Clayton Oliver Interview

Featured Replies

This Clayton Oliver podcast popped into my feed. He is in relaxed form and gives some insights into his early career and from the Grand Final. Credit to Dylan Buckley (I've never listened to his podcast before) he is a good interviewer.

Yes and still felt really strong and been getting through all his weight sessions. I'm not going to drink the bath water but gee, wow , oh boy, I like the sound/feel of everything at the moment!

Thanks @BDA - top interview.

Interesting Billy Stretch's professionalism being such an influence on Clarry and more reciently Goody, with his 3 big rocks.

Don't here Clarry speak at length so often.  So many other great insights, but one of the others that really stuck out to me was the connection between Clarry and Gawn on the field, with Clarry pretty much instinctively knows where Max is going to put it off his ruckwork.  Sort of reminds me of the way good onballlers I played with just knew where it was going, in a way I never seemed to be able to.  The really interesting one was regarding Gawny bringing all the midfielders in to turn things around in that third quarter.  Gawny seems like such a great leader that his players really respect.

I need to start this post with a disclaimer. All players should be free to go out and do as they please within the legal framework of legal rules.

I bumped into Dusty Martin at a restaurant last night and asked him how it feels to take a back seat to Oliver and Petracca as the best players in the league. I shouldn't have said it and I regret it. I want to be humble Melbourne supporter.

Dusty wanted to punch my lights out but was too smart for that. I was amazed at how much weight he has lost. He would be more similar to Bailey Fritch than Petracca on the scales at the moment.

If I had my time again I wouldn't have said anything. Thanks Dusty for being as diplomatic as one could be in a split second decision.

Go Dees and I hope supporters show more diplomacy than me.

Dusty's neck tattoo's shrunk in proportion with his body weight loss.

What were you doing in Melbourne?

Write to the RFC and say this. Dusty probably deserves to hear that his self control in the moment was a winner.

I'm sure hes going to win a Brownlow in the next few years.

Three years ago I think his disposal of the ball was sloppy at times with those Hollywood handball over the head.

He is so much more effective and clever with his ball use and so much more confident.

There was a scene in the granny that Daisy pointed out where he was tackled by two dogs players simultaneously and still managed to take a decent kick.

He and Trac are worth the price of admission alone.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
