Angus Brayshaw Re-Signs Until 2028

Good on Gus sounds like he is backing himself in, his current value at dees would have him outside the first dozen players, but his current contract would be well inside that. Unless he wants to take a fair haircut to stay he’s going to need to level up this year.

ADONSKI talk about turning the clock back !! We missed out but in retrospect we were the winners on all fronts Smith was more than useful for Cats but I believe our supporters in D/L have underrated Angus team contribution all year. I bet if you went back and examined the games of his opponents very few would have been in the best half dozen.
Things  like spoiling a mark and  knocking the ball out of bounds in that process were fine many times as well as his tackling stopping firsts forward.

He in effect was another defender and attacked when he was in space. Yes he occasionally missed the mark with his kick but in Clubland  he was snd deserved his recognition snd team role.

If Angus does leave through FA with say 2 flags our succession plans of say Howes Rosman Jordon  Laurie or even Bowser or AMW maybe Oscar Baker if he excels given an opportunity. The cupboard is not exactly bare in prospects for our Members wing st the G.

BTW LUCIFER to suggest that Gus Granny performance  was a Cameo again vastly undervalued his game long commitment and excellence. Many in the Club Will say that is his best game ever for us ( most valuable and impactful snd rounded ) and I totally agree having a seat on the non members wing between half forward and wing on his side of the ground in the GF.

He was not far behind Trac Fritta Clarry/Salo as best in the top 5 players for us. Indeed your "cameo" referring to his third quarter was as good a quarter as played as he was in the thick of it before our run on and bang bang bang.

A very valued Clubman like his family a thoroughly decent and humble human being who would be much missed by the Demons faithful.

So good to see him get his rewards after his concussion struggles earlier in his career.

It's a roll of the dice with the concussion issues he's had. One more head knock and potentially there's no chance of another contract.

Thanks FITB  That's sad but he is playing and competing every match as if it is his last as he did so magnificently on our Premiership day!!

If it is true he is on 625k contract....i presumed 600-650k.  His current offer would be well below that!

i cannot see MFC wanting to pay him more than Langdon, who is far more important to our future success in my eyes..

So somewhere between 400-450k is what i would be offering....200k drop....He will be looking elsewhere at 550-600K a season i reckon.

Rivers may be a much better player than him in the same position.

If it comes down to keeping Oliver and paying him close to a million a year, something has to give!

Then there is Jackson, who is also super important to our future success.

Gut feel is we will lose Brayshaw.

Genuine question:

Did Brayshaw get played as a defensive winger because we needed one, or because we needed somewhere to put Gus that wasn't in the middle and we'd tried every other option on the wing?

No doubt he played the defensive wing role really well for the most part in '21, but if we had a 2nd genuine gun winger would he have even been put there?

I wonder the same

Harmes is a better athlete so always wondered why he didn’t get put on the wing instead at least he has a burst of pace

I’m hopeful Gus hasn’t been Dom Tyson’d

Brayshaw made the position his own. It isn’t an afterthought

He is one of the main reasons we won the Flag.
On one wing we had pure speed, the other was take on Brute Force.
Take your Pick….?

My guess would be Harmes' disposal and awareness would be detrimental on the wing. Definitely has Gus covered for pace, but I think Gus reads the play better and that's why he made the defensive wing role work despite not being a fantastic runner.

Just intriguing if 'defensive winger' was even a role we had picked out given we chased Smith.

Good player but not irreplaceable and I won’t lose any sleep over him if he leaves. If he goes for greener pastures then no hard feelings. He will always be one of our breakout premiership players. If he stays then it’s great. It’s the price to pay for being a premiership side with an excess of talent and the inevitable salary cap squeeze. Some have to move on.

We've been drafting on credit for a few years now, and our talent pipeline seems reasonably promising. That said, you didn't remotely answer my question. I would try to keep Gus if I could, but what's he worth if he wants to walk? And would you really want the club to spend all its cookies on a short window of heightened success and then hit the ground hard like Hawthorn, or rather carefully manage our list for a longer spell at the top? Genuine question.

I was looking at the list contacts thread and I think we’re doing both. After this year with the likely departures of Melksham and Hibberd we should be pretty well sorted.

Yet we chased Smith.

Smith chose elsewhere and a very important role was nurtured.
A stroke of good luck? Possibly, but also beautifully executed

Gus made it a very important position.

I'd much prefer Gus as a mid than Harmes. I hope he gets mid time this year to (again) show what he is capable of. My comment is prompted after watching some highlights of the Adelaide game this year where Gus went into the mid mix and brilliantly combined with Gawn.

Now that his concussion issues are (hopefully) behind him, and he has had his best season since 2018, get Gus into the guts Goody!!!!

Exactly, and that's my point about the role itself.

Before everyone ties themselves in knots or trades Gus out while making ridiculous assertions about his value to the side....

The AFL CBA has clause 4C which states:

"c) In the event that the parties are unable to reach agreement on the terms of a new collective bargaining agreement by 30 June 2022 or such later date as agreed between the Parties, either Party may by the giving of 30 days’ notice in writing to the other Party terminate this Agreement provided that such notice shall not take effect before 1 November 2022"

To put it simply, the aim of both parties is to have a new agreement in place by mid- year.  This is important because this one runs out on 31 October and clubs and players need to know definitively how much they have to spend and earn for the coming years.

Gus's manager would be absolutely remiss to tie his player into an arrangement today, since he is highly talented and sought after.

By mid-year everyone will have a better idea of how much is on the table ( and it may be less than the current CBA, with the COVID disruptions).

For those saying Langdon is the better player and/or wingman, here are some 2021 stats:

langdon averaged +3 in disposals and had Gus cover in rebound 50s and goals

inside 50s and score involvements were even

Gus had Langdon covered for tackles, clearances, and goal assists

they are only a month apart in age so are an interesting comparison. Obviously very different players but I would grade their input as fairly even in 2021 with Gus edging him based on the GF performance.

"Had Langdon covered"?

0.5 more tackles
0.4 more clearances (with obviously more midfield time)
0.2 more goal assists

Not exactly leaving him in the dust there.

Langdon was ahead for inside 50s and score involvements by 0.1, so obviously 0.2 is when you 'have someone covered' hey?

Metres gained +144 to Langdon
Disposal efficiency +5.5% to Langdon
Marks +1.2 to Langdon

Gus was important last year, and shows amazing character to play the role he did so well, but I reckon you're underselling Langdon here a little and how different their roles are. Want Gus to stay, but have little doubt which one will command a higher price at contract time.

Which bit is wrong exactly?

The stats? That they have different roles? That Gus was  important? That Langdon will likely be offered a higher contract?

Interested in how any of those things makes me 'biased'.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
