Plus Freo don't need pick 6 for Lachie Neale anymore. Makes things slightly easier. Players will nominate the club they want to go to. If he nominates us and we can't come to an agreement with Freo, he will just end up at North and Freo will end up with nothing. North wouldn't be the worst back up plan for Cerra

Spot on. Usually players get to where they want to go. But I can see this one taking up the whole draft period as Freo will want to squeeze us for everything.

We are a properly run football now. Not only has our recruitment has been top notch but our approach has been reasonable, considered and respectful to all parties. We don't carry on like Essendon

I'm pretty sure

a) we're keen on Cerra and wouldn't waste his or our time if we didn't think we could get this done

b) we won't compromise our cap (ala the pies) to bring him in

c) we'll work with Freo to strike a fair trade. It will involve future picks but with little underage competition this year maybe the futures market makes more sense

If Cerra wants to join a well run club (and hopefully successful one) there is only one choice. I don't think he's being dishonorable or disrespectful asking Freo to deal with us. We have a strong track record of fairness in our dealing with other players and clubs.

Pretty sure one of the podcasts (may have been the RealFooty podcast) said Cerra wasn't chasing 750k, that's just what Freo offered for him to stay. He'll apparently take less to come home.

It may be tricky, but I agree we wouldn't be in this if we couldn't get it done. Could someone like Hunt be on the move? Surely he'd get us a second rounder.

Hunt won't be involved in any trade

Also, if he is looking for $700k then perhaps Carlton is the only team dysfunctional enough to pay it. He is a talented kid but seriously? What is this, his 3rd or 4th year? He is hardly the kind of elite game changer you’d give that kind of coin to. Maybe in a couple of years, but not at this point.

Agree. We don’t need to pay anymore than 600k. That should be our price. A good presentation, great money on offer, a chance to join a dynasty. Ball is in your court kinda approach. Be a part of something special and get paid well, but slightly under what you’d get at Carlton, where you currently have no coach, a shaky board, and a lot of work to do before you ever play finals.

Ambitious Adam: "Great, awesome opportunity to enjoy a decorated career".

Avaricious Adam: "But Carlton's offering me more money for less work".

Probably have accepted that he goes to Carlton.

We simply have no draft capital for Freo.

Once a player nominates a club though Dazzle it is fait acompli that it gets done, always, whatever it takes. When is the last time a player nominated a club and it didnt get done. Cant a player just say to other clubs Im only going to x,y,z and thats it? Might be bending Freo over but thats business!

its not a 100% success rate but close enough to it. Wasnt Daniher to Sydney a recent nomination that wasn't successful - im sure there are more.

Fair points made...as a counter-point there is a common denominator in the trade negotiations.

Yeah, I couldn’t resist making the point but the original poster is quite right, at least in principal, the deal virtually always gets done

Luke Ball is the last player i remember who took the nuclear option, walking out on St Kilda and getting to Collingwood via the draft. They used a second rounder too i think. Not sure why another club didn't try to pick him up but i guess they knew he wanted to get to the pies so no point selecting a player that doesn't want to be at your club. Doesn't happen too often though

Wonder if Goodwin and the recruitment team will take advantage of not being in quarantine and go and meet Cerra face to face this time instead of the zoom they conducted the other week?

Is Cerra still in Perth?

Exactly right, and that is a big difference.

You can absolutely hold a player to their contract, but you can do SFA if a player is out of contract and wants to go.

Freo can play hardball, and Cerra can just walk and put a massive price on his head and end up at bloody Norf. Who the hell wins out of that scenario? Definitely not Freo.

Bailey Laurie in the middle or do you reckon we target someone else?

I feel like if we don't get Cerra we will just reset our draft hand, maybe try secure some future picks off other clubs to give us more bargaining power next year.

We really don't need anything and have some reasonable players tied to the club we can nab for lower picks that can take the rookie spots.

It will be a big show of faith for Sparrow, Jordon, Bowey and Laurie if we do end up cutting a few of the older heads, it means there position is more secure.

Bowey to play on the wing next year for me and Gus back as a rotating inside mid. Bowey has the skills, great decision making, can he run all day though??

If Cerra decides to walk if does he nominate for the AFL pre-season draft or AFL national draft - i have never understood the difference in the two.

If its the national draft, does North take him at Pick 1? Is he worth that much? Carlton will grab him on the cheap at Pick 6 but GWS (2), GC Suns (3) Adelaide (4) all stand in the way and are a big risk for him. They probably wouldn't pick him given his desire to go back to Melbourne. So he could potentially get to Hawthorn at Pick 5 as well.

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
