Some quotes: It’s believed the report, which covered the 2021 AFL season, read favourably for Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Geelong and Brisbane Lions.

That is really encouraging and bodes well for our continuing growth and being a destination club. Unfortunately it does not support the dominant doom and gloom Demonland narrative that our culture took a hit this year due to - select your choice of negative reason du jour: dinking own bathwater, terrible coaching, not giving players in the 2's reward for effort, etc. So, can I ask you to edit your opening post to be more appropriate for this site by finding a negative cultural angle to apply. Feel free to misquote the article, most people don't have access anyway đŸ˜‰

Don't disagree... though it does say it's only focusing on 2021.  Not 2022.

That's the spirit!


In the past, successful teams have been described as having a "good culture" that embraces the whole club and leads to the success.

Without passing judgement in any way, the recent revelations about the dorks while winning three in a row would seem to discredit this correlation. Very sad.

Our culture after winning the flag in 2021 that involved the whole club while also embracing as many supporters as possible with cup hugging opportunities bodes well for our future success.

Insightful query Redsox.

On 2021 performance, the culture improvements came first over the 2020 off season, caring/sharing concepts embraced etc. Then we win a flag. Just an example, there's many facets to good culture. But having the talent is mandatory also. As we have.

Then in 2022 we win the first 10 - no drinking bathwater here IMO. (as Jake Niall incorrectly assessed at the start of the season)

I held the cup on one of its many regional whistle stops and joined 35,000 others at the G last December. Geelongs cup is now sitting at Kardinia Park. Come on down if you want to see it I guess for their fans elsewhere.

Very comfortable where we are. keeping/saving Adem Yze from a fate worse than death by joining the Bombers is just a bonus now for continuity into 2023.

Sure we have issues but none are insurmountable with the foundations firmly in place.

The casual culture might be something you can get from Culture Kings. 

Our values determine what kind of culture we have. Judging by our on field performance i think we are living up to them

A recently released AFLPA report deals with this issue. The Dees did well in 2021.

My best guess is that culture and winning go together and have overlapping development. Start winning, culture goes up, leads to more winning etc etc.

Winning is the key.

I'm particularly interested in the element of culture that says Geelong, Richmond and other contenders have a massive chunk of their salary cap available to pursue high profile free agents every second year, whilst our better players are signed on huge dollars which restricts our ability to improve our list.

Petracca and Oliver you have to pay right. Any other side would’ve did the same if they were theirs and paid far more on a free market. Outside of those two, I’d be hesitant to bust the pursue strings too much.

Culture is “How” you achieve.  Dees certainly high on this scale. Making the right decisions on the right issues.  
But agree that winning helps, as losing breeds disappointment, frustration and often poor decisions.

    On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
