I love Fritsch and Salem but Boak isn't in the squad. That's insane.

Edit: Riewoldt and Crisp have also missed out on squad selection. But Sean Darcy (he's not getting picked over Gawn or Naitanui so why is he in the squad), Lyons and Seedsman all get picked?

PICKETT WAS ROBBED!!! 😈

He was close but I reckon Papley, Cameron and Greene in front.

Pickett isn't close.  He wandered out of too many games in the middle of the year

If Franklin gets picked then the AA process is flawed and is simply grown men getting together at playtime talking about their favourite players.

Having 7 players is even more than what I was expecting. Thank god the selectors compensated for their refusal to pick May last year.

I don't understand how there is even an argument that Gawn isn't the best ruckman in the competition. He is the most consistent, and has the most impact both in the ruck and around the ground. Nic Nat can't play more than 10 minutes without blowing up. Good player but not Gawn level.

Naitanui beats Gawn in these stats:

  1. Contested possessions: 12.4 to 10.5 per game
  2. Ground ball gets: 5.4 to 4.0
  3. Clearances: 7.2 to 4.5
  4. Hit outs to advantage: 12.3 to 10.3 (and on percentages 39.3% to 32.2%)
  5. Pressure acts: 13.4 to 10.5
  6. Tackles: 3.0 to 2.6

It's the clearances (combined with ground ball gets) and hit outs to advantage that stand out. They're flashy moments which people remember and think "wow, he's influencing this game". But the rest of his game is so weak. He doesn't hit the scoreboard, he doesn't take marks, doesn't drop back to defend, and spends 22% more of each game on the bench than Gawn (68.1% to 90%).

My firm view is Gawn is the deserving number 1 ruck and Naitanui, if a second ruck is to be picked, can sit on the bench.

Cant tell if this is sarcasm, but Pickett (while brilliant for his age) is no where near consistent enough for AA

Nic Nat is so overweight it's an embarrassment. If there's one thing i just do not understand about professional athletes it's how they can front up in poor condition. Indicates low standards and total lack of professionalism. I wouldn't have him in my team until he got himself into shape. I don;t understand why Simpson allows it. Imagine what kind of player he would be if he had Maxy's dedication.

Maxy every day of the week over Nic Nat

I know someone involved high up in the fitness at that club. 2 sets of rules for certain players but will not name names (but just look at particular physiques and its obvious). The coaches have tried and tried to get them fit with gym and diet but those players wont be told and staff have given up.

Voted on by subjective panel of ‘experts’.  If it was your team and you had to win a gf, who would you select?  Who has real form (based on this year)?  If it is based on favourites, the usual knobs will get in.

Honestly think they nailed the Dees players this year. Minor premiers always get the lions share. Thanks again Max!

I would anticipate Lever, Oliver, Trac and Gawn are locks for the 22 and should start getting their suits ready.

May should a have a suit on standby.

Fritsch and Salem needn’t worry but fantastic years nonetheless.

Id rather see them in a premiership team

Shame that Lingers' form dropped off after he was concussed. Would have been in the squad otherwise, and a chance for the final 22.

It makes a great story… his ninth AA and he’ll likely kick his 1000th. The press love that sh*t.

Caleb Daniel also missed out.

Daniel?‽???? BOWEY WAS ROBBED

Probably the most accurate 40-player squad in quite a few years, they didn't get too much wrong.

I am actually surprised Fritsch made the squad.

Only big error is Travis Boak.

I maintain that Gawn and Darcy were both better ruckmen over the 23 rounds than NicNat.

You mean Charlie Cameron right? Does he get in ahead of Greene? i reckon we will have 3 midfielders in the forward line (Trac, Stringer and Bonts to make way for more midfielders in the comp)

I'd have both Charlie Cameron and Greene in the side - Greene's pretty much an automatic selection, and I think Cameron has been the best genuine small forward for the year. He's been a tad inconsistent but 47 goals is a fair effort.

Buddy is a bit of a joke. And no Daniels or Boak is also weird. But overall not bad.
Not one Richmond player. Love it.

These stats are getting wilder and wilder.
When was the last time a team involved in a lightening storm won a premiership!? Probably never.

We are stuffed.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
