Some people just don’t have the killer instinct and I believe Sam is one of them. Don’t think it can be coached into someone.

Lord Nev must be the greatest face Palmer on Demonland. Any player criticism is met with a face palm. Make a comment or go away LN.

Weid hasn't been performing, despite actually having his best ever season return on goals per game.

I've been trying to out my finger on what his issue is, because I don't like the descriptions about him not being competitive or caring or trying hard etc are quite right.

He seems to get caught in the wrong position a lot. Not in enough space to lead to the ball, but also not where the ball falls. It often drops in front of him or goes over his head. Does he misread the flight? Does he not move to the right areas?

Pack marks aren't his strength, but he tends to stay still a lot. Why isn't he moving into space, or trying to get the sit on packs by coming in from the side?

What actually is he lacking? Is it his skill/application, or is it the role he is trying to /being asked to play? He looks so much better when roaming around a bit more, taking marks etc.

He didn't lead at the ball once as far as I could tell. Maybe the time he marked it in the pocket. So gets very little separation and yet is terrible body on body,

Seemed to be in the same spots is BB

I am in the camp its 3 min to midnight on his career. he needs to find some niche pronto. Maybe that is defence where he can go at the ball and read the play. What else is there for him?

Shame. Looks like Tarzan plays like Jane.

The over reactions to every single performance Weid gives that doesn't mean Demonlanders expectations is pathetic.

He's a depth forward on a small and short contract and should be judged as such.

But all that is beside the point that we lost due to centre clearances and an injured defence. Not because of Weideman.

51 i50s for 7 goals including 1 after half time (yes he played FB for some of it) means all our fwds were largely putrid

You should watch the game again and see the quality of those inside 50s.

When Spargo has to take speccies for us to have a mark inside 50 then our efficiency isn't top notch.

To look at it on paper that is exactly right, he is a depth forward and that is a fair assessment. But for where we took him in the draft and the resources we've put into him is it also fair to have expected a bit more at this stage from him Nev?

That is reality biting - very hard to accept but honestly, selecting and developing two or three mobile, consistent forwards shouldn't be that difficult.

Not every draft pick ends up with a career relevant to their draft position. That's the luck of the draw. We've got a bunch of premiership players who can atest to that working out in the positive for us now too.

IMO Weid just cops these over the top harsh judgments because people are still expecting him to 'break out' and be this gun key forward. I accepted a few years ago he was likely to just continue his trajectory as a solid depth player and that's seemingly where he sits in the pecking order with the coaches so I just don't get the rage about him any more.

When you have a player like Tomlinson in the magoos, who could've been in AA conversation had he stayed fit last season, you have to find a way to fit him in. He's far too good for VFL.

Petty showed plenty as a fwd and could be a direct replacement for TMac, as he could swing back in case of emergency. He should've been picked forward and Thommo back. It would also be good for his development.

If it's BBB going out, sure, if you must, go with Weids, but he's just not a TMac replacement.

It is the reality of the draft sometimes I guess. You expect players taken high to have high ceilings and take games by the scruff of the neck when the truth is there are some that end up as bit-part players, so I do agree that we've been harsh at times.

I would like to see just a bit more of the basics from him though. I'd love to see him crash a pack, use his strength and let defenders know he's there. I don't need him to be a 50 goal a year forward but I'd love to see a more physical presence across 4 quarters.

Can't have someone in the side who's a habitual non performer and FYI the comments people are making aren't just based on the weekends performance

Agree Weid could be better, but I'm not 100% sure on the whole aggression thing people talk about with him, I think that's largely based on his demeanor rather than his output. I don't consider Ben Brown as an aggressive forward but he's been a consistent performer over the years despite that. Bit on the fence about that whole perception.

That's probably why he's not consistently in the side and remains a backup option.

Sure, but look at how active this thread is after the weekends game when our forwards weren't to blame for the loss. People just use it as an excuse to bring out old criticisms.

How much will power did it take not to just click the face palm button and not say a word? I’m not sure I could have resisted 🤣

God helps us if we get that desperate rpfc.

I actually think he would be fine as a back up ruck to Gawn. He was groomed for that before a unicorn of generational talent came along.

You can't see the wood for the trees on this.

He was drafted in 2015 hence is in his 7th year of AFL.

He has played 1 good game - a final no less against Geelong - and being generous say 3 other serviceable games.

That is a bust in anyone's language. He is a 2 grab mark and an unreliable set shot.

I'd trade him in a heart beat.

The Sad thing is Sam is not even good back up, because when he does get an opportunity he doesn’t stamp any authority on his position.
Yes he has helped in Goal Assists and some Ruck Work, but he was drafted as a Key Forward and at VFL Level he is every bit that. But at AFL Level we cannot trust him to do the job. We have given him EVERY Chance.

Ok, you trade him, and then who's our key forward depth next year?

The fact you're still harping on about his draft order says you don't understand where he sits within our list needs.

It's the old 'star or spud' mentality that footy fans without the patience or understanding of lists as a holistic picture don't seem to grasp.

We have definitely seen what happens - confirmed many times across many years (for many footballers) and that has been dismal with few  exceptions. Same old, same outcomes. Surely? He's now rather close to 10 years in the 'not going to improve' category so we cannot afford to keep him, invest further in his development, blindly turn the cheek in hope that something comes of him at the AFL level.

No I don't think it is, he doesn't have to be a star but he does have to contribute.

I hope the club doesn't stand in his way if he wants a trade and we can only get peanuts in return.

The bloke clearly needs a fresh start to realise the talent that he possesses. You don't accidently have a 24 possession/7 mark/3 goal performance in a final under the Friday night lights in front of 90,000. He also kicked 2 in the following final.

However, it's not working at Melbourne. He was called in to hopefully be an able replacement for an inform T Mac and he couldn't produce, and it's happened far too often with him. The Freo game should've been a line in the sand game for him but it was more of the same unfortunately.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
