I watched my first game of this year's carnival over the weekend (Country vs WA) given there's a chance we'll wind up with a decent pick for LJ.

No shortage of talent in that Country side. I'd be happy with all of Cadman, Clark and Szybkowski based on that viewing alone. Also, that Harley Reid looked like a Tom Stewart clone - a real talent.

Harley Reid stands out so much already as a bottom ager, real talent for next year and should go high I would imagine.

He's an exceptional talent

Reminds me of Lever when he dominated as bottom age.

Would be top 5 in this draft.  There are some very good bottom agers floating around.

Nick Watson from Eastern Rangers is probably one of the most talented non-indigenous small forwards for a long time.  He is very small though.  He had a great battle with South Australian bottom-ager Alex Holt who looked excellent.  Their matchup reminded me of when James Frawley (Vic Country) played on Shane Edwards (SA) many championships ago.   Holt would go high in this draft I think too.   SA also has Ashton Moir who is a chance to go number 1 next year as a Ugle-Hagan type.

And WA had some impressive bottom-agers.   Mitchell Edwards, their ruckman, could be a very high pick and Clay Hall did some good things.  He's going to be a good player, among some of their other promising bottom-agers.

It’s a BS antiquated rule.

I love the father/son rule and hope it's never abolished.  It's one of the few romantic aspects of what has become more of a hard-nosed business and less of a game in recent times.

No team gains an unfair advantage with it as it's down to luck which sons of former players are up to AFL level.  Geelong were fortunate as are Collingwood right now but it's available for all clubs to utilise.

I'll be even further enamoured with the rule if Kynan Brown, Noah Yze, Kalani White et al turn out to be great players.

Remarkable how polished he looked for a bottom age player.

Good insights from the weekend and prior posts from other Demonlanders.

From the SA v Vic metro game

Will Ashcroft - will play senior footy in 2023.  Sam Walsh like in his style and class. Lions will be very lucky but need to match draft pick #1 or 2 imv.

Charlie Clarke - his pace and smarts and goal sense are appearing. Classic half forward.
Harry Sheezel - smooth running mud with class and skill. Will be top 5-6 pick. Very very good pick imv

Cam Mckenzie - as a mid, just gets the footy and goes.  Constantly moving and burst of pace. Top 20 pick.
Alwyn Davey jnr - Bombers will pickup a classy small forward. His ability to crumb and evade is already on show.
Oli Hotton - is a player and showed good skill and goal smarts. Agree likely a top 15-20 selection

Lewis Hayes - very good intercept defender.  Reads the play.  For clubs with no Jake Lever, he will be appealing.

SA

Billy Dowling - looks a footballer. Competes and gets the footy. Good kick and has skills.
Adam D’Aloia - another mid with strong ball winning ability.  What impressed me was his coverage of the ground and getting to the contest.
Harry Barnett - good agile young ruck. One for clubs to watch and if Jackson goes (😭😭😭) , I’d consider him as young option for the Dees 👍🏻
Mattaes Phillipou - obviously the kid is super talented and can play ruck rover or as a goalkicking forward.
Kobe Ryan - didn’t showout as I hoped but looks like a Rory Sloane type of midfielder. Showed signs but want to watch him in last game v WA this week.
Harvey Pedlar - reminds a little of Tom Sparrow type.   Not a high possession winner but good build , good kick.  Might be a late draft option if Dees are down the order.

Underagers Holt and Moir definitely impressed.  Moir (as has been commented) does resemble JUH from the Bulldogs in style and ability.

Kynan Brown might be ours this year. If he's like his dad, he will be a great pick up.

Aaron Cadman is like Jeremy Cameron 2.0. Definitely we’d play him.

Agree 'Spirit'.. I've watched a few Vic Country vision and he's the one that's really stood out in terms of the perfect fit for our list.

Has vice like grip with his hands and his work rate is exceptional. Not only that, he kicks goals.

Of we're able to grab a top 10 pick then I think he'll come under heavy consideration.

Matthew Jefferson is another interesting prospect, but he's a bit more skinnier at only 76kg which to me tells me that it's going to a few years until you see the best of him at AFL level.

Cadman is already physical ready to go next year imo.

Yep, Cadman would be perfect for us in my view.

Cadman looks great. We need a young and talented key forward and in that Cameron mould would be perfect. Point of difference.

Him and another mid inside the top 15 would be ideal.

If we could do that through the Jackson trade, you'd be happy.

Unfortunately, not quite father/son material but Zac Clarke is a player to keep an eye on. His father Daniel was a beanpole ruckman drafted by Melbourne in the early 90s but he never got to play a game. F2705D18-FE70-43B9-B3E4-42F6E74B1994.thumb.jpeg.c7f9704e6aba8703abe29f10e06bdb8d.jpeg

He actually resembles Mitch Clark, which is weird.

It’s all academic for the Dees depending on the Luke Jackson decision.  If he stays, I’d imagine we would be relatively quiet and look for bargains or a surprising drifter. But with JT, he’s always got a sparkle in the eye.  If we get 2 x 1st rounders from a Jackson trade, then it’s game on for JT. From watching a few of the carnival games here is a rough top 40 … (of course Vic Metro and Vic country still to come ).

1-10. Will Ashcroft. George Wardlaw. Elijah Tsatas. Harry Sheezel. Aaron Cadman. Elijah Hewitt. Jedd Busslinger. Jhye Clark. Mattaes Phillipou. Oliver Hollands.
11-20 Cam Mckenzie. Brayden George. Oli Hotton. Harry Barnett. Mitch Szybkowski. Lewis Hayes. Charlie Clarke. Matthew Jefferson. Isaac Keeler. Alwyn Davey jnr

21-40. Harry Lemmey. Josh Weddle.  Billy Dowling. Adam D’Aloia. Jaxon Binns. Noah Long. Reuben Ginbey. Callum Verrell. James Van Es. Henry Hustwaite. Koby Ryan. Jacob Konstanty. Henry Hustwaite. Coby Burgiel. Darcy Edmonds, Josh Weddle. Tom Scully.  Lachlan Cowan. Jakob Ryan. Max Michaelanny.

I think as an optimistic, I’d like to see the Dees grab Finn Emile-Brennan as a NGA player.  Hope he sits under the radar in the last 5-6 weeks of the year.

Two players that could be interesting to see where they land are Taj Campbell-Farrell at the stingrays (currently injured unfortunately, but who plays like Clayton Oliver ) and Harvey Pedler from SA, a Rostrevor College lad who is strong at the footy, loves a goal and reminds me of Tom Sparrow.

Great effort. I'd add two names in Sam Gilbey and Bailey Humphrey into the mix as well with the later a good chance to push into round 1 calculations. Humphrey had a long lay off with injury but is proving a damaging half forward/mid for Gippsland. Don't think he'd be on our radar though considering our list needs.

A player to watch out for is Gippsland Power skipper and midfield bull Bailey Humphrey who had 31 disposals and kicked four goals against the Northern Knights on return from almost three months off with a meniscus tear. So impressive was his form that it’s likely he will be added to the Vic Country squad for the final NAB National Championship game vs Vic Metro.

You don’t have Rueban Ginbey in your group and he is a player we’re into

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
