A truism no doubt.

However, it is the coach's responsibility to have players in the optimum shape before they go on the field to give them the maximum chance of doing the job.

This includes fitness, tactics, positions and attitude.

And selection in the first place Bbo

Not many decent players left to come in. May as well start preparing for 2021. Even if we miraculously win all 3 remaining matches and make finals, we’re not going to do any damage.

Give the Jordan, Bedford, Baker types a run.

This, no good to keep recycling the same NQR's

A good 6 changes. Considering that 3 are compulsory.

Sadly but true OD but liked the way Hore went about it

Has only played 14 games, a bit harsh by some !

He's a go-er! Has a little bit of mongrel at the ball. Doesn't chat with his opponents. Has a focus and tries very hard to achieve it. Must have a run - he is able to hold down CHB (ignore the height factor - Hardeman never had it) for at least half a game. Go for it, Hore!

Sorry 56 Hire is a one trick pony and only a Jake Lever replacement.

Whoever compared him with our CHB of the Century Gary Hardeman  has got to be Completely out of touch and no knowledge of the game!

BTW Gary played about a third of games at CHF with aplomb and was as successful as Tommy Mac in 2018 over about 3 seasons.

Could Hore do this NO unfortunately he is on the delist category with I fear Hannan Omac Chandler Nitschke and the wagners plus retirees Jets and Jonesy.

AVB is contracted so may survive And Brown also is only contracted for 2020.

Tommy Mac Melksham need to lift so Harmesy and Angus be more consistent.

plenty of spots to trade and draft thank goodness fir Langers Kossie Jacko Riv and Tommo who will all be a revelation next year ( as Langers has been this year).

My gut says we should get Ross Lyon on a 3 year deal and negotiate out Goody's contract and get a whole new team of assistant coaches and FD Manager.

Jetta         Tmac         Rivers

Lockhart   Lever         Hibberd

Langford   AVB           Salem

Viney         May           Trac

Fritsch      Weid         Hannan

Gawn Oliver Trac

Pruess Bennel Dunkley Baker

100% agree.

And the role coach in getting his players ready, be that for a whole season  or specific  clutch games or even quarters is the great intangible.

A related element us the ability of a ciach to firstly sell his/her system and get the required buy in and perhaps even more importantly explan and teach it so tve players know how to implement it.

It is a reasonable question to ask how well goody does this last element.

There will be 9 changes tomorrow. Possibly more with a ginger player or two having to get through training today.

In most sports competitors are trained to replicate certain actions without thought or instinctively.

We have seen games where our players hit targets, stick tackles, run and apply pressure to a high level. In other games, all of these skills either disappear totally or are inept in their application.

I'll grant that one or two players can have mares but with us it seems to be 3/4 of the team not doing the basics. Surely this is on the coach?

Well in the end it stops at his door.

Lucky that we dont have to travel so that should assist in players recovery but below would be my changes which hopefully will had some pace, skill, run and pressure!!

Out:
Brayshaw Jones Harmes OMAC Smith

In:
Lockhart Hibberd Hannan Hunt Pickett

Also dont mind the idea of May or Smith going forward again possibly depending how its playing out

Your mail is usually quite good so don't doubt it.  Will be good to see the likes of baker (and Jordan?) get a go...at last.

We know of 3 forced changes but 6 unforced?  Hardly a way to stabilise a team...?

I'm unsure of who is in and out. I do know that ANB has been named but needs to get through training with a sore hip.

Why worry about stabilising the team at this point in the season LH, we won’t play finals so it’s probably more important to see if there is any future for a few. And could they Be  much worse than 5 or 6 who have given very little most weeks.

Forgive my gross ignorance. Thank you for straightening out my errant considerations. ?

Agree a number never were but were carried along by the top ten, now 3- 4 of that 10 have dropped off or left and they now look like they always were, not good enough.

A wilting at the vine, it seems.

Weeds growing under the vines !

When asked who is in the frame for selection this week those mentioned by Goodwin were:  Baker, Hibberd, Jetta, Lockhart, Bedford, Preuss.

Its anyone's guess who might come out other than Brayshaw, Harmes and Jones who are injured.

Have we seen the last of Jones and Brayshaw in the red and blue?  Two weeks out at this time of this season is the end of the season. Lh I would not be surprised to see Gawn rested, I don’t think he has recovered from his injury.

I don’t think it matters who comes in or out, that fact is we will get out coached by a 1st year coach

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
