Best Way to Watch

Resigned officially yesterday and am returning to Aus in August 2022. Yeah I know there was another thread about this, but I couldn't search it up, so I'm asking it again: What is the best/cheapest/simplest way to get the footy on TV in Aus?

I'm used to the Fox Footy coverage and want to continue with that. Don't want Foxtel or any other cable service with endless "documentaries" about killer sharks or reality shows about man-kini surfer truckers. I vaguely recollect Binman recommending Kayo.....

Hey, Grr-owl…. That’s when we’re expecting to return. We might have to navigate a lot of stuff around that time. Phone plans, electricity suppliers, furnishings, etc. But the daunting thing is the move and the crazy costs associated with it. Bonne chance, ami.

Yeah, I've been looking into plans......it's so complicated. Seems that Superloop is best for home net, Boost 12mth for mobiles...

Then there's gas and electricity.... Oh, boy. My bro says Dodo do a net+gas+electricity deal that's good.

I'm with Superloop and they're good. Not as good as when I first signed up, but overall I have no issues. The best IMO are Aussie Broadband, but you do generally pay that slight premium for it. I wouldn't go with Dodo if you were paying me to.

If you wanted a bundle Origin's NBN is a whitelabled Aussie Broadband service, but it's probably cheaper to keep it all separate.

As for mobile if you don't mind prepaid Boost are great. The 6 and 12 month prepaid plans are brilliant value. 100% the exact same service you would get as going direct with Telstra. All of the other MVNOs providing services over the Telstra network only get access to the wholesale portion.

You can see the difference for example between Boost (Full Telstra) and ALDI (Telstra Wholesale). Massive difference in WA. Still a fair difference over East too.

internet in Thailand is 3 x faster and no more than $25 bucks a month. Aussie internet, mobiles etc is obscenely expensive. I dont know why.

Its interesting for sure.

Oz is expensive but I always put that down to the sheer size of our  land. That although cities are the same everywhere,  our prices were pushed up by the cost of infrastructure in regional areas.

A mate of mine pointed out that in Russia the largest country in the world, internet prices for 100 mps were about ten $ Oz.

A quick Google search will reveal that at those speeds we do pay more than most countries in the developed world. ( And sometimes more than developing economies).

Anyone have any real answers why?

Do other countries not have optic fibre?

Are we perhaps paying off the main outlay...will prices come down?

In our humble home, we pay about 80 bucks a month for Optus which gives us unlimited ammounts. We sometimes have issues at night where speed is slowed a lot. I think this may be most people in our neighborhood  using the same service at the same time.  But for close to 100$ we should get better.

Also Optus is cheaper than Telstra, so I'm assuming a lot of people pay over a thousand a year for their internet. 

That's a lot in anyone's economy.

We also have four phones but are fairly stingy with them using Aldi. I thoroughly reccomend them ( but they are not yet compatible for some smart watches)

We pay about  all up eighty dollars a month as well which gives us unlimited calls and texts plus about 20 in internet downloads each. ( four phones all up)

So close to two grand a year for net and phones( not including kayo, Netflix and spotify)But I think or like to believe we are quite frugal...kayo only for a few months and I certainly used it this year 😁I know some whose phones can be a grand each on plans and over 2 grand per annum for broadband. With some streaming entertainment thrown in my mate pays close to five grand all up for his family phones and nbn. He does have some great phones though.

I do believe costs have come down and many pundits believe they will continue to do so.

But like most things in oz ( especially cars) we do pay too much. And unlike cars I can't really find a discernible reason for internet....So I'm keen to hear any.

Yeah but I find the menu annoying and of course I don't like to be too political but giving more money to Sir Rupert hurts a lot. But his  divorces are not cheap so I appreciate Kayo isn't too expensive.

Kayo… $25 per month, turn it off after footy season, turn it on for next. Cheaper than a membership!!!

Try the Middle East. My calculations on the Superloop+Boost combo I mentioned is 47% of the price it is here, and that's with twice the speed and data....

2 factors that play together. Population density and distance. Russia is a huge country but also has a massive population (144 million) versus Australia (25 million) land area is roughly 17m vs 7m square meters. A little under 2 1/2 times the land area and nearly 6 times the population. Also there is virtually no one in the central and east part of the country.

 You can tell from this post how bored I am. This footy season can’t come soon enough. Sorry 🤷‍♂️

I found it’s all relative Grr-owl. Expat salaries, from my experience in the ME, more than compensated for the high cost of communication services. Although the internet quality was rather poor from memory. 
I spent time in Bahrain, Qatar and UAE (Dubai) - about 7 years in total - but found the air conditioning supply costs in Qatar ( district cooling supply - where cold air is supplied to your building in a similar manor to water or power) to be the biggest rip off - far more so than internet charges. But you cannot live without aircon in the ME, so what can you do?
While there certainly isn’t any real choice in service provider, and costs are high, expats generally get paid far more than they would back home - why else would you be there? So I really couldn’t complain.

One thing I do not like about Kayo in the couple of times I've used it is the no spoiler feature is a bit misleading. I've had 2 NFL games 'spoiled' now because I didn't have it set properly. Better not happen again.
