It would be disappointing if Harmes has not accepted his role especially as so many others have accepted changes.  The most obvious example is Gus.  Not only has he accepted the wing role he has embraced it and is a real asset to the team.  Viney is spending time fwd,  Oliver is playing a bit more outside etc.  The irony is that all those role tweaks/changes enable Harmes to spend more time in the middle.

Harmes came as a life long dees fan, a rookie, made a real go of it and earnt a long term contract.  It would be sad for him to go.  He still has a few years to go on his contract so I guess it is his choice to play the team game or to move on.

Without going too hard, I would say one of Harmes' greatest issues is that he is a bit wrapped up in himself.

He's not a match winner, so he's a role player. If he doesn't want to play a role, he has no place

Harmes has a minimum 5 fend offs per game quota and he’s not holding his side of the bargain, only averaging 4.5

The more I've seen him play this year the more I think this comment just resonates that Harmes wants to be the top dog like Petracca, Oliver, Gawn.

These guys gets all the media attention and rave reviews and I think Harmes wants a piece of the action. This is why we are seeing more then ever the don't argues, fancy Hollywood handballs etc from Harmes. He's the wannabe Dusty, except reality is, he's a wish.com Dusty. This stuff wasn't in Harmes game back in 2018.

Unfortunately Harmes has too much tickets on himself and probably rates himself up there with Petracca and Oliver, when reality is he's just a good ordinary footballer.

You could also argue he has more opportunity at Melbourne than he would get elsewhere. No club is recruiting him to be an elite/frontline mid, they are recruiting him as a stopper or a role player - so the grass may look greener, but the situation will be the same no matter where he goes. This also relies on another club even wanting him

Don't know if clubs will also want a bloke that still has 3 years? Left on his contract.

If Harmes kicks 3 goals instead of 3 points on the weekend then no ones talking about his place in the side.

Constantly gets it, might not be as clean as other players but he defends hard and finds himself in the right positions to impact the game.

In regards to his fend offs, it seems he looks for the contact first rather than using it as a tool to push off his opponents to gain space and thats where he gets in a bit of trouble. I love that he gives it a crack through, the dude bleeds red and blue.

Weid (valued at: pick 30)
Pick 31 (tied to Bris)
Pick 54
Total points value - 1455, equivalent to pick 10
In exchange for Brayden Maynard.

Remaining assets to trade into the 2021 draft:

Pick 38 (tied to Hawks)
Future 2022 1st round draft pick (Melb) - will be assumed to be pick 18 by opposition to cover worst case scenario (in their eyes)
Total points value 1450 - equivalent to pick 10

Sign me up Lamby.

Would be a great deal for us but something to be considered is any picks Collingwood bring in this year are going to be swallowed up by a Daicos bid so they are likely going to be after picks in next years draft. Personally I rate Maynard so highly and would be vital to our structure (Hibbo replacement) id be happy to hand over our future 1st and be done with it. I think Maynard + Sidebottom for Weideman + future 1st is a fair deal for both sides that benefits what each side is trying to accomplish.

I can't see how Maynard is worth anything near the equivalent of pick 10.  Talk about overs!

In addition, I would like to retain Weed for at least another couple of years.

Finally I  wouldn't want that seagulling, chip-scab Sidebottom anywhere near my footy club.

Pies have picks 36, 41, 44, 45 = 1623 points

They need 2400 (?) to match a pick 1 bid (3000 points less 20% discount?)

Our picks 31 & 54 = 826 points

In total that'd be 2449 points, allowing them to avoid a deficit next year

So they'd gain the missing points needed for Daicos + Weid

It's laughable that Harmes is unhappy with his role. The defensive mid / tagger role plays to his strenghts. He's either delusional, badly advised or both. If he won't do the team thing and stick to his role we'll have to cut him lose.

Not even close to a top 10 pick. Would be a late first round/early second rounder at best.

Gives away too many unnecessary free kicks. We already get crucified with free kicks against, don't need to exacerbate the problem.

Firstly, don't get obsessed with the points equivalent. We'd essentially be throwing [censored] at a wall with later picks to assist the Pies with their Daicos bid.

Secondly, no way Maynard, who is contracted is only worth a 2nd rounder. He can play both tall and small. Don't get me wrong, he's not a guy you sell the farm over, but we'd be laughing if we didn't have to part ways with a first rounder for him.

Hes worth a late 1st rounder. Was incredibly stiff not to get All Australian last year and could go close again this year.

We need some outside class

I've been banging on about it the last few years

Would we look at Billings if he was the right price?

We don't need him to get 25 touches +

Noted goal kicker and just need him to play his role

We've been slowly chipping away over the last couple of years with more outside types.

Kossie and to a lesser extent Rivers are classy run & carry players.

Bowey into the side now, with Laurie to follow long term.

Billings is a weird one, seems be a whipping boy at the Saints. Wouldn't be against him but he feels like a bit of an in-between type player - too small to be a mid, not super quick either so not overly damaging up fwd or the perfect winger.

I'm not sure what to make of Billings either, looks awesome when he's on, but terrible when he's not and unfortunately those two outcomes occur as often as each other. I think Saints have stuffed with his role heaps and he'd do better if he was given just one position to knuckle down and in general I think he needs a change of scenery to get the best out of himself.

Quite amazing that Billings was pick #3

I think he has value and could play a role for us.

Would get him to work hard on his defensive elements as a starting point

I'd either get him at a good price or let it slide.

I like the way we've been navigating our needs through the draft and we don't need to act out of desperation and pay overs

There has to be something going on behind the scenes at St Kilda, they have so many blokes playing at 70%.

I think Billings could play a role for us, would add to the HFF rotation and knows how to kick goals.

Billings has never kicked more than 23 goals in a season. ANB's career best is 27 for context.

The more I look into Billings, the less convinced I am. The exception of course is if we view him as a pure wingman. But I actually can't really see them moving Gus.

l think we are all assuming alot about Harmes mindset, some of the posts are treating this as fact when there is no robust evidence and for the most part he plays team first footy

Goodwindees mail is pretty reliable. Harmes wasn't team first against the Suns and his form has been so so for awhile. His constant fend offs are getting tiresome as well.

All I’ve heard at this stage is that Barrass from WCE to Sydney Swans will get done on compassionate grounds, and I find it very hard to believe, however, I’m hearing that Harmes is not happy with his “role” at the Dees and will entertain trade talks at end of year.

Interesting on Harmes. I know he was a mad Dees fan growing up and he seems to have a lot of good mates at the club. But honestly he is very expandable so clearing  the 3 years left on his contract could be a blessing in disguise.

Going by Pert's interview on the podcast this week, we must have some nice possibilities lined up for next year.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
