Underground handballs are fine. It's the handballs over the back of the head from anyone but Oliver who are too flashy IMO.

    He’d be a nightmare to defend - can’t just put your hands up to block a handball you also have to think about defending down low.

    reminds me a bit of keeping up to the stumps to a medium/quick - they’re generally not looking for the stumping, they’re looking to keep the batsman honest, keeping them further back on the crease so they can’t get to the pitch of the ball as easily.  Maybe Hunter throws these little dinky unders in to keep the defender honest?

    n.b. I never kept up to the stumps to a medium or quick…. Way too much of a pea heart.

    Prime Lachie Hunter was absolutely a line breaker. Could still be if we gave him the ball first option when he was in space - not by leg speed but by the speed of his brain creating overlap by switching from defence to attack.  We make life very hard for him by mucking around with it before it gets to him when his space is closed.

    But the reality is he’s not getting the ball in space, not trusting himself to kick more than 30 on the run and is now a defensive positioning, slow safe kicks and handball player. That’s still useful, but isn’t a complete wingman at all. He’s providing little more than what JJ did last year and the attacking spark he gave us in preseason isn’t there.

    He hasn’t had many actually effective kicks in weeks. Not the Champion Data version but the real version. Quick, accurate, corridor or zone breaking.

    I’m perfectly happy with underground handballs, but what I hate are look away handballs. So often, they miss the target, or even worse, get to a target who is completely under pressure because the person making the hand pass has not been able to see the pressure happening.

    When Grundue did it in his game and set up a goal I thought it was genius.

    I reckon the AFL players sit around in pubs talking  about  doing it ,then they practise in the car park after training because they don't want the coach to see it on game day until they get it sorted.

    It’s amazing how expert you are at blustering a narrative that opposes what’s otherwise widely understood. Lachie Hunter has NEVER been a line-breaker in the way everyone understands it - by straight-line foot speed. Of course he’s a creative playmaker by brain speed. That however is a different ability. He is also an EXCEPTIONALLY efficient user by the metric of hitting targets and not turning the ball over. However, you believe there’s another version - your “real” version.  Not sure why you think contrary hyperbole helps your arguments, because it actually does the opposite.

    What about the under ground kicks, starting to see a few of those also?

    The bounce handpass is good for a player to dispose of the ball however for the receiver it slows the ball up after bouncing. This adds pressure to the receiver to then take and dispose of the ball. Also, quite often, the ball is fumbled as the bounce is inconsistent.

    I've been surprised by how many have occurred of late by us. Most of them have been effective. They make me nervous.

    I'd love to hear an open and frank discussion on the Bulldogs' handballing of 2016 and how much of it was planned delivery and how much luck. It was obviously a team play but they took unsighted and unusual handballing to a new level.

    they may as well allow throwing as long as 2 hands are used. it's effectively how it is now

      Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

      Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
