But the real reason they picked the Thursday night (which i think is true actually) is they know they are going to get beaten and are desperate to get as much time as possible between the loss and the semi final against the blues - which will surely be Friday week.

I'm pretty sure I've heard or seen something official from the AFL that the decision was made that the Thursday night slot was always going to be given to the team finishing top as a "reward" for finishing first so as to give them the longest break should they lose their first final and need to play the following week. What I don't know is whether that's a bit of post-facto rationalisation once the AFL knew that Collingwood was going to finish first.

To be fair, it's a logical decision.

    This is what I heard too and think it's more likely than the "choice" rumour.

    I've been impressed with Murphy's year. If he's only half fit, that can only be a positive.

    Interesting that the last two years, the minor premiers in Geelong and Melbourne got the Saturday week 1 game.

    Most teams have only one elite intercept defender - but we have two in May and Lever, and Petty too when he was down back. I'm sure a big factor in Disco getting selected (and i think he'll hold his spot) is he is also an excellent interceptor. 

    Which means that teams can't focus on shutting down the one elite intercepting defender the way they can with say Andrews at the Lions or Allir at Port. 

    The Pies have three elite intercepting defenders - Moore, Murphy and Quaynor. 

    Intercept in the back half is critical to our game plan, but i'd argue event more important for the Pies as their whole game plan is based on fast transition from the back half, and that method is reliant on intercepts. 

    Moore is coming back from a hammy, so at the very least he would have been off legs for a bit so his running power might be off.

    If Quaynor plays on Koz, as he has done the last couple of times we've played them, Koz might play out of the square as he did last week, which negates the impact of any intercepts by Quaynor (becuase they are not up on the half back flank).

    Which means Murphy becomes even more important to them. Fingers crossed he is a non starter.

    As I have expressed before in another post, the pressure at the source of Collingwood's transition game is key, in my view (see McVee,Salem and Lever).

    We must win the territory contest at all cost!

    We shut down their run by beating them at contest and blocking the corridor. This had a 2 fold affect. They played the boundary more and when they did go corridor or we intercepted anywhere we had players on through the middle. It was glorious in its simplicity and execution.

    I'm sure Binman can put that into twice as many words and throw in some supporting stats :)

    Deny them the footy, they love the turnover and run in numbers of the back of them.

    I noticed on the Ch7 item of the Filth training on the 'G today that in what was supposed to be a burst run-through by Moore, he looked slow, slower than desirable for a clearing backman; he also restricted the length of his running gait, not bringing the leg all the way forward and thus, not stretching the hamstring as it normally would be utilised. Get him to run at full pace, early, Dees - he'll get subbed if he makes the team.

    Jack and Sparrow, hit men right in the two-way guts. May is overdue for some maiming, as well. Just call it 'mongrel' - even Kozzie can dish it out and Chandler could try a few moments of close contact.

    I'd argue Howe is an elite interceptor too and Maynard goes alright, but agree with your first three selections, Boss.

    Their backline is full of great interceptors and runners. But can any of them defend one on one under pressure?

    I haven't noticed this. I've noticed this line of thought that he's susceptible close to goal, come up a bit recently though. I hope so. He's a very good player. I'd back Koz to get a few on anyone if he plays deep though.

    He really lowered his colours to Charlie Cameron, which to be fair is not that unusual. Cameron is an insanely good player. But he plays very close to goal and that helped. Also helped they were without Moore for that game.

    Either way Kosi close to goal is the stuff of nightmares for defenders. 
     

    On the other side, so is Elliot who didn’t play on KB but has a long tradition of tearing us apart. Hibbo has to come into consideration for mine, although I cannot tell you who comes out of that backline to make way unless we drop Turner and go small.

      Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

    • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

    • REPORT: West Coast

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
