I wouldn't want to win a "premiership" by being the top team when the season gets cancelled. That would actually be worse than being top when the season is canned and not being able to play finals.

Totally agree with this. Was merely riffing on the ‘Only could happen to us this year’ vibe.

My biggest concerns from here are:

  1. COVID disruptions impacting our fixture or preventing us supporters from being there at finals time
  2. Injuries disrupting our stable line-up
  3. the Bulldogs
  4. Geelong

Seconded.

Now - to 'blow the tanks' on this thread (if you'll allow me as watching Das Boot) - what can we do to remedy this for ourselves b/w here & September?

1. eat chocolate?

2. book a trip to Hawaii for 2026?

3. plant marijuana in the backyard 'for old Aunt Mabel'?

Why are the dogs suddenly a worry? We made them look like a VFL team only a few rounds ago

I still worry about Geelong. ?

Us and the Lions (as they showed on Friday) have the defence to deal with Cats attack. Not an issue.

Dogs defence too short, Power too flaky, rest not good enough.  On overall across the ground talebt its a Lions / Dees GF  to lose

Wow! That’s insane! Why on Earth would they do that? I thought these betting agencies would grudgingly hand over the winnings once we’ve won the flag. But I never imagined they’d pay out BEFORE the grannie. What’s in it for them?

I guess I’m just spewing because I also put money on us winning the flag but the TAB obviously doesn’t pay out early. All good, I don’t care if and/or when they pay me any amount; as long as we win the flag.

It was some sort of publicity thing. And I'm not the only beneficiary. TEN of us pocketed $2,300, so Sportsbet actually paid out $23,000. Nor am I the only one of the ten to post here on Demonland.

I’m not a gambler so I don’t cry over missed things coz I know I’d have given X 10 to get it, but anyway...

I asked a mad gambling mate why and he said that the money on us would have been nothing to them but by doing that they can entice the big time gamblers to put big $$$ on the collingwood’s of this world, and that’s where they clean up

We’re 12 wins, 2 losses - one loss of which we essentially won but for woeful umpiring (Crows), and the other of which we should’ve won but for woeful defending (Pies).

We’re currently 8 points clear of second place, mid-way the season.

Other than Tomlinson, we have no major injury concerns.

The team looks harmonious and united, on and off field, and most, if not all, of our key players have committed to the club through mid to long term deals.

It seems likely that we’ll finish in the top 4 and, unlike last year, the prelim and grand finals will be held at the MCG (our home ground).

In short, I’ve not seen a Demons team in over 20 years of supporting them better placed than we are now.

That said, I feel nervous. Almost uneasy.

I’ve read reports that Choco Williams might be Collingwood’s senior coach next year, that Yze is in the mix to replace Teague at Carlton. Burgess will be at the Crows next year. Jackson is homesick and will eventually move back to the Weagles. I fear that May or Lever will get injured in round 20.

While I’m probably boxing at shadows here (because we’re in an enviable and unusual position), I just can’t relax. It all feels like a house of cards is about to come crashing down.

I can’t work out whether it’s paranoia borne out of years of following a team prone to failure, or whether my concerns are real.

I’ve also got 500 bucks on us to win the flag at 17/1 (the entire proceeds of which go to my wife, to ensure she watches each game - with some level of enthusiasm).

Anyway,  it all feels a bit unreal - too good to be true territory. Anyway else feel this way?

I’d also like someone with inside knowledge to confirm that I’m completely wrong in relation to the Choco Williams, Yze and Burgess concerns.

Cheers, Ron.

Wow. That’s great! Yeah, that’d be a drop in the ocean for them. I also am not a gambler but I back against the Dees every week, have done for years. Sadly, I’ve collected much more than I’d like. This year, I’m bleeding money like there’s no tomoz and couldn’t be happier. ❤️?

Sure. I'm not of the view we can't beat them, but if I had to pick my biggest fear of our competitors, it's them.

I'm just happy that we've got ourselves into a position where we can worry about all of these things (should we choose to).

Actually, after Saturday night, I am working on the principle of one week at a time. Looking at it that way genuinely does get rid of the anxiety.

The two losses we've had were amazingly pertinent for me as a supporter (not important as I can't change the results on the ground) and, I'd suggest, for the team (which is the most important thing).

They demonstrated two things. Firstly, reputation and record mean nothing once you step out on the pitch. It's 22 blokes with two arms and two legs. You play the opposition in front of you and you don't bank the four points until the final siren. The more you are playing against an abstraction of who you're opposition are, regardless of whether you are the favorite or the underdog, the likelier you are to lose.

The second thing is that while attaining the record one needs to get into finals is a year long effort, we need to peak at the right time. Twelve wins has basically gotten us a spot in September, and allows us to be more tactical with selection, training loads and to slight tinker with the game plan. But that's all that does. Our fate is in our own hands from now until September to get into the highest position we can, and then that doesn't really matter that much as we then enter a whole new season.

By keeping things in the now, I don't get too worked up. I used to get snarky with people on here (besides 2013 as from round one of that year, the vast majority of us knew we were shagged) who declared seasons over based on the back of a few performances (see how the 'Is Goodwin the right guy? thread got started). We're in an inverse position now, as some are declaring the season a success before seeing the final result (i.e. where we ultimately finish).

In short, enjoy our wins for sure. Most of us sat through the dross of 2008-2014, so we know what lives on the other side. Nonetheless, let's not get too far ahead of ourselves.

But if* he did receive $2,300, that means the odds were, in fact, 23 to one

Incorrect.  If he had lost the bet, he would have lost his $100 stake.  By being paid out, he gets back that $100 plus the $2,200 winnings = $2,300 payout.  It was $2,200 winnings against $100 outlay, or 22/1.

Great effort nonetheless and well done to those who had the courage to back us.  Enjoy your winnings!

So, had he WON as opposed to being PAID OUT early, would there be a difference?

Because as far as I understand it, for every dollar he outlays he gets back $23. Therefore, the odds in this case were 23 to one  because:

$100 x 23 = $2,300

You keep forgetting that $100 of that was his to start with. He punted the $100, had a win/early payout (same thing) and got back $2,300.   He only wins $2,200.  He's not $2,300 in front overall.

Sorry WCW, but you clearly don't understand the difference between odds and payout.  In a previous life, I worked as a bookie's clerk so I know what I'm talking about.

They paid out weeks ago. After the Richmond win IIRC

They do this in the hope you'll reinvest, some if not all of your winnings and get it back that way.

The liablity mustn't have been to big for them. Can't imagine there were tens of thousands laid on the dees at 17 or 23-1.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
