I watched the game with the audio being about 5 seconds behind vision, so the votes may be slightly askew:

Hanks

Birch

Harris

D Pearce

Colvin

Though I was there, I'm afraid I can't vote faithfully. Missed 1st quarter (see game day thread) and stood where full game appreciation is difficult - at true ground level, almost below most of the field's level, and mainly at north-end (scoring end and building shade) 'Grandstand' inaccessible, eastern wing 'stand' looking into the sun and heat.

I'll watch the replay and will post then if that's acceptable and timely.

And now done.

Paxman's game better than I thought, just wilted towards the end?

Lots of HMs - Heath, Goldrick, Zanker, Colvin, Hore, general-on-the-field D.Pearce, etc, and I reckon some of Fitzsimon's efforts might be credited to Hanks?😉, but I'll go with

An apology to Harris and I thought Lampard tried hard all day

This was a hard one, I didn't feel anyone was outstanding so about 10 players could have snuck in for a vote.

5 - Hanks
4 - Harris
3 - Paxman
2 - Lampard
1 - Pearce

I'm with you there. I find giving votes difficult at the best of times, but this was tricky.

We'll done, you two: AFLCA votes had Sarah Lampard high up. As a spectator, it's not always easy to appreciate a back's game.

Doing the numbers, one coach had Lampy BOG and no votes from the other coach.  Dal Santo would have felt L Pearce was influential and on top all day so gave her the BOG 5 votes.  Don’t Dees rucks always dominate!  So Mick liked Sarah’s game. There were a few clangers in the windy conditions but she worked really hard and our backline needs her.

I've been looking at the coaches votes each week and have found them puzzling. I couldn't have Harris as BOG, but she did play well. At least two of her shots at goal were from frees. I thought Hanks was BOG by a clear margin then Pearce etc. McNamara was terrific last week in spite of her early clangers (much like Lampard's this week) but didn't feature too highly in the votes.

In the AFLCA votes, I'm usually agreeing and rarely surprised, but not so with the AFLW.

Really want to shout out for Libby Birch.  Had another very good game and now a leader and key defender at the club. Love her style !!

Another one to thank Daisy for. If memory serves, she had a part in getting Libby into footy from netball and then across to the Demons from the Bulldogs.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
