My brother came across this while cleaning out the house today.

Someone must have the full set of 56 - all the sorry letters (and now emails) dating back to 1965.

It begins: "I feel sure that you are probably relieved that the football season, for us anyway, is now over." 

How else to spin a season in which we won 1 game, by 1 point?

The good news is the coach can see light at the the end of the tunnel, and if we donate to the club, the funds "will be utilised in acquiring some top name interstate recruits for next season."

Now where have I heard all that before?

That was at the Western Oval in round 3. Robert Flower took a big mark in the goal square at the railway (southern) end of the ground deep in time on. It was my first season going to watch the Dees and my first away game.

 And Wacko Jacko kicked 8. Flower must have used him as step ladder as Jacko rarely moved outside the goal square.

Geez. Why don't I remember that A de C ? I got my first duffle coat at the end of that season and had Jacko's name and number printed on the back. A year after that he was gone. He moved to St K (where his brother was) because we were too stuffy a club for him. Belting Robbie Flower at training probably didn't help his cause.

Jacko never liked teammates upstaging him or trespassing in his territory. Robbie must have gotten under Jacko’s skin early.  Bulldogs were also crap that season. They only won two games  in 1981 and one of those wins was the return game against us.

Yup. It was a very lean year. I went to every game bar the one against Geelong at the SCG. A year before they shipped poor old South Melbourne up there.

Not sure what year I got my Duffel coat but I saved my pennies and got Steven 35 Smith enblazoned on the back during the off season.
Season started and he changed to #1.

He liked Tom Scully mainly cause they shared the same 1st name.
Then decided he liked Mitch Clarke.
Then chose Jessie Hogan as his favourite player.
Then totally lost interest in the MFC.

LOL. Story of our lives. I used a stanley knife blade to round off the corners of the no 5 and then got a 9 printed on top. I then did the same with the letters and managed to change Mark Jackson to Dale Dickson. It must have taken me most of the summer to finish. I wasn't a fan of him but it was better than throwing out a good duffle coat. I had Crackers Keenan on it too and I think he just lasted the one season ??‍♂️ 

The numbers 2 and 11 were popular in our households for the generations. Lucky they were pretty safe bets.

Although I remember the tears when favourites like Farmer left the club.?

The highlight of the return game was Demon Graham Gaunt kicking the ball the wrong way which resulted in a Footscray goal. It was the turning point of the game and caused one supporter to blow up in an abusive tired directed at Barassi in the coaches box. High drama.

I had about 20 members cards from 67 till 90, in a draw , gathering dust. We got robbed.

Why would anyone take members cards from when Demons were terrible.

Those and the Hasselblad system. I was devastated.

Yeah, that's bizarre that they grabbed some used season tickets @640MD but I'd be far more gutted about losing the Hasselblad. Mine are also just sitting in a drawer at home but I live on the west side of town and I don't think they'd be on the Apex gang's shopping list.

Duffle coats are now replaced with red and blue hoodies. Which brings me to this just in (Language warning):

The apology did have a modicum of sincerity and the contrite players propelled us up the ladder to vertigo inducing 8th position in 1982 and 1983. However by 1985 we were  back to our mediocre worst and bottom feeding again until Northey came along.
