I agree with you to a degree on Robbo, but on Davey im sorry he revolutionised the small forwards role as we know it today.

With his quieter than a librarian tackling, pace and exquisite finishing skills.

Props to Danners for having the tactical nous to recognise the strengths of Flash and implement such a revolutionary tactic with the skill set he possessed.

Danners wasn't the one laying all the librarian tackles, laser like chest high chiselers on Neitz's chest and kicking all the on the run goals was he MFM?

Occasionally he did,  and more-so later in his career.   But his staple in trade was chasing,  but not quite reaching... harassing. referred pressure.

I should have said I wouldnt have chosen Fowler and Biff because my memories of them werent that clear. My memories of Barassi arent that clear either. He was my hero but i can only remember him speaking to us before a Grand Final in 1967. Being short he told me to punch my opponents arms in a marking contest. :)

I have stronger memories in the 60's of Des Tuddenham whom, watching as a pie boy at the MCG in 1969 and 1970 won games off his own boot. He seemed under rated, as good as Leigh Mathews to me.

Im surprised I havent copped cr@p over Warren Dean but he had poise and grace and Alan Johnson was a brilliant kick  (and IMV)who only moved to the back pocket because he was sniped constantly on the ball and in the forward pocket.

Both Wight and Hardeman are under 6'-2"   OR 188cms.  a very short backline.

Forwardline is too tall.   3 big players, 6'-3" and over,  they'll get in one another's way.

There is a couple of tall players there,  who can play Key tall back.

 

And still no Grinter in that team.?

Lyon could play anywhere tall or small he spent time in the midfield. Can't fit Grinter in that team thought S.Febey was a better player.

Dean could have been anything but for that knee injury. Johnno moved to the back pocket when he returned from ripping his hamstring off the bone

Yep, the two who can play CHB,  are both Lyon and Neitz.    Neitz the better CHB.  Lyon the better tall Forward.

Wight and Hardeman could play above their height. Neitz is our leading goalkicker he should be at full forward.

Why, because of stats.?

Lyon is the better tall forward able to play all over the forward half and out to centreline kicking goals from 55.

Neita is a better straight line type player, and is even better suited to CHB,  where he can attack the ball in straight lines, and drive it forward.  Neita is better body on body,  that the backline needs,  than Lyon,  who is more lanky sinewy/wirey build,  less of a bull.

very tempted to include anthony ingerson or - preferably - paul prymke in there as additional tall cover down back, but i figure dollars can always push defensively to help shore up the backline if required

also a massive fan of glenn lovett - some of the best hands of any demon i've seen

others under consideration: jack viney, graeme yeats, rod grinter, travis johnstone, andy lovell, brad green, shane woewodin, bernie vince, russell robertson, cam bruce, jeff white, matthew whelan

goes to show how few "stars" we've had since the 'modern' afl era when you look at that side - and those that we have had have regularly been broken by injury

I accept that this team, plus or minus one or two players, is the best Melbourne side of the last 50 years. Unfortunately, I don't think it would beat any other team's best side of the last 50 years. And that includes GWS, Fremantle and possibly even Gold Coast.
