umps are being kind to the Lions tonight

โ€˜Kindโ€™ is putting it nicely.

I can barely watch the rest of this match. Bitterly disappointed.ย

ย

Anyone know the dimensions of the Springfield ground?

ย

Found on there site saying it's an MCG size ground.

ย

Doesn't look it...maybe they can mark out the 50mtr arcs at 40 like the SCG used to do.

What day did they say the GF would be on?

it was at 1.40 I heard that much. 2.40 VIC time

Disappointing game, Adelaide were never in it, early umpiring decision or non decision hurt them. They also fumbled everything,ย  whereas Brisbane were clean and direct.

The Lions forwards were good, we (if we win tomorrow) will have to be careful of Wardlaw, Davidson and Hodder. Conway runs all day and has a good footy brain.

Hoping Springfield reminds us of Casey (if we get over North).

Thanks and I agree with all that.
I hope we ask for AFL standard umpires. Brisbane were better but Adelaide got completely shafted.ย

Yep first three of four goals from frees in front. The amount of non frees to Adelaide was terrible too.ย

Wardlaw was protected all night.

There is no such thing as holding the ball in the women's league. We need to just take the tackler on. You'd have to be lucky to be pinged.

The Lions havenโ€™t even trained on this ground. The turf has only just been laid and they wonโ€™t get a run on it until midway through next week. So thereโ€™s that.

The fact the game is being played in Ipswich beggars belief. A maximum crowd of 8000 bogans beggars belief but they will only get about a thousand.ย

Happy Homer Simpson GIF

AFL treating the womens game as second rate, allowing Richmond then Brisbane to dictate the stadium. Setting the women up to fail by not giving them the best opportunity to excel and entertain, and the effect may be to set back the league, and to slow down the majority to become full-time players (conspiracy, though probably unintended), popularity is important,

How does having to turn spectators away or not getting them to the turnstiles help?

Could ask the sponsor what they want?

The fans want a spectacle, for the Finals. How can the AFL continue to give home ground advantage to a few teams at the expense of entertainment, and call that good for womens footy.

The turf at Springfield was laid 1 month ago, it must be dangerous to play on (Gosch's required 12-16 weeks). There are going to be cracks between the slabs just made for the odd boot, and no way it has any roots that will hold the pieces from moving. My guess is the opposition will inspect and say we are not playing on that. They are setting themselves up for trouble.

If we play the GF, I can see Bannan hitting a soft spot as she bounces, or Hanks, Purcell, Paxman, Zanker losing their feet when turning tight, the ground giving way as the tall's hold their opposition from the drop zone, and half the team rolling the ankle to some extent.

We do have the mantra anywhere, anytime, anyone, does North?

ย 600 seats

At least 8000 can enter.

What's worse for either us or North is playing a GF up here in middle of the day where I would assume the temp will be at least around 30 degrees. Forecast latest to next Friday is sunny, 18-30 degrees so look out us or Kangas.

In addition if you lay turf in your own yard it takes more than a month ( up here in any case) for the roots to grab on. You even try to keep your kids off newly laid turf. I'm sure they will have all the machines etc. to get it up to speed but as an old footballer I would be a bit suss running, turning and twisting on newly laid turf. Completely agree with Kev M. Time will tell I suppose.

Regardless of who the opposition is, I would truly love for this to happen. It might make the AFL think twice before the next stupid decision they make. But then again, they have form when it comes to making stupid decisions on top of stupid decisions.ย

Oh man, thank goodness somebody said that. I thought I was going nuts. Gets pinged everytime she's within 3 metres of the pill. I've been scratching my head trying to work it out

Brisbane finished top and earned the right to a home GF if they make it. With the Gabba and Metricon unavailable, theyโ€™ve lobbied hard for the next best option in their home state.ย
If the same scenario was applied to MFC, where the G and Marvel were unavailable, I would expect our club to also lobby hard for the next best option and keep the GF in our state.ย
Springfield is a ****ty inadequate venue and it sucks for the spectacle of AFLW, but itโ€™s the Lionโ€™s prerogative.ย
Go Crows.ย

Brisbane did not such lobbying for Springfield, they themselves said they donโ€™t care where itโ€™s okayed, theyโ€™d be happy if it was at Marvel or Ikon

I may be overly cynical but that sounds like 'window dressing' in the same way Jackson said 'Freo or Eagles' but everyone knew he wanted and would get to Freo.

Lions will be hard to beat

Springfield? ย FFS1. I know Brisbane very well. ย Springfield is like going up to Craigieburn or Pakenham for the game. Itโ€™s 35-40 minutes away from Brisbane. ย And new grass? ย 4 weeks old!!!ย

I wonder how many tickets were actually available to the public!

The 600 grandstand seats would mostly have gone to Sponsors and VIP's.ย  Hopefully MFC got an allocation.

Greg Swan's dummy spit over the criticisms of choosing Springfield included comments about marquees being ready for the game.ย  If these are inside the ground they would take up space that should be available for the other 7,000+ tickets.ย  However, they will be filled by Corporate groups and other big spenders.ย  If marquees are outside the ground will they set up temporary seating like they do at the Grand Prix for such groups?ย

Regardless of the facilities for them a fair chunk of tickets would have been reserved for them.ย  A tell tale sign of that:ย  "Tickets for the grand final sold out hours after going on sale to the general public, with the Lions saying, should further tickets become available, they will be released via Ticketmaster on Thursday from 2pm (AEST)".ย

Of course, 'further tickets' can only come from Reserved tickets not taken up!! ย  AFLW GF tickets

So how many tickets were available yesterday for the rank and file fans?ย  Precious few I suggest.

As I mentioned in the other GF thread, Luci, thereโ€™s cheer squad members whoโ€™ve missed out on tickets. And thatโ€™s despite having AFLW as well as Demon Army membership. Their crime? Not logging on within a nanosecond of the tickets becoming available. Theyโ€™ve booked flights and accommodation, too. Our Club will likely sort something out for them as thereโ€™s only a few affected. Point being, this should never have been an issue in the first place.ย

I'm surprised the club didn't get a ticket allocation.ย

Surely the club could use them to link up with our Qld fan clubs to 'rent a crowd' and bus them to Sprinfield.

Its a GF!ย  For our team to fly up on Friday, not train on the oval, not have time to adjust to the hot weather and not have many Dee fans at the game seems like we are taking it all a bit too casually for my liking...๐Ÿ™„

The Club did get an allocation, and of that a number of tickets were allotted for the Demon Army. Clearly not enough though. Iโ€™m sure the Club will be successful in getting them there, itโ€™s just that it should never have come to this.

It does seem as though we are taking it all a bit too casually, but I think thatโ€™s from the point of view of us fans. On Saturday Kate Roffey, when the subject of potential injuries due to the turf not being ready and the possibility of ensuing lawsuits, was heard to say quite emphatically that sheโ€™s โ€œready for it.โ€ Sheโ€™s extremely p*ssed off about the venue choice, just as much as we are.ย

Do you think Lions refused us a chance to train on at Springfield or we chose not to?

And why wouldn't we fly up Thursday?.ย  It all looks very rushed for us given the oval is at least an hour or two from Brisbane

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front.ย  They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season.ย Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, theyโ€™re riding high in third place on the AFL table.ย The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this weekโ€™s encounter, it seems a forlorn hopeย that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourneย captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles atย Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckmanโ€™s masterclass in the second half.ย  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipperโ€™s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, aย career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested),ย nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.ย

Following a disastrous 0โ€“5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
