One swallow doesn’t make a spring. Geelong are entitled to back in their system from ‘22 again this year because (like us before them) it won them the flag the year before. 

Collingwood’s game plan gives you 2 things:

A lot of look’s because they have to go fast down the middle, which leaves them very open on rebound, and

One tempo. Geelong tried to match them at their game. Slow the ball down. Keep it off them. Teams aren’t going to let Daicos run around the back all year. He’s the guy that sets them up. I expect he’ll be roughed up and sat on a lot more.

Let’s see how other coaches test them. I doubt many will want a shoot out.

The difference from that match up last finals was that after half time the Cats could steady down and control the game and went on to win.

Maybe the Cats are good enough and deserve to be favourites imo but maybe the age factor will come into play this year.

Collingwood are danger requiring creative thinking as the season goes on which is why I referenced Ooze and Choco in my post. 

Creative thinking and surrendering control isn't Simon's way by ALL reports.

He's a coach now not a champion player.

But obviously it's just round 1.

We we learn a lot with our best 18 toninght

This week, apart from Hunter and Grundy, we have Laurie, McVee and Chandler as new blood. Add Bowey and Rivers who were not regulars last year and that's a third of the team? Enough?

I referenced the coaches elsewhere but fair call on inclusions.

I doubt anyone players,or assistants, thought Goodwins unchanging game plan over last season and failure to try and re jig the forwards in the last half was great coaching.

 

if they had given Jackson  4 weeks on his own and let Max do a Selwood freshen up anything coukd have happened..etc etc etc

The lost plenty of those games even with Max,so Jackson wouldn't have been the difference 

We will see what they can bring with them tonight.With 4 out they might lose to a tall Doggies but if they bring a good new game then .." its just round 1"

Some observations:

• The rucks had no influence on this game.  Cats relied on Stanley and Pies on Cameron. 
• Geelong's all ground defence was poor. 
• They missed Stewart and his leadership. 
• They missed Selwood and his leadership
• Stengle and De koning looked injured
• who knows how much Collingwood's domination after Howe went off was driven by emotion.

I wonder if Pies will come to rue the day they let Grundy go.  Last night wasn't exactly a ringing endorsement of that decision. 

It was a mighty win by the Pies but not sure the Cats were that bad.   imv Collinwood will be tested by a team with better ruckmen and better all team defence.  A team like the Mighty Demons!  Bring on KB Monday!!

The pies remind me of the Dees in 2021. Just can’t hate that footy. Taking the game on and backing your skills. Not overcoached. Not much stilted play.

And they made Geelong look old and slow.

Er I did mention that it was only round 1

And later observed that a loss against the Dogs would be understandable given the outs as long as we showed a new game and played well.

In particular that Geelong's all ground defence was poor.

Could not agree more.

In part that was no doubt a function of losing rotations with their injuries, but it just showed how important all team gut running (ie to press up on the ball carrier, to apply pressure to he ball carrier, to get numbers into the corridor, to cover switches, to push back to help out in defence etc etc) will be this season, and therefore how critical elite fitness will be.

The cats didn't score a goal in the last quarter. The pies scored 5.

The lack of run from the cats meant poor all team defence and an inability to create overlap themselves.

To be honest it reminded me of the last 15 minutes of our last 5-6 games.

But I'm not ready to declare them a top 4 team. In fact i think they might miss the 8.

Yes they are fit, but that game style will be incredibly hard to maintain all season.

And the Cats all team defence was really poor, for much of the match but particularly in the last when they completely ran out of gas (having so many injured players impacting rotations no doubt was a factor, but i'm really hoping it is an indication the cats are not as fit as they were at the start of 2022)

It's worth noting they weren't having to play such high pressure games against quality opponents till a third of the way through last season.

All of their games in 2023 against top 8 contenders will be huge, with massive crowds and finals like pressure games from the get go. That has to be mentally draining. 

And they continue to struggle defensively and give up too many easy goals. A situation made worse by the awful injury to their second best defender.

You'd think Howe will be out for at least half a season, maybe longer, so that is a huge loss for a team that barely had an injury last season. He is super important for them.

Scott was vocal in his opinion about playing on a badly prepared surface. Potential worry tonight.

Cox would have to be after the "dirtiest player" award for this year. He actually seems to have intent.

Yep i have become a small Daicos player fan, maybe premature.

At, or before the end of season Pies are going to lose one or two half forward flankers to other Clubs.

He’s an absolute gun. His field kicking is unbelievable. I legitimately expect him to be tagged every week now. You can’t allow a player to have 20 effective kicks across half back and through the middle, let alone one that has that much skill.

He caught teams off guard with his age, but they’ll come with a plan for him now. If they don’t he’ll be the difference in games.

Collingwood have pretty much shown their hand to the entire football world. 

Teams have a whole season to pick them apart just like they picked our chitty game plan apart after the Fremantle game.

For Starters Nick Daicos needs a Melksham type to keep him honest, just roams around with zero accountability.

To be honest Geelong's Forward pressure was pretty much non existent in the 2nd half, you have to pressure there best ball users in there D50 eg. Noble, Daicos brothers. 

The loss of Howe hurts their ball movement patterns.

I think the acquisition of Hunter on the other wing is an absolute Masterstroke, you need to accountable wingers against the Pies who can hurt them going the other way.

Cats got Murdered on the Wings last night.
