Not quite true. I generally agree with @titan_uranus on Smith in that he's not a footballer, but he actually made a number of good spoils and rebounded off his man a number of times in the first three quarters. I wouldn't have him in my team, but he probably played his best defensive game ever today.

Pre season I heard one of those discussions with Plapp and Richardson in which they mentioned Smith’s “ freakish skills”. Then, in R1 v WC he went for a couple of speckies  and allowed easy goals . I think the “ freakishness” has been drummed out of him for this year. But I would persist. He is a lovely build and I think he is learning defence. He had some good moments v Cameron last week. He’s actually played v little footy

Good to get the win especially against the Bombers

We played 1 quarter though!

Should've won by 10+ goals Essendon are trash

Want trouble any side playing finals with fade outs like that to a bottom side once again.. same old issues & Goodwin can’t fix them... our fwd structures not working & can’t take a mark vs a bottom side taking marks & scoring, Weiderman goalless 4 games in a row

U do realise this is only the 4th last quarter we have lost out of 17?

Thank god our season is over.

I was at the game and we STILL LOOKED TOTALLY CONFUSED, can’t hit targets, kick goals, don’t look in the centre when playing, always playing the boundary side, players casually jogging around and play is stop and start with no flow or system what so ever.

Goodwin has to go. If he is there next season I hold NO HOPE that we will be any better.

We look totally lost and don’t play as a team at all. I saw ONE shepherd all game.

Not good enough. Bye bye Goodwin (I hope)

That’s right Buzzy, have a shot at Goodwin.  If we don’t make finals we nevertheless win 9/8. Means Goody has a favourable win / loss ration three years out of 4. What were the coaching records  of Hardwick, Bomber Thompson  and even Clarkson after 4 years.

tell me  Buzzy and all you Goodwin knockers— what precisely is wrong with his  Coaching ? He  did  make one awful blunder in team selection for the Freo match but otherwise I’ve seen little wrong   And Buzzy you are not happy about Tomlinson.. I’m not excited either. But I’m VERY excited about Langdon, Jackson, Kosi and Rivers. If u want to blame Goodwin for Tomlinson how do you rate his other three selections . And I rate the fact that the players rate him

I certainly question his playing hunt and smith in defence and melksham playing at all.

His dog like determination in persisting with tmac instead of brown. Omac at anytime.

His gameplan in windy conditions and his dear in the headlight performances on the many times we are getting smashed like the freo game.

He hasnt got shocking win/loss ratio but if we are to believe most commentators and punduts we are a good team not living up to our talent. ( ie 2018 we were one game away from a gf.)

So we either an average group of players who most of us overate or Goody is not a mastercoach.

I know Essendon are a rabble but that 2nd quarter was a hark back to the prelim finalists we were not long ago. In saying that I think a fair ammount of failure has to land on the coach and the sub coaches he surrounds himself with.

He's not a footballer and should be off the list next year. Not even worth persisting with as depth.

Still only 7 possessions (4 goals a great effort though), but his biggest issue is that when he goes missing he may as well be in another state. He needs to find the ball more, maybe that comes from be switched up a lot but whatever it is he doesn’t get enough of it.

Was going to comment on his 7 possies as well but thought with 4 majors it just doesnt matter.

Ok. So Plapp and Richardson know nothing?

Well wait for tmrw evening. Ordinary game. Essendons bags were on the tarmac at the airport and that is how they played.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll take a 7 possie 4 goal game from him every day of the week. That one in the final quarter in particular I liked because he backed his pace and finished well.

And his recruiting of Langdon, Jackson, Kosi, Rivers. No credit for that?

They certainly left nothing in the tank in the final.

So he's a recruiter now is he?

No on the contrary, I give him absolute bonus marks for them.

My comments are about the whole shebang.

If we dont play finals then I think my leaning towards putting blame on Goody has merit.

If we do then Ill apologise and be very happy.

Shout out to Nibbler for his goal in the second.

well deserved for keeping his eyes on the ball as the defender was running towards him flat out. Would have been shirt fronted in the 80’s, but was really brave of him I thought.

Well Doc, he is being criticised for our recruiting of Tomlinson. I agree, it is irrational . But if he was wrong about To linson , and it’s only a partial disappointment,  Then he must get credit fot the other 4

Everything you said is spot on.

Don't let anyone sell you blind hope. We are stuffed with Goodwin driving everything!

Out stoppage structure is completely out of whack and our ability to lock down is arguably getting worse!

Don't understand the possess the ball without scoring game plan.

If you don't keep scoring you can't win. Is this a soccer defence based plan?

I would prefer a mix of the ballistic style and the possession style.

I guess we don't have the consistency yet to deliver a top 4 berth.

I thought this game mirrored our season really. Looked good in patches, looked flakey for extended periods in pretty much every game except vs Pies and Giants. Won the games we should have and were pretty much middle of the road as the ladder shows.

Its a shame because we’ve got more talent than our ladder position suggests. Definite improvement on last year (obviously) but I don’t think the condensed season and more travel than just about everybody coupled with no bye did us any favours.

Why was Stringer wearing a fat suit under his jumper?

Now that his girlfriend is over 18, he doesn’t need to keep a tight body for her ? (I hate him so much. It’s personal ?)

Was that the same game I watched on TV Ox?

At least he can kick straight! That is worth gold in our side, first qtr we should have been 4.1 not 1.4. Missing so many set shots from 30 to 40 on slight angles just kills us.

  • CASEY: Sydney

The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and
it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
