Backs

  • May and Lever aren't a massive problem if we deliver like we did against Geelong. We'll get smashed if forced to bomb it in though.
  • I wonder who will play on Steven May. Wouldn't mind putting Treacy on him. Rough him up a little

Mids

  • I look forward to seeing how we go against Melbourne’s midfield.
  • Hunter's 90% game time is going to be a challenge to fill without costing something elsewhere. That's before Oliver potentially out. I'd like all the help we can get against Melbourne.
  • Hunter plays 90% of the game on the field allowing their rotations elsewhere, it's a supreme effort and a real strength of the Melbourne side that such hard running roles (both wings) spend almost the whole game on the grass. To have to replace that player with another is not going to be as simple as the next one up, they will need to change their entire rotations plan.
  • Highly disruptive to lose either Hunter or Langdon.
  • Hunter has a real habit of playing his best games against us so I am taking it as a pretty significant out.
  • They're very lucky Viney didn't also get a week.
  • Aish to Trac?
  • Looks like Oliver's out. Out of 46 players on the park is he the one you'd least want to be without?
  • Back Ras to give Trac are hard time all game, would also be a good learning experience for the young bloke as Petraca is probably the best comparison to Ras as a player.
  • In our dreams Ras turns out to be like Petracca. That is a very high bar.
  • We don't need to bring in a kid to stop Trac.
  • Give Ras a run with role on Petracca. Could move Aish to the sub role or put him back in defense.

Jackson

  • Key match ups are: Gawn and Grundy vs Darcy and Jackson, and May and Lever vs Treacy and Amiss. We give up 200 games vs Gawn and Grundy and over 300 games vs Lever and May. We will have to play out of our skins to win this one.
  • In a perfect world Jackson will make the difference on the weekend.
  • In a perfect world (for us) we win by 200+ so Jackson's got his work cut out kicking 34 goals this week to be the difference.
  • Amiss needs those goals. Jackson can have the goal assists. Only way he'll get noticed by the rising star committee.
  • Got a feeling Jackson is either BOG or has an absolute shocker tbh.
  • If the crowd treats him like we treated Lobb, I'm not sure if he could handle it?
  • Should be a great game. Would be absolutely epic if LJ tears them apart and Freo fans drown out the home fans like last year, legit sounded like a Freo home game.
  • Whenever players that have left us first come up against us at home they have a mare. Kinda expect Jackson to be a bit down with so much interest in how he plays, and extra attention from his old team mates.
  • Jackson is a premiership player at Melbourne and is a player their fans generally quite liked. Doubt it’s anywhere near the same level.
  • Maybe, however Jackson when down in the forward line causes them real headaches as they have been playing Rivers in the midfield. Their third tall in defense is missing and I expect that they may bring in Tomlinson because of this.
  • Darcy and Jackson will hold their own easily, Darcy has done it before. If Lycett can do the job he did then our rucks can do it.

Grasping at straws award

  • 8 wins from 17 games at MCG against the Demons with a % of 100.55. So we have decent record against them there. Admitting we beat up on them during the Ross Lyon era when they were beyond putrid.

QD's personal favorite

  • We have never lost to Naarm.

Did I read that correct?  Someone is expecting Jackson to kick 34 goals against us? They do know the goal kicking individual record in a match is 19, by Fred Fanning, don't they?

It's a joke Katrina.

And it's 18!

Good luck with that, chumps.

We’re Melbourne supporters. We’re above that.

They can’t even get a feeling right over there! You can’t hedge your bets when you have a feeling!

I assume it's Neil Erasmus. Pick 10 in the 2021 draft. Listed as 190cm but he's just a kid, Trac would destroy him.

I also wish luck to anyone trying to rough up Steven May...

Fanning's first 18 shots were all goals.  He missed his 19th late in the last quarter.

Needed Chocko’s advice on technique?

@Deemania since 56 why the laughing emoji for my purely factual Fanning post?

In celebration of the initial fact that he got 18 - then, the irony of missing the 19th - and in recollections of previous decades watching footy with my father; I had asked if Fanning ( I was too young to see him play) was as good as the FFwds of the Jesalenko, Hudson, et al era and his reply was 'Far Ken much better .. unstoppable!' It all made me smile.

More fun facts about Fred Fanning:

-  His 97 goals that year were the highest of any Melbourne player before or since.

-  The game where he kicked 18 was the last game of the season in 1947.

-  His next game was for Hamilton in the Western District League where he was offered a coaching position for an amount of money four times his VFL pay and Melbourne couldn't/wouldn't match it.

-  He kicked 22 goals in one of his games for Hamilton.

Lol that he'll take out Petracca on the back of 8 games

Somebody had a delusion moment with that statement on tackling The Tracc.

He must have been very disappointed. After all, he went into that game only needing 21 to kick the ton.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

  • PREGAME: Brisbane

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
