Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Its such a stupid and ill thought question from a person that has not shown anything more than ignorant cynicism and a penchant for pushing a series of uninformed agendas which lack any basic modicum of football nous or knowledge.

I have addressed the issues of run and carry ad nauseam on this site as have others. You have not shown even an inkling of understanding what's going on beyond the narrow and contracting confines of your view of football.

And the irony of it all is that you have bagged the conservative thinkers within the FD. Unbelievable.

I have addressed the question in respone to run and carry. If you really want another answer go to training and actually learn what goes on rather than making assessments that reflect that you have not and you dont understand.

I am not surprised you dont see the irony. Its like a lot of things that are missed.

Seriously does anyone honestly think any Victorian team has a chance in hell of winning the premiership in the next 3 years? I certainly dont, and blaming the coaches aint going to change that. The players arent the fit units that the interstate teams are, they arent as slick or stylish and there is no way any Victorian team can beat them. Daniher gets the best out of what he gets given end of story.

When have I been conservative?

I know you have written a lot about "run and carry" but you have not addressed why it is that the players went so over-the-top with it during the pre-season and early in the H&A season.

I have never denied not seeing them train, however you haven't exactly dismissed what I have said to be wrong.

Did Melbourne mainly focus on "run and carry" at training?

We'll have a new home and training centre within the next three years, so yeah, I honestly think we can win a premiership in the next 3 years.

Out club has made history by recording the most used players and the least number of players to play in the same team for the first 5 weeks of a season.

Hooray!

No. Things are not good but that does not justify making unsubstantiated and uninformed comments.

By the following was a statement not a question.....its a fact not opinion. ;)

"he is reluctant to play the kids !!! he has only ever done so by circumstances of adversity...he is unlike Malthouse or Sheedy or Mathews who make this a feather in their repsective bows. He doesnt do it when he can balance it better , he is simplisticly REACTIVE...has no understanding of being PROACTIVE.... ".

It is a very sensible article, but it won't help Daniher's career.

The board will look at his coaching over the past 10 years. They will most likely disregard the first 8 or so weeks of 2007 (as they should), and they will still be left with a 10 year coach who hasn't won a premiership.

IMHO, he is gone regardless of how well or poorly we play in the second half of the year.

fair summary jaded, but just not sure who to replace him with. i reckon he'll go into the media short term then come back and coach elsewhere...too much experience not too be utilised somewhere...

So we can keep holding onto our coach, until something better comes along, or we can bite the bullet (hardly though, as it has been 10 years), and give someone else a go.

Remember, all great coaches were once just assistants. There a couple of really good candidates in my mind, and a few slightly inexperienced ex-players who I would love to get as assistants at the club.

I hope that when Daniher does leave, that he takes his assistants with him. We need a completely new coaching department, hand-picked by our new coach.

There is a risk in letting go someone who you know and trust and who has been around for 10 years with a certain level of success. It is better the devil you know, but then again, how long is the club prepared to sit on the fence and say "one more year" or "maybe next year".

Replacing Daniher comes down to one question; does the club believe he can win us a premiership? If the answer is no, then what are we waiting for?

I agree its not fair to judge ND on 2007 form, due to injuries.

Judge him solely from his other 9 years at the club.

Thanks for the memories Neale, but its time to move on

Good post

if you can show otherwise...go ahead

we can all see what the styles of the Coaches Ive mentined are...and by contrast the efforts of Neale.

mate we may disagree on how you view this.. But im certainly not the only one to see it this way.

ND has before us all played out a stategy of continually selecting players when well down on form at the expense of youth who whilst may or may not have been much betteer on the day certainly deserved to be in the red and blue out of sheere effort and respect for the jumper, something much lacking by some of the so called leadership groups.

but please continue with your throwaway responses.

And i have no doubt he wil continue bringing back the bandaged and the bruised, patched up and out they go. yes i know that many a player goes carrying a niggly or some soreness. But thats more akin to cutting of your nose to spite your face. Its a denial denial of reality. We have more chance of wining the cake comp at the royal show than having any influence come september. But in true Monty Python fashion we'll carry on...only a flesh wound.. only half the team out.. tis all right captain the ships fines and we're still on course. who is kidding whom.

id have far greater respect for Neale as a coach ( as I reckon he's a pretty top bloke in other regards ).. if he came out and simply said "well she's pretty stuffed" but we'll seize this as an opportunity to find out more about this young bunch and see if we cant set our selves up for a decent second half with the regular suspects better repaired and rested and restored to some useful state of combat.

I have grave concern that despite all the rhetoric by the club that some of the guys will come back in underdone, exposed to more injury and so the viscious circle continues...in ever decreasing radii !!

If you accept that we probably wont win too many games from here on in.. and fair enough if some dont, butif you did adopt that position, does it really matter if we lose another 4-5 games this half if we can learn something truly useful from it. Sheeds did this years ago and as they say the rest is history.

I suppose only time will tell and we can all review with 20/20 hindsight.

I have asked this before and I am sorry for that but I do have a genuine question for those closer to the club and its internal workings than I am, does anyone actually see the club extending Danihers contract? This is not to ask what we as individuals want, but what you think the club will logically do. And why.

Does anyone here actually believe that after 10 years without the ultimate success, a truly appalling start to his last contracted year, a team that appears to be relatively unskilled and very unsure of themselves, and with what seems to be a very ineffective and reactive plan, that doesn't seem to suit the list that he built, that Daniher will be given any more time to get it right?

And can the current appalling injury list, which has not helped in any way shape and form, be the reason for that re-appointment, if it should occur?

For the record, I completely and totally agree with those that say that Neale should be afforded the respect that anyone deserves after serving for such a long tenure in a very difficult role, through what has been arguably some bloody awful times for a relatively difficult the club (including board upheaval, financial restriction etc), and for doing a genuinely fantastic job in being a spokesman for, and spruiking of, the club.

But can the club really afford to give him any more time? Since the success that we all want seems to be getting further and further away.

Now that there is a hell of a lot more stability at the other levels, is it possible that the club can afford to take a chance and make a change (which seems to be the popular choice) within the coaching department? While this was probably not a luxury the club was afforded in previous years.

So back to the initial question, with all these factors (and facts) in place does anyone think that Neale will have his contract extended again?

And if they do (which is perfectly fine, there is no judgement in this post) why?

If they are smart they will be considering their options now until the end of the season. IMO change should only come if you are confident the change will make things better.

If a better candidate exists to take the club in another direction, then he should be found and signed up. If not then ND should be extended for another year. The difficulty is that judgment is subjective and only those in the industry and with the necessary knowledge can make that decision.

Unfortunately even for the educated change is a gamble, sometimes it comes off, sometimes not. All you can do is hope the research and thought process you have used to derive the best option is sound. its essential in business and no different in the business of footy.

.....

Best post I've read in weeks. An excellent summary of Daniher's career at the MFC and the current status of his position.

For mine, I would prefer that his contract was not renewed. However, I suspect that unless anyone highly qualified comes in and sticks their hand up for the job, then the board will give him another 1 or 2 years based on the "no better options" argument. While this is fair enough to a degree, I'm worried that Daniher's message has become a little stale (cliche I know) with the TJ, Green, Bruce generation, and that an injection of some fresh enthusiasm and some new ideas might be exactly what we need.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
