Totally agree, but with the lists being smaller the club use it to keep known talent, tick Eddie betts was on a rookie contract, bit of a joke.  Is should be for new/young player given a chance to develop.  I can see the AFL making some changes on this, maybe putting a games played/time served limit on rookies.

They should just rename it the supplementary list given, let's face it. That's what it is.

What about Brander from West Coast? Pick 13 in 2017, homesick KPP looking to come home. Could be worth a punt given we wouldn't be giving up anything in return?

There might be a marketing tie-in with our wine sponsors, Bleasdale Vineyards.

Brander Vino has a nice ring to it.

I’m feeling ill.  I actually agree with Damien Barrett.  The dirty muck raking tool.

The rookie list. Really !!! Clubs delisting players and reselecting them as rookies. There is too many that are older players being given rookie lifelines on lower $ contracts.  Mitch Brown as a rookie. Shane Mumford last year !!! Rookie list should be restricted to players 23 or under at the start of the footy season calendar year.

ie. For 2022 season, players who were born in 1998 or later.

i understand it for the time being with covid budget cuts and players being owed money and clubs having to juggle it around but i completely agree that from 2023 onwards it should be set to either remotely for u21s OR only for first time afl players ie no age limit but they have to be recruited form outside the afl and after three years maximum as it is its up or out

It could do with a name change but it functions well as a list for players who don’t get longer contracts and who then go through a redrafting or training process to get back on a list. Whether they’re 19 or 35 doesn’t bother me.

The players are all eligible to play every week and anyone delisted then becomes a life time free agent so that works well for them too.

Yes perhaps the name “Rookie” should be updated to “Supplementary”.

I sense the Redleg campaign to get him to Melbourne is nearing an end?

I wonder, given he is another potential key forward and they have some young ruckmen, whether they will now use their early picks for immediate needs, rather than maybe a developing player, who might need several seasons before playing.

I like your thinking here 🤞Mac

Good to read that Lockhart might get another gig at GWS.

It’s a sign of a strong team when delisted players get picked up elsewhere. Jay had strong attack at the footy and could still strongly. With Jetta retiring, I thought he might be able to stay on and be considered for the small defensive role. Not to be so we wish him good luck.

Can we get Polec as a delisted free agent?

That dude has so many issues between the ears it’s not funny. Not sure it would be in the spirit anyway, but we would have to be convinced he could actually give a sheet before we even entertained it.

No in my irrelevant opinion

Hasn’t he really spiraled down in the last 2 years.

don't think he's really changed at all, north just find him irrelevent due to drafting and list strategy and are stuck with his 5yr deal

You overuse this GIF.

Like chronic visual flatulence desperately seeking an enema to end the agony. Bit like JN’s late movie career…

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
