No it didn't ! One of Green's first games for the club. A big lump of a bloke shepherded away a Carlton defender about to smother Green's kick. That was David Schwartz. 

The last 15 minutes of that game was the most fun I've ever had watching the dees play. 

Watching the bitter tears of the Carlton fans around me after the siren was just beautiful.

    Coming back from 21points & watching the Carlton fans in disbelief was awesome. 
     

    Daniher got the best out that side considering Melb had the worst training facilities at the Junction oval along with their preseason done across multiple venues & using plastic cones for goal posts! 
    Team unity/chemistry is everything!

    Probably the best game of football I have seen from a supporter viewpoint.

    Brad Green was and should have been an elite forward.  The leading and kicking skills of this teenager was unbelievable.

    Daniher achieved plenty with a lot of ballast, but gee wiz, his rotation policy (12 max per game) was really the stuff of the 1960s and 70s.

    What horrified me that day was that the savagery and brutality was akin to colosseum  days. The day Wallis punched the crap out of Green Hardwick was holding him wide open to the punches. I don't call that sport...

    He was there when Wallis' punch nearly cracked Brad Green's larynx

    He remonstrated for about two seconds

    Even Neitz failed to stand up that day

    He was the only one who even tried to fly the flag. Gave Hird a bodyslam from memory though was all a bit late.

    Cam Bruce stood up big for us in the last quarter of the QF as well

    I concur with the comments above, one of my favourite and most enjoyable days at the footy. We've beaten the Blues in some memorable games in my time, 88 PF, 94 QF and 2000 QF not to mention ruining their occasion in the last match at Princes Park

    I remember all the stunned Blues supporters around us that day as we rolled over them in the last quarter. When the siren went I was walking out up the aisle just yelling out "we're going to the Granny! We're going to the Granny!" which I knew we would after cementing the week off

    At least Hardwick & Wallis had the decency to do it to a player looking at them.

    [censored] Michael Long just about decapitated poor Troy Simmonds who was bending over to pick up the ball. Hero Long decided to try and snap his neck off. Gutless. Weak. Dog Act.

    I rarely harbour a grudge on a personal level, but i cannot fathom how any decent human being could forgive that pr!ck. Hope the fat [censored] will one day get a taste of his own medicine.

    Melbourne doesn't like to play finals type footy,  which is very aggressive footy. The Bombers came to play,  and came to Win.

    And they brought their  'A'  game with them,  on the day.  AGGRESSION.

     

    No on can blame them for giving everything they had,  to win the game. And they did.

    It's difficult to fly the flag stiffly,    when no one else does that.that whole team lacked starch across the 20 players. 

    About half a dozen players had the 'balls' to back themselves up in that list.    No where near enough starch, for a Flag tilt.

     

    Typical Melbourne,  post Smith era.

    Checker and Smith teams would not allow oppositions to run all over them Physically.  We are too nice as a club. to a fault.

    One of the best games ive ever seen us win alongside the 94 win against Carlton with my dad. I find that bitter sweet though, as its kind of embarrassing that these are the quintessential wins of my 30 years barracking, and no grand final wins etc

    Stunned to put it mildly, a fight broke out on the ponsford upper level after the siren. I assume it was a livid blue not used to having a finals win not served up on a silver platter and a gloating demon fan giving it to them after they prob gave it to them all 1dt half

    We had a ceiling that was well below EFC unless we learnt how to FLOOD them, which in retrospect, we shouldve done. 

    We were beneath them as a collective and did not have enough football talent to negate any physicality they imposed. I mean with all due respect to our defense, but does:

    26 Daniel Ward 27 Anthony Ingerson 44 Alistair Nicholson
    HB: 42 Peter Walsh 28 Matthew Collins 21 Steven Febey

    Look at all like a premiership defense? Honest battlers that give it their all, but were blown out of the water. I know our forwards didnt give much of a yelp, but they were simply matched up well with a competent defense. And our mids gave it their all too but we just could not stem the tide when they had too much strength on every line inspite of any thuggery

    Out gunned pure and simple, nothing to do with balls. You dont get to a GF without balls.

    Yes most of that is true, But...

    Teams love it when they play Melbourne.  Why.?   IMO, because we play 'nice'.   Front runners (our lack of defencive pressure),  and bruise free is too often the way.   When we've had it on a platter we fire up.   When the tough stuff was about, we'd get sheepish and distracted. 

    I think this nature is a reflection of the majority of our support base,  and so the players reflect this in there playing style. They are wildly applauded for playing clean heels footy.  But our hard dirty work is met with subtle quiet praise. Or sometimes condemnation by the unease of our support base.

     

    Other clubs roar approval for their players when they do some heavy work.  And those opposition players reflect that approval in their style.

     

    How many coaches recently have said they would make us Melbourne, a hard team to play against...?   Because they know of our reputation as a club.  And why we always have to  re-earn the respect,  after having lost it once again.  These are our 'spots',  Pre Checker and post Smithy,  and Pre Barassi and post Northey.

    We should never ever go back to playing like  'Fuscias',  again.

    Plenty of teams have got there without balls. (too nice as pie)  But few have won the day.

    The premiership clocks we had 87-91 , 94, 98-2006 we lacked the polish vs the premiership sides, though 94 I’d say our spine was the strongest with Lyon, Schwartz , Neitz , Stynes, Jackovich, Tingay , Lovell , but in 95 we were decimated with injuries  & many never returned Bottom line in the last 30 yrs club hasn’t been able to sustain success long enough & improve the list enough in those premiership clocks, 2019 is just another example!

      Having convincingly defeated last year’s premier and decisively outplayed the runner-up with 8.2 in the final quarter, nothing epitomized the Melbourne Football Club’s performance more than its 1.12 final half, particularly the eight consecutive behinds in the last term, against a struggling St Kilda team in the midst of a dismal losing streak. Just when stability and consistency were anticipated within the Demon ranks, they delivered a quintessential performance marked by instability and ill-conceived decisions, with the most striking aspect being their inaccuracy in kicking for goal, which suggested a lack of preparation (instead of sleeping in their hotel in Alice, were they having a night on the turps) rather than a well-rested team. Let’s face it - this kicking disease that makes them look like raw amateurs is becoming a millstone around the team’s neck.

      The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

    • REPORT: St. Kilda

      Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds. 
      This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
