They might place Gawn back when LJ is on the ball and LJ as a floating forward when Gawn rucks

The key is getting Big Ben fit & firing and T-Mac into form

If that were to happen then Fritsch & Melksham can slot into their roles whilst the small forwards can battle for 1 or 2 spots (Kozzie,  Spargo & the kid Chandler)

We need 2 smalls in the team especially if Melky and Vanders are not fit or in firm.

Vanders is so far off fitness and form he could not on any basis be selected.

He'll play at some stage and that was the basis of my point.  Or have you ruled him out completely?

I wouldn't necessarily be playing too many of our listed small forward types unless they can be relied upon to play well

Jones will take up a spot at half forward and if Goodwin thought a bit more creatively he'd use Viney as a defensive forward or as a straight small forward

That would allow Oliver,  Brayshaw,  Harmes & Petracca to play where they are best suited ... on the ball and at the stoppages.  And Petracca may well have stints forward as well

So with 2 KPF's (pick any 2 out of T-Mac,  Ben Brown,  Mitch Brown,  Weideman,  Petty or Smith)  Fritsch, Melksham, Jones and maybe even Viney and LJ forward periodically,  1 other small forward is all that we might need.  Bench players are often midfield players as part of our rotations

We've played 2 or sometimes even 3 small forwards previously where none had an impact.  Liabilities as it turned out

If Jones doesn't play then maybe you'd play 2 other smalls but I'm inclined to believe that Viney will spend time in the forward line which then probably means that only one of Pickett,  Spargo or Chandler plays.  None of the 3 are bona-fide AFL standard players just yet anyway ...  the future holds the answer to whether they make it or not

And if ANB plays then we could easily end up with too many smalls in the forward line who aren't impact players

Not sure we can play Jones,  ANB,  Kozzie along with Spargo (or Chandler) in the one team.  And if Viney was playing forward I'd be only playing 2 of the 5 aforementioned in the same team

If Hunt can't hold down a spot across half back he'd be out the team as well ... another one who doesn't impact games often enough

No but I have clearly stated my view on the "heroes of 2018" including Jets Vanders Melky ANB and am of the opinion because of their age and Real lack of form and genuine contribution since are facing uphill battles To be included in our team going forwarded.

Even you would have to admit that none of those four players have improved and indeed through form and injury Have along with some other players not developing are responsible fir our disastrous campaign in 2019 And inconsistent 2020 season.

For us to Move forward and improve I  Firmly believe our development is clearly in the hands of the 2019 and 2020 draftees and trade acquisitions and 23-26 year olds improvement like Trac last season.

Any opportunities for the "30 Yo brigade" I see as depth mainly unless a dramatic change in form and confidence appears In their football. This is a great position if  it returns as a fall back situation.

There is so much potential in our youth that I am expecting a spike in form and confidence which could push us into Finals and who knows what might evolve. We can only dream of 2028 and an even happier result!

The team is a bit soft both physically & mentally so I'd be playing AVB if he can get himself fit and healthy

We need 2 or 3 players of his ilk ... they don't have to dominate the stats sheet either.  3 physical types in the 3 main areas of the ground (as long as they can play of course)

Melksham can play a lot better and needs to get to more contests but if he can return to his best form he plays as well

ANB is wasteful and I put him in that small forward type bracket (and you can't have too many of those types in the same team)

I'd be promoting LJ as another but the crowded forward lines these days aren't necessarily suited to a raw 19yo

He'll play no doubt because the kid has talent (he doesn't have a look around when attacking the ball) so being used as a utility is his go for now

For the early part of the season we might have to make do with a more mobile forward line but Gawn & LJ can't both play on the ball (at least not all the time) so do we rotate the big fellas forward?  Maybe

We need the big forwards to act like big movers, creating space not just a waiting, waiting huddle and this will provide variations and multiples in targets for our superior midfield and shore-tars complements.

There's room for one stay at home big forward ... but not 2 unless you're a team like Richmond who are clearly superior with regards to their rapid ball movement

Reiwoldt gets up the ground a bit anyway

Players like T-Mac & LJ are best suited to using their athleticism anyway so at least we don't have to train them up to playing elsewhere up the ground

I wouldn't be gifting games as that's why we are inconsistent and soft as a result.

Its a different matter if players are playing well but they are not even fit enough or in form.

One hard bump vs a skill is covered by the whole team being more aggressive and physical in its approach.

I reckon Rivers is a real chance. he looked so composed in his first year, can take a great mark. and hopefully he is encouraged to take the game on and run off HB this year

He will need some luck though, if Rowell plays the whole year and doesn't get injured, he will be tough to beat. Next most likely Tom Green

But the team has yet to show that more aggressive & physical approach so we need individuals to do that.  Just keeping it real

May does it in the backline and Viney does it out of the middle (a physical approach)  but our forward line is mostly insipid.  And unless we fix things we won't be playing finals

AVB adds that physicality to our forward line but if he can't get his fitness right we'll need other options

I’m going to put $100 on North not winning a game for the year. There’s no market as yet but when I ring up they’ll give me one. I can’t see who’ll they’ll beat. I know it’s never happened before but there’s a first time for everything.

You know there is not really a first time for everything. The first Magnum icecream to fly a spaceship to the sun and return on a bicycle dinking Dolly Partons brother.

I wouldn't be so hot-to-trot on that bet if i were you Bombay, 'cause you know as sure as [censored] that if you do place that bet that the only game that North will win will be against us! So turn on the aircon and cool your jets.

Now that is a bet worth taking. Roos win only game of the year against the Dees and hold us out of the 8.

They are a Monty for the spoon. Fair to say their rebuild of draft picks plus topping up via trade has failed miserably

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    TURNAROUND by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons won their first game at home this year in the traditional King’s Birthday Weekend clash with Collingwood VFL on Sunday in a dramatic turnaround on recent form that breathed new life into the beleaguered club’s season. The Demons led from the start to record a 52-point victory. It was their highest score and biggest winning margin by far for the 2024 season. BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
