This was my thought exactly. Goodwin was already living in Melbourne, busy with his new role at Essendon by the time Smith got drafted.

Not sure how he could have mentored a young 18 year old he never met or had any associate with at all while working for another club, but also living in another state.

Ever heard of a phone? A ten minute call for some feedback over a particular issue or concern can do wonders.

Extremely common Axis. we have players that are mentored by players and assistants of other clubs right now. 

Not a lot of mental gymnastics required to understand why the Adelaide crows might ask a crows legend to provide some casual mentoring and advice to a player on their list. 

Mentoring of AFL players is an extremely varied thing, for some it's a few texts back and forth, for others it's a more hands on thing. In Goodys case it was obviously a much more indirect form.

Thank you DrEvil for the update which all sounds very Credible and mostly achievable.

While I can respect Goody's knowledge of Brodie Smith haven't we got a defender ( albeit to mind opposition smalls and with run and carry) in Lockhart plus Riv on the other HB flank to Hibbo with Salo hopefully up forward flank way still available.

A third Or fourth rounder Might get a good Draft prospect at say 50/55 or a Wantawsy  speedster from Somewhere or A Tom Phillips or even a Jarrad Polec with a combined 3 and 4 rounder!!

Or am I being a bit nit picky not trusting Goody's  judgement ??

I can understand players helping each other through the ALPFA. I mean Petracca did reference Pendlebury when discussing his improved form this year. Coaching staff at other clubs seems a stretch but I’ll take you word for it good Dr.

Any update on who the other surprise player on our radar is?

I am also well aware that players do reach out off their own bat like Petracca to Pendlebury. I know this is common with a lot of players having worked with a few ex and current AFL player through the TAC cup. I also understand if it was coaches as well if they have had some past working relationship. But clubs have enough coaching and mentor programs in place internally. Rarely clubs allow players to speak to other coaches from clubs because of the concern of being poached to that club. It might look common but its not..

But Goodwin and Smith don't. They'd never met each other at that time, They have had no past working relationship. Smith had just been drafted, and Goodwin was at Essendon. Usually how it works is when kids get drafted in that the first few weeks, they will be put In a buddy system program. Meaning the the club will put the draftee with an older experienced player to shadow and soak up as much as they can in their first few weeks at the club. Going external for mentors for an 18 year draftee who'd never met the guy is going a bit extreme first up. Clubs are very hesitant from overloading kids with too much.

Not distributing the Doc here at all because I'veenjoyed reading his content, but this one doesn't makes sense at all.

All I’m saying is that my info is there was some form of advice giving/mentoring/assistance provided by Simon Goodwin to some crows draftees on a casual basis for a period of time and that connection is a factor in our approach.

i don’t mind if posters believe that or not. I’m just here to share my info and based on the amount of likes my posts seem to be getting I’d suggest the majority of demonland appreciate me doing so.

In non football industry, many people have mentors who work for direct competitors. You might meet them through an industry association or be introduced to them by someone within your organisation. They may be directly related to your role or a more generalist. In fact mentors outside of your organisation at one of the best ways to help you learn and stay on track. Remember, mentoring is about listening and helping someone find their path, about providing an occassional external perspective. It isn't coaching.

I can't comment on whether the Smith/Goodwin story is true. But given Goodwin has a reputation for being a people person/relationship builder, and also for being a dedicated, hardworking footballer and coach, it wouldn't surprise me if Smith reached out based on reputation, or if someone at Adelaide said would you have a coffee with this kid when you're in town.

I work in the corporate world so what you say is true. What I would add though is the external mentor must be completely impartial/neutral. Internal mentors may have their own agenda and therefore will not necessarily give you advice which is in your best interests. There is a conflict of interest at play.

That’s what I see here as well. If Goodwin mentors Smith who then becomes a good player Goodwin might convince him to make a career move to Essendon (where he was coaching at the time) which may not or may not be in smith’s best interest. There’s an obvious conflict there.

I would be 100% against an assistant coach from West Coast mentoring young Rivers for instance. That coach would have an obvious incentive to sway his decision making in favour of the Eagles.
