since Geelong came into the competetion.  Casey may as well be on the other side of the planet from here. I'll be there with my three girls, hoping for another impressive display.

Im very pleased for you, Viper. You're in for a treat, even if the result doesn't go our way (wash my mouth out!) Do some barracking for me, then, you and the offspring, while I'm laid up here on the other side of the planet.

Enjoy!

I do find it funny that we, as a club seem to be so linked to Geelong's ground that even the women are being scheduled there, and probably will be for the next 20 years...

Actually we did play Geelong in a "match simulation", i.e. a practice practice match, a few years ago.  See attached photographic proof. 😁

Funnily enough, the photo is of Jackie Parry - now with the Cats.

It won't be surprising if someone comes away from Thursday with reason to miss a game or two but, of course, hopefully not.

if not, we are just that game away from having a fully available list, in an incredibly stable, only Daisy-less, team.

Remarkable.

You’re right, Craig. In January 2021 there was an official practice match. (Melb 8.7.55 def. Geel 5.4.34).

In January 2020 there was an unofficial practice match. Don’t know the scores with that one but I think it was a win for us.

People on here often accuse me of writing excessively long posts about things. So...

Crush. Kill. Destroy. Annihilate. Obliterate. Pulverize. Smash. Raze. Ruin.

I want this current Demon team to become the Miyamoto Musashi of the Women's League. The unreachable legend. The example which generations to come will strive to emulate knowing that they can never truly do so. Not merely the greatest there is, but the greatest there could ever be.

And also to beat Geelong on Thursday.

Really looking forward to watching this game.  Unfortunately, cannot be in person.  Just love watching this team play and their progression each year has been amazing.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
