I'd love him at Melbourne, and regardless of what is written about, insinuated, rumoured or prophesised the final decision about where he plays next year will be pretty much his alone.

I think he is the most influential player in the AFL and I think if he nominated any one of the other fifteen clubs, each would do whatever it took to get him to the club.

i am beleiving we are tanking this year so we get the number 1 draft pick and along with maybe the next best draft pick we might just get him, or if that was the case he could nominate for the pre season draft and we could get him for free :)

ahhhhhh wishful thinking :P

It would be worth a year of pain to land Chris Judd for free

My issue is that do we have the room in the cap for him and can we afford him. i have no idea what players at melb are being paid...all that i know is that many of them would be paid too much. My guess is that bruce, green, johnstone, mcdonnald and robbo would be the highest paid players. of that list (remembering i dont know the players figures) only 3 players would be worth it. I feel we would have to trade a player for Judd to get some salary cap room. secondly, do we have the money to buy him? perhaps, or perhaps not.

these are very early days but wherever judd goes, hes going to want to go to a club that looks to have sucsess in the future and i feel we are a team on the slide. Who knows

Two issues here...

Firstly on the salary cap - its been mentioned that about a million dollars is just about the most you could afford to pay a bloke before it has a detrimental affect on the quality of your playing list. ie you can't pay your other player's enough to hold them. I think as a general rule that's probably about righ. You would have to look at a range of options in terms of trading or delisting to make enough room to accomodate Judd, but I don't see that as being a massive impediment - other than what we know. which is There is going to be some pain associated with getting any really good player to any club.

Secondly getting him to Melbourne. Every impression that I get of Judd is that he is an honest and forthright sort of bloke. I can't see him walking out on the Eagles for the PSD unless they stuff it up somehow. The success issue is far more complicated, but I'm certainly not one who sees our list as being poor. Quite the opposite - I think we have a very good list with some terrific youngsters who would shine under the leadership Judd would bring to the club. Whether he assesses it like that who know's - whtether that is a factor at all in fact. When RDB went to Carlton it wasn't because they were successful, quite the opposite, it was a challenge and he made sure he made his mark on the club - that's what champions do.

All that said - I think the only thing that gives us an advantage, is if indeed he actually harbours a desire to play for a club he had very strong allegiances to as a kid. Certainly the opportunity to walk straight into a captaincy role is probably there, but the determining factor would be his love of the red and blue if he still has one.

Posted

I get the impression he wants to come back to Victoria & play for a Melbourne based club. That would rule out all interstate clubs that would want him - including the Kangaroos who look like moving north to the Gold Coast permanently in the near future.

What's the total salary cap? Is it something like 7 or 8 million?

A $1Mil price tag means he'd effectively be soaking up 1/7th or 1/8th of MFCs money per year. Apart from the obvious question, can we afford him, the knock-on effect would mean the players around him would probably get less money than many of their opposition counterparts for doing much the same job. Would it have a detrimental effect on morale?

It's obviously worth a ertain amount of risk, but there are many ways in which trading for Judd could backfire BADLY on whoever picks him up (should he leave).

id give up Mclean and the no1 draft pick for Judd...would be silly not to and WestCoast would accept no less.

as good as Judd is....one man for a lot of money ...is not the solution for a team ( unless its the coaching job!! )

Would nt we have the option of having 1 or 2 less players on the list. I remember another club cutting their numbers fine. I would think that Judd would be worth at least 10,000 more members and 50% more sponsorship for the club?

Wouldnt trade Mclean! If we somehow got Judd i think Mclean would grow some mush more as a player and become a real big super star! Judd would take Mclean under his wing would be a great time for our midfield!

I would trade Miller and Green and maybe a no3 draft pik!!

The WCE will swoop on that.

Sure you are not giving too much away now?

I'd prefer a first rounder who has his entire career in front of him and McLean who has 250-300 odd games left to Judd who has 200-250 left. Assuming the round 1 pick is going to be good, you're trading McLean, who is a gun + a conceivably good player (maybe a star?) for a guy who's already played over 100 games. 2 potentially great players for 1 of the greatest ever? Not for me thanks.

Though you are right Wet Toast fans would probably only grudgingly accept that. Personally McLeanis the only guy I wouldn't entertain the thought of trading... and as it happens, McLean is the only one they'd be interested in having...

Probably, but that is a secondary issue to me. Yes he could up the memberships and sponsorships temporarily, but with that MUST come success. What if his shoulders started to go bad again? He would also be playing in a team without Kerr, Cousins, Waters, Chick, Stenglein and Braun. He'd be copping it from all angles. SO many things could go wrong, and if the club were to put all its eggs into one basket (money, salary cap, captaincy, sponsorship etc etc) if something terrible were to happen, or even if Judd were simply to find himself incapable of playing as good footy under a coach other than Woosha, then we could find ourselves worse off than before. It's a huge risk... Now that doesn't mean I'm not all for it (I hope the club does all it can to get him. Staying with the list we have is pure stagnation)... it just has to be at the right price. A few hundred thousand here or there, or a pick or two could make ALL the difference.

Where is your brain?

This site is full of people who do not have a clue.

Last year through trade week everyone was chucking up nonsense trades that are just absolutely ridiculous! Get a brain!

I'd rather we paid that sort of money ($1M) +, to get Leigh Matthews to coach us & mould us into a hard unit so that we could then vy for a flag.

Whoa! Take it easy mate! What about that don't you like? are you saying Miller and Green are too good to trade or the other way round?

Now that's not a half bad idea.

couldnt agree more...its like give a man a fish..feed him for day...teach him to fish and he's fed for life... :-))

Whether its Mathews or someone else.. i like the general thinking.. Invest in a coach that will instill a winning way..and we get much better value...and a legacy

Whoops meant 2 put a maybe in there! Let me rephrase:

Miller and maybe Green with a no3 Draft Pick. See West Coast reaction and base futher trade on that.

Yeah sort of.

I just reckon If you get Judd there, he's 50% better than any player on MFC's list that he'd replace.

Get a decent coach and you could expect 10% improvement from many of the players. Maybe more than 10% if the coach is good and takes a liking to one he sees himself in. For example, how much better as players, have Judd, Kerr and Cousins been under Woosha?

That's good maths I reckon. Make the good players great, and make the average players good and we'll be closer to a flag than a single superstar will bring us.

Not really because Matthews is not available and they seem like figures that can neither be proved or disproved - which sort of runs contrary to the laws of mathematics! Secondly your point about McLean being the only player the Eagles want is not right in my opinion. McLean is fantastic, but he is injury prone and is slow by foot. Davey and Frawley would be two they would look at closely. Otherwise I think it is draft picks.

I rate our list a lot higher than some, and think that Judd would be for Melbourne what Carey was for North. Big question is who will be our Pagan?

Posted

The only way we can get Judd is if we offer Travis Johnstone and a early second round pick the Eagles will want a first round. I dont know when players contracts expire but to make room for 1mil player, delist Yze promote Jeff White to Veteren Status and Trade Trav, each player would be on around $500,000 IMO. Besides maybe Robbo, TJ and Brock are the only currency we have for a deal like this. Lets face it who would you rather have Trav or Judd.

Is ANY player worth 1 mill???

Judd is the best hingsince barassi IMO. But if he is soaking up and 8th of the cap, IF HE WERE to get injured, we would not have enough money to spend on QUALITY depth players that can compete at an afl level.

If the dees are sitting at 0-6, it would mean that we would have to win 12 of the final 18 games to make finals. I think the dees might sit bottom and try and woo Judd to come across.

He is worth 650-800k. But 1 mill? I think that is too much to invest in one player.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
