If Gawn doesn't play, which is looking more likely by the hour, then I'd say we make no change at all from the weekend.  The players should be right to go with the week off.

Happy for big Preuss to go again in the ruck.  He only needs to break even with English, or some bloke called Sweet who DeeSpencer thinks may be the second coming of Polly Farmer, and we'll be good to go.

To be honest i'm more worried about both the dogs and the saints than i was the pies.

I have a theory.

Which, in contrary to my normal tomes about such matters i will try to explain succinctly.

I think there are number of teams who have similar game plans to Goody. Not exactly the same of course but similar in terms of their philosophy, defensive system and zones. The Pies are one.

And there are a number of teams with different game plans, albeit not radically different. The saints and dogs are two examples.

My theory is we struggle against the teams with different game plans.

I think we need to bring in some speed against the Dogs and Saints.

Would be looking at Hunt, Bennell or Rivers in for Jones, Sparrow or Tomlinson. Although maybe only 1 or 2 of these changes.

Gawn for Pruess if he is 100% fit.

Would also not mind Bedford for Pickett as he isn't doing enough to be a lock.

Im confident vs the Dogs,   the Saints will be a different story.

Having said that we could easily be belted this week.. we are the Dees after all.

Hannan for Sparrow

Gawn for Preuss if fit

Otherwise no changes, everyone played their role well on Saturday

It has been very gracious of our opponents these last few weeks to arrange for their rucks to also be injured or sore while Gawn has been recovering.  Much appreciated.

Finally scored some tickets to the game... Taking my daughter along with me, she's been to two games, the gross 1 point win against GC last year. And the 69 point win against GC at the Gabba in 2018. So she's got 100% win rate with an average winning margin of 35 points. I made the stupid mistake to give her a jelly bean each time the demons kick a goal at the game to get her into it. The 2018 game she didn't fall asleep until the early hours of the next morning. That game last year she was getting pretty cranky....

Let's hope the boys get my kid on a huge sugar high and causes my missus grief for the rest of Saturday afternoon.

I reckon if we were able to watch games live, the criticism of Lockhart wouldn't exist. Has shut down a small forward every week is courageous, never out of position and has leg speed.

Apart from a couple of holding the ball calls against in his first game of the year, I'd say he's been pretty close to flawless.

I'm not exactly sure why the criticism of Lockhart exists in this instance either. He's solid and has very quickly grown into the role.

Dogs have played themselves into form this week after destroying Adel so hope we can bring them back down to earth

My concern is their speed, but going off last week we looks pretty quick ourselves (something I thought I'd never say)

Our backs are solid and provided we account for Naughton, we should be able to beat them here

Our midfield depth is better than their but need to stop Bont of course - however their spread is dangerous

Their backs are seedy as hell and we should get them here

One thing I want to see is Jacko back, we simply and utterly can not play Tmac.

He is a total liability now.

IN: Jackson

Out: Tmac

I do have a concern that Jones will look slow these next two weeks against two very face paced teams.

Surely Hunt could play a similar role.

I'm wondering if and possibly when they may rest Pickett.

He was looking a bit buggered by the last quarter on Saturday.

I think he may be important for leg speed over the next two weeks but wondering how he's tracking.

His work rate has been huge and I love watching him play but I'm wondering if there's  a rest coming up for him soon?

Jackson?  Keep dreaming, hes out at least another month unfortunately.

Damn that totally sucks about Jackson, first I've heard of it.

I just can't bear to watch Tmac - he is really struggling.

He's getting gifted games right now

I'd really like to see more of Rivers, maybe on a wing or middle.

Maybe give Jones an extra rest even though he's been pretty solid.

Otherwise looking like no changes.

It does have some merit over the next few weeks.  Hannan would probably be the better option for Jones though if we need a step up in pace and pressure inside 50.  Hunt averages the most tackles inside 50 when in the team but Hannan is the next best available here outside of those who played against the Pies.  Hannan also averages 1 goal a match vs Hunt 0.3 and a few more score involvements than Hunt... 3.9 vs 1.7 bringing others into the game.

Hannan also pushes a little higher up the ground at times, hopefully dragging his opponent away from the arc and creating a bit more space for others like Weid to lead in to.  Whereas Hunt is more a deep starting forward and might crowd out that area for the bigger fellas (Weid & T-Mac) and his inclusion might blow up a good thing we have at present.

I'm a huge Hannan fan so either would suit me.

I like Rivers too, but unsure who he could come in for

Have to remember that Hannan wasn’t dropped, he was out due to illness

He was good against North and I think he’ll return for Sparrow or possibly Kozzy

Thanks. Didn’t realise that.

he’d be a big chance to come in  His pace, pressure and intensity are needed

Gawn in for Preuss if Max is 100% fit and ready to go.

I would like to see Harmes given a rest a he is not in good form at all. Rivers to take his spot.

If Sparrow is in need of a rest then I would be inclined to give Jordan a run in his place.

These would be the only changes I would contemplate to last week's team.

We do have a solid block of travel and games coming up and I could see a lot of 'management' decisions related to selection over the coming weeks.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
