Kane Cornes has named his seven best effort players in the competition right now.

This is the list and a great acknowledgement for Gawn who through sheer effort has made himself a champion.

    "Christ, I've got hours of airtime to fill in and no ideas. Get thinking ... think think ... nuh. Where's the dictionary? Abbreviate ... nuh ... clergyman ... what the hell's that? ... earphone ... nuh ... effigy ... effort! Top ten effort players! Jeez ... ten? Are there ten? I'll go seven. Top seven effort players. Just pull a few out here and there ... who's gunna contradict me? I'll just phone this in to the work experience intern ... and ... done. Add some talkback and that's Monday taken care of."

    We have a whole team of effort players.

    Jordon ran from one end of the ground to the other last week just to get a finger on the ball.

    Nobody plays in our team that isn't an effort player.

    Clarry was filthy with the dissent-50 called against him last week. The look in his eye (reminiscent of both he and Trac in the third quarter of the GF) and determination to win the ball immediately thereafter. Suggests he has another gear and isn't always going 100%. Not a knock at all. My favourite player in the history of football. He doesn't need to be full-steam. But I wouldn't put him in my top-7 effort players. Pickett is up there though, for those thinking he needs a rest. .

      The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

      The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

    • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

      The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
