12 months ago the talk about Ashton Moir was 'possible number 1' and all the top pick hype about freakish athleticism and good kicking off both feet.

Clearly something has gone wrong this season and he's now barely scraping into top 30 lists, if that.

On the face of it, a 188cm, skilled and unpredictable forward/half forward would seem like a great selection in the 20s for us, but clearly there's a lot to know.

Anyone have insight into what stalled for Moir and how he might go in future?

Any relation to Andrew?

Edit.  Probably not SA kid with WA connections

Jack Darling Mark II????

Found this from Rookie Me Central:

“Q: Surely Ashton Moir makes this list (top 25 I believe at the time)

A: As any keen draft watcher would know, Moir came into the year touted as a top five prospect but hasn’t quite gotten going as a top-ager. He battled through injury early in the year and struggled to regain his confidence, underperforming throughout the National Championships. However, Moir is beginning to show positive signs with Glenelg and has returned to the Reserves grade, so hopefully a League debut is just around the corner. There are so many top traits to work with and great potential to enhance, but also glaring areas of improvement that have seen Moir fall down the order. He could end up being a second or third round bargain given his upside. Happy to be proven wrong.“

This would be a huge gamble. High risk. High reward.  Remember Jack Darling. Somehow clubs were scared to pick him. A risk? Wow. I’d love to have drafted him all those years ago. Moir is a huge talent. Injury and supposedly work ethic questioned.  Hmmm sounds like Darling.

Moir has to be still strongly considered.  He’s a good mover. A good mark. A proven goalkicker. Left foot. Right foot.

Lots of work to do to get to know the kid. Is he really keen on footy? I mean lives it. If not, you’d question talent being enough. Plenty of huge talent don’t have to drive to succeed. Would be a risk but a huge reward if he can combine talent and hard work.

Moy-a.

It's not often you get a shot at having a potential top-10 talent of the draft come through late in the second round.

I think he also suits our needs as a point of difference capable of making our attacking movement a little bit unpredictable.

If available at our late pick (nominally 42, probably 38ish) then I think he's worth the risk.

Caveat - only if we're sure we can still get Kynan Brown because I'm a family club kind guy. Coincidentally, Brown is the perfect contrast in that we would be taking him quite sure of the attitude, commitment and workrate, but also knowing the limitations.

For context, here he is in the APRIL power rankings. At 2.

His SA Coach saying he is one of the most talented kids he has seen.

Could be a great later pick.

Will be this years wildcard pick. Could prove to be the best player in this draft alongside Reid … or lose his desire and be delisted after 2 years.

Now that he has gone to Carlton, I hope it's the latter.

Both parents and his brother represented Australia in Taekwondo. His mother represented Australia at the 2000 Olympics. Thinking motivation and a competitive sporting ethos probably won't be an issue.

He had injury issues which probably explains his slide as a potential top pick.

Could be a good late 1st round pick up for the Blues. Can be an understudy to Jack Martin and cut his teeth in the VFL for a year or two.
