Lever and Hore shouldn't play in the same team, they play the exact same role.
Petty/T.Mac in at CHB (this is the position/player we should target this trade season or we train Petty in that role)

Understand that call but the good teams have multiple intercept marking options and Hore can play the rebounding defenders role that Hibberd plays. He can play small and tall imo. 

TMac could not play CHB anymore, he's got the turning circle of a road train. Either he plays deep FF or gets traded. Weid could play CHF but prefer him leading inside 50.

100% T.Mac needs to be traded at season end, but I would rather see him in CHB in this team than anywhere near the forward line.
I think given the amount of experiments we've done this season (Fritsch in back line, May in forward line, O.Mac in forward line, Smith in the back line), I would at least expect a player who has played most his career in the back line, to get another shot and see what he can do with it.

Going forward, I see the key backs and forwards like this.

FF: Weid (Preuss & Gawn back ups)
CHF: Jackson/Petty
FB: May (O.Mac backup)
CHB: ???/Petty

Petty showed a bit last year in the forward line and then this year Jackson showed a bit. Either bring Petty off the bench and play 3 tall forwards and then recruit a CHB, or play Petty in the CHB role (which is what he was drafted to Melbourne to play).

He has the footy nous.
The block that he did for Weid in the Adelaide game, was more footy nous than T.Mac has ever shown in that forward line.

One of the few positives for the year. Very exciting young prospect.

Also think Rivers is one to watch as well.

The club did well in getting these blokes as well as getting the 24 olds Langdons and Lockhart.

Not much love for Pickett of late but he is young. Seems to have incredible pace and hes not afraid to put his body on the line. I think he will become a very good player.

Tomlison seems to play better when defending.

I wish we had seen more of Marty Hore this year.

So there are some very good newcomers mixed in with the perennial fillers. I dont mean to sound harsh but blokes like Anb and omac that never really shine and play good games consistently are examples of those.

Actually I think there are quite a few and the club could probably unload almost a dozen. Tmac is interesting because unlike blokes like wagner he was a genuine great player.

Alas that was 2 years ago so the jury is pretty much in on him.

If we can manage to pick up another 5 very good players we will do well.

I do think we need to buy some already proven ones especially a full forward and maybe a crumber type.

Up forward I believe we should replace Hannan and Melksham but keep Fritta. 

Lever needs to get back to the form he had at adelaide which is why he was picked.

This is pretty good. I would certainly argue that Melksham should be traded and if we have to keep avb he should play at chf.

It looks like a very strong team.

We have a number of areas where we need better players. Player with pace but also will to win. Here is my team but as you’ll see I’ve left Pickett out as at this stage  his performance so far is a long way from our best 22

Now this may seem harsh but if you look at this year and  last years performances there are players who are at best a little above VFL standard. Melsham can be good but rarely performs week in and week out. Spargo could find a place but he along with Pickett need a lot of development. Tomlinson could fill CHB but that’s with a maybe. Salem is another I have left out a good kick but lacks intensity and tends to be lazy at times. So as can be seen we are a fair way off with the players we currently have.

Agree, but Tomlinson doesn't offer much for me though. He's solid. Would he get a game in the top 4 teams? In our 22 just but a bit disappointing. Maybe better suited on the wings at MCG?

Melksham is good in a good side, a symptom rather than a cause.

Below is the team I'd run with assuming no big trades occur and we have our current list.

I expect the club to be quite pro-active and move a few players on, potentially trading Brayshaw and making a few surprise delistings.

I've heard from a source that Bennell likely won't be around next year. Body still not up to the rigours of AFL and he doesn't offer enough offensively to compensate for serious defensive shortcomings. 

There's a vacant wing that we need to bring someone in the play. I'd love a rounded midfielder like Shai Bolton or Zak Butters to help fill that spot and as a midfield/forward rotation. 

We also need another quality tall forward who hits the scoreboard. Not sure who's available or who we could land, but TMac has struggled and Weid can't carry the load on his own if he gets double and triple teamed. I still see Jackson as more of a ruck and follower than a forward, though he could help with our tall forward problem in the short term.

If that’s our starting 22 next year, we are not going anywhere fast - not having a go at you @Lord Travis it’s just showing we aren’t quite there.

Forward line lacks potency in my view and the group of Brayshaw, Harmes, Melksham, Oliver and Petracca are all too alike. I think we need a taller runner and a slippery/agile mid to replace two of Melksham/Harmes and Brayshaw.

T-Mac simply isn’t going to offer enough, so I’d be keen on Petty rather than him at CHF and would play Tomlinson at CH

Think there will be some guys jumping ship this off season, so hope we can fill the needs to improve our side by 20%

It's the team I'd pick from what's available, but I don't think it's a team that would be successful.

Our midfield and forward line both need a complete overhaul. I can't see success with our current crop. It's middle of the road at best.

I reckon we have the personnel for our forward line, just no consistency in them all playing together.

These players shouldn't appear in our forward line again.

Ditching 10 players and keeping 6 is an overhaul. I agree I think an overhaul is needed and mostly agree with the players you've suggested to keep. Not sure Bedford is much chop though, and Harmes would be rotational only, not a pure forward option.

The tall marking and goal kicking forward is our most obvious weakness. Weid is the only bonafide tall forward there, and he can't be relied on alone to carry that load. Jackson should be part-time forward only and also still have question marks about his intensity at the contests and aerial marking ability.

Bedford is only 2 games in and just needs real clear direction of what his role is. Can he be given that? I'm not sure.
Agree with Harmes being rotational, I think he can replace the role of Melksham quite well.

The other players (currently listed) who would help fill out those 6 are;

J. Smith (honestly would rather de-listed / traded, but not sure this will happen)
Sparrow (mid/forward)
Petracca (mid/forward)
Viney (mid/forward)

So I agree that we definitely need another tall marking target, as I'm not sure Petty is the right body type for that role and I genuinely think they should persist with him as a CHB.

We definitely need another mid sized body forward as well, to replace the Hannan role. 

Who do we target?

Daniher, Finlayson? Unfortunately I don't think there is a great choice for us out there, but beggars can't be choosers.

Lockhart still needs a good preseason, he's run out of puff, the shorter games have helped but the shorter breaks haven't. Hibbo's had a decent enough year but thrown in some bad mistakes recently, still does a lot of good when sticking a role and healthy. Lever has actually stepped up to the contest more this year and probably made a case to be a CHB and halve more contests, so I can see him playing as more of a stopper and getting a guy like Hore next to him.  Otherwise Tomlinson should be trained up as a key back, he's not going to be a winger anymore, just too slow. A preseason of backline contested work could see him improve and get more involved as an interceptor and rebounder.

The question is what do we do to make this unit better by diversifying talent. I still think Harmes can be trained in to a very proficient wingman with a few tweaks in his game and good coaching. Athletically he's perfect. Think a Mitch Robinson combative winger. Sparrow showed a knack for good support play. The big question here is do we trade out Gus or let Viney go via FA and attempt to change the mix of this group.

The Jackson/Weid combination is actually the best thing we've got going for us. Weid has put together enough of a block now to think he can really do it. Jackson just has to keep improving but there's a lot to like. Pickett keeps kicking points but he's has a very good first year, his pressure is legit. Fritsch, Melksham and Hannan frustrate but they all have the talent, it's a lot of mind over matter. Spargo's the best of the rest in an actual smart footballer with some skills, short of drafting a proper half forward flanker he's it.
