Gaff got 8

And I reckon Touhey instigated this a bit

It's two weeks. 6 or 8? Give me a spell.

Yes but half the time it’s not clear whether the ump is saying get outside 5 or you are outside 5   Please explain

If a player doesn't stand the mark immediately (the time to do so appears to be uniquely umpire dependent lol) and is a step or two away then he will be instructed to move back at least 5 meters from the mark (as to how any player knows exactly where that is i have no idea) with the umpire telling him "outside 5".

Sometimes of course this is the player's doing in that he is deliberately stepping away from the mark anyway (because he wants to)  and the ump is still telling him outside 5.   In other words that player can now no longer go forward and stand the mark, he must stay "Outside 5".

The Doggies mostly (but not always) prefer to play outside 5.  And at times they sometimes choose to stand the mark or they get caught on the mark and can't go outside 5 after the ump calls 'Stand'.

The short answer is it can be both but each call for outside 5 relates to one of the above scenarios.

Geelong mostly prefer to get up in the opponents face and 'Stand' the mark.

Hope that helps Sue

Be good if the Cats dropped this one...

LOL when you said this. But your wish may well come true!

I think the push in the back of a player shoving them into a pack is one of the most potentially dangerous actions in our game.

Seems to go unnoticed by the tribunal.

Hope Geelong choke

Reckon there was a bit of that with May last week

Why the [censored] does BT have to comment on what’s clearly going to the tribunal? Insinuating that Toohey was acting. He’s such a blow hard. The game is better off without these boring dinosaurs who editorialise the game instead of simply commentating.

I shouldn't say this . . . but I wish that gas cylinder . . . .

Sick of watching the man on mark drop back 5m

Stupid stand rule...

Really sick of hearing both.  Heaps of the outside 5 watching the Doggies as they mostly play it that way.

Easiest solution ....Channel 7 dont mic the umps!

But yeh need to lose this rule

BT just does not have an inside voice.

It's been surgically removed

How long have you worked in the teaching profession Brownie?

It's pretty much a Doggy thing.  They prefer to step back from the mark and not 'Stand' the mark but instead go back and protect an area.  If they dont stand the mark then that area has to be outside 5 meters from the mark.

A great idea for defenders in an OOTF situation as they can protect against the inside kick, a play on inside for a long raking kick over the back and/ or the switch a little better instead of standing the mark on the line and watching as the player runs off into field to do one of the above.

Thanks mate. They yell outside 5 even when there is no one with 25m of the mark

if it’s a rule, why do they have to coach the players?

or just turn off the mics

Cameron is playing like its his jubilee

Been the difference tonight.  Such an accurate kick and works super hard to get separation on opponent.

Cats very impressive after losing Kolo before the game and Stewart early on. De Konig has given Naughton a bath

Bailey Smith. Fake tough guy and then goes missing in the last Q

Yeah, I just watched a replay and I think you're right. Just a forearm into the back and pushed May off balance and into a high speed collision.

Cats seem to be experts at it

100% unsighted this qtr :)

Naughton has been pathetic

dropped uncontested marks and all

They have to yell it each time as if the player does the opposite after being told he is going to be free kicked.

The coaching i can't stand is when the umps tell a player running near or.alomgside the mark, even when right behind an opponent, to 'Move out/Away'.

As you say they are well aware of the rules.  Stop coaching them FCS.

  • PREVIEW: North Melbourne

Can you believe it? After a long period of years over which Melbourne has dominated in matches against North Melbourne, the Demons are looking down the barrel at two defeats at the hands of the Kangaroos in the same season. And if that eventuates, it will come hot on the heels of an identical result against the Gold Coast Suns. How have the might fallen? There is a slight difference in that North Melbourne are not yet in the same place as Gold Coast. Like Melbourne, they are currently situated in the lower half of the ladder and though they did achieve a significant upset when the teams met earlier in the season, their subsequent form has been equally unimpressive and inconsistent.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.
