Yes i recall now.  I've wondered that myself but the old adage "never judge a book by its cover" also applies to voice "appearance" i reckon SW.  He certainly sounds like he's a little off center from a business advice POV though i agree.

However, you have to be careful.  One of the smartest humans in a business sense i've had the privilege of working with you would never think of as such if you simply judged by speech and grasp of English (Aussie version of English!).    But there you have it.  This view could also be skewed by the fact that i'm not that clever myself though! ?

Wrong. You're a Melbourne supporter which clearly shows you're smart.

The last annual report I read had Hutchison earning something well north of 900k per annum as the CEO of SEN.

And on the topic of two first names . . .

Nothing will ever beat Ron Barassi's question on the day of the Bears/Lions merger in 1996 when the president of the new club, Brisbane Lions, Noel Gordon was being interviewed. He was smugly batting away questions concerning knifes, backs and 'cover of darkness' shenanigans. Ron listened to the BS being spoken for about five minutes without saying too much when I suspect he had finally had enough. A panel member threw to him asking, "Do you have any questions Ron?" Brasso, pausing for two or three seconds for affect, calmly and authoritatively asked Gordon, "What's it like having two first names?" The broadcast box fell silent. Brilliant radio and he had made his point. Then I think the host fell on the floor barely able to contain his laughter.

Two first names is not uncommon these days.

Just ask Cameron Bruce, Clayton Oliver, Bailey Laurie and even James Jordon.

Yep can't even record a promo properly. Obviously no-one coaching him when he recorded it

Yes he is pretty neutral but mostly just a wrap of weekend sport results.  Those bloody Imar ads are annoying though...the tradies mates...massive turn off ?  They would need the insurance though....some of the most out of control agro dangerous drivers i've ever encountered in 35 years of driving.  Possibly the gym & roid combo!?? ?

All of the ads are cringeworthy. All so predictable. And I can't stand the way there are like 10 in a row. And they manage to insert a bunch more throughout the "news" report

Shudder, the way her voice trails off at the end of each each sentence drives me nuts.

Talking about dodgy ads lol.  Why would any finance co. want to add that voice into the mix ?

SEN is only listenable on podcast. No ads, cut up into segments to find relevant content. They also upload pregame show with huddo, whately etc onto 'AFL Nation' podcast. Saturday Crunch time when Dermie isn't on, is also decent.

I'm certainly not sticking my hand up for that experiment SW

Lol ...

Useless facts #405 & 406

Conversely, have you noticed that commentators usually call players with surname type first names by both names, as if they were hyphenated surnames?  e.g. Aliir Aliir (hardly ever just called Aliir), Harris Andrews, Darcy Moore, numerous Bulldogs players whose first names are Bailey (and our boy Fritsch), Mason Cox, Basher Houli, Lin Jong.

And a player with a hyphenated surname occasionally gets called by only the second part, e.g.  (Neal)-Bullen !!

I clearly have too much time on my hands.

SEN Saturday night post match is a must listen. A quick wrap up cut short by a pre-recorded ‘gem’ called ‘This Sporting Life’ where largely forgotten sportspeople are metaphorically brought back from the dead (ironically sponsored by Tobin Brothers)

But if you’re patient, deep-voiced teenager Damian Watson (whom I can only assume is dating the Valley Girl newsreader mentioned here) adds some immediacy, taking us through the Saturday games with aplomb. And his most prominent caller appears to be ‘Mark from Taylors Lakes’. There was another caller ‘Mike’ who sounded suspiciously like Mark. He was from Patterson Lakes. Mark has views that would make a Qanon conspirator blush. And Damian tackles him head on with acerbic put downs. Perhaps the most biting was ‘Yes, I see your point’. As I say, it’s a must listen.

I find SEN pretty lowbrow these days, although I actually don’t mind Off The Bench on Saturday mornings.

It’s become a vehicle for horse racing, punting and adverts, with a bit of sport in between. Even Gerard Whately’s show, which I used to rate, has gone a bit 3AW as someone said previously.

I find “Off the Bench” intolerable on Saturday mornings.

Pickering and Hutchinson share “ in jokes”,which are annoying.

The  “first person self- congratulatory” rubbish suggests , wrongly, that they, themselves are not

conceited prigs.

Well you support the Dees that is definately a  sign of low IQ.

I'll post in this thread because it's about radio announcing although not SEN. Congratulations to Gerard Healy on 3AW who in last night's Sports Today show made the folllowing statement in a passionate call for more Thursday night football:

"Thursday night football should be on every day of the week".

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
