These days that’s not far off average/median wages.

But wouldn't 3 years also be the median contract length. Tying up 2.5 mil over 5 years for a player that is currently (as of this week) depth doesn't seem wise.

Yep- 500k is very little for a mature free agent.  He’s out of form; when in form, he’s best 22.

Hill was not a free agent; he’d have cost a fortune in cash and picks.

It's a better team. I like the inclusions of Jetta, Weid and Bennell not a fan of O.Mac prefer Brown. Lever and Melksham have to count themselves lucky. Tomlinson is a dud we never should have recruited, Hunt has lost it try him  down back again, Rivers needs time and so does Smith.

How well am I going:

Backed in Smith - he gets dropped.

Backed in Rivers - he gets dropped.

If anyone wants someone dropped just let me know and i'll be all over it for you.

On the other hand, really good to see Bennell and Weideman in the side, and I think Nev will bring in some experience as well.  Bit meh on Oscar but I'll be hoping he does well.

I just couldn't imagine Smith getting a game after last week. He was murdered by Riewoldt (not his fault as Riewoldt is a class above and he should never have been put on him to begin with), made crucial turnovers and was beaten in the contest often. He's just not a footballer for mine, not yet anyway. Id rather see him play forward where at least he can use his leap and speed to get to the footy to create an option but I guess that might come later in the year.

Good selections, I would have like to see Jones come in for Vandenberg as well but I guess 4 changes is a lot. With these selections Goodwin has flagged a return to a more traditional structure and has indicated that his "small ball" has been abandoned. Let's see how it plays out

Interested to see who gets the other wing with Tomlinson out - I would like Salem there but it will probably be Brayshaw.

Happy with Smith out. He was horrible as a back men. His game against Carlton was probably the worst I can remember from a Melbourne player.

He either needs to make it as a forward now or he’s an easy delist option with us having to reduce list size due to corona fallout.

Wouldn't give up on Tomlinson just yet.

Go and watch the movie (The Shining), an absolute classic. Jack Nicholson is brilliant.

Well we have seen some changes in team selection now let’s hope the coach can change his game plan to suit the players selected.

Tomlinson quite stiff to miss but he hasn't been anywhere near where I think we expected him to be.

Could O'mac coming in possibly mean my prediction/desire to see Steven May in the forward line come true?

No, we will need May to play on King OMac will not have the speed to go with him

But jeez it is tough on Smith. Worries me that they would go with a particular approach and then abandon it after only two games, particularly given he was ok against the tigers (he did a good job on Riewoldt).

And Tomlinson was poor but i would have given him one more chance and dropped Melksham in a heart beat

Sometimes I think I'm watching a different game to other people - Smith was terrible against the Tigers, just rubbish. He was not the reason we lost by any means but he didn't help. His positioning was terrible, his judgement was terrible (when to go for the spoil, when to not even attempt one), his turnovers killed us. I would have been absolutely shocked if he was not dropped.

I get the angst with Melksham, he was rubbish last week as well and not much better against the Cats. But at least Melksham has runs on the board and he is one of the few players we know is capable of kicking 4 goals. He is on thin ice but I get why he has been given another chance.

I'm hoping Oscar in means they've given up on Lever playing on a key forward. Let him be the third tall and float/intercept

Glad Bennell and Weid are back. If Weid isn't up to it, at least we'll know, but hopefully he gets some confidence and snags a few

Lever has been the 3rd tall. Smith was on Riewoldt last week and May on Lynch.

I agree that it's a touch ironic they choose to drop him after he actually probably plays his best defensive game. I feel it's a bit like how they dropped Oscar after he actually played well vs WC. I wouldn't go so far to say I'm a fan of OMac (certainly not your level!) but I think as a second tall defender he actually stacks up quite well. Those being critical of him last year need to remember he was playing as our NUMBER ONE tall defender with Frost taking the second key forward. He's not built for that but he is the right size and ability for the secondary position and I really think our structure works better with him in.

As for Where Smith goes, I really do see him as a forward. He plays like a forward, he leaps like a forward (very much reminds me of Robbo and Smith Snr), if Melksham continues his poor form I'd like to see a Smith shift forward and give him a crack at it.

Can he kick like a forward? That's my only question, if he can great, if he can't we're wasting time playing him there.

He obviously erased the career of Alastair Nicholson from his memory

You clearly have little onfield football knowledge if you don’t understand the value of impact players.  Further, a committee selects the team of which the coach has a single vote. “Coach’s favourites”?  What did he do to become a favourite? Give the coach his four ‘n twenty on pie night? It’s not Lang Lang 2’s.

"Impact players"? What does that even mean? Because he tackles hard? Who cares.

Averaging 10 disposals, 0 goals and 3 tackles. That's what you call 'impact'?

Haha a committee hey? You honestly think Goodwin has ever been out voted on selection? Laughable. The point was, you treat them all the same, they all have to earn their spot and perform to keep it. It shouldn't be one rule for vandenBerg and another one for everyone else.

Yep, you're definitely watching a different game to me.

Playing both Bennell & AVB is a little risky imo, considering they are managing their games time.

AVB has only averaged around 65%, and in only game Bennell has played it was 50%.

That was one of the big positives for Tomlinson - once he's out on the park he hardly comes off.

It might mean Gus has to play more game time which I’m happy with. And I think there’s a golden opportunity to rest AVB forward.

Goody seems to agree with you.

You are probably right about his game but he played on one the best forwards in the game for the whole game and kept him to 1 contested mark, 2 marks inside 50 and 1 goal zip.

As a point of comparison lynch kicked 3.2. Who was on him?

7 minutes ago, DubDee said:

And if Petracca was chipping it around the back line I’m sure his % would be higher. It’s a little different at stoppages.

You used Petracca as the comparison... ?

There are a lot of knocks on OMac, but kicking is not one of them.

Jason Johanissen (if you want a comparison with a defender) was rated as one of the best kicks last season, and he is 72.1 for career kicking efficiency. Still less than OMacs 74.4

It's Game Day and the Demons return to the MCG to face the Tigers in their annual Blockbuster on ANZAC Eve for the 10th time. • PREVIEW: Richmond

A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

  • NON-MFC: Round 07

Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans. Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
