    That appears different to the northern hemisphere, (which might be sensible, I’m not a doctor)

    I wonder what this will mean for the rest of the season? I had optimism, but not so sure now.

    Note- I know many people have far more concerning issues than if we’ll see football again in 2020. For those, I wish you the best and hope for the best.

    Look after yourself No10. I think I could safely say that all Demonlanders wish you a speedy recovery.

    To give you something to do while you're in lockdown, could you explain your name? Are you a particular fan of Melbourne players who have worn the No 10 guernsey or are you referencing instead your favourite British Prime Minister(s)?

    Get yourself to hospital mate.   Guard against it becoming Pneumonia, which it sounds like it could well becoming.

    Those in Victoria - would always wanna play footy. Enough people can get together (when allowed) and reform our 12 clubs - in Victoria. Allow the hipster set around Fitzroy have a team.

    Thats ridiculous and narrow minded and really pretty silly. Lots of people without jobs if there is NO AFL, not even talking about players. Suggest you pull your head in and show some empathy.

    Don't agree with the sentiment of your post but you're right in that the players may have to get a day job to supplement a potential pay cut going forward.

    I also think we should explore the idea (as should other clubs) of playing a few home games down at GMHBA stadium against poor drawing sides - if we're in dire financial trouble next year, and on the assumption we can receive a nice cheque for the game.

    The stadium will soon hold 40,000 people so it should be utilised more than 9 times a season.

    I don't think we'll be able to afford to play certain games at the G if we can't make a profit from those games.

    I also sincerely hope the AFL will give us one of Queens Birthday or Anzac Eve as a home game next year, despite 2021 being our turn to be the away side for both marquee events.

    Worth looking at but the reason Geelong make the money they do there are reserved seats, super boxes and ground advertising from a clean stadium.For us to get anywhere near similar revenues would require us to hire the stadium for  an almost nominal sum which is effectively what Geelong gets it for due to government subsidies.

    You may recall that there was  a push for a 30,000 seat stadium in the Olympic precinct for the very reasons you suggest.

    The AFL are desperate if they think they can play into December

    Due to the World T20 cup all the major grounds are booked for October and November. Sure they can play in Alice Springs and at Docklands etc but there comes a time when the season would be an embarrassment (think Essendon with its players banned).

    If I was the TV media rights owner I would be offering 50% at best of the contracted rate.

    Is there  a quiet agenda to get a 'hipster' team into the AFL?

    Whereabouts are you in London? I live in Ealing (actually just moved a week before they brought in the tougher measures). I've *touch wood* been able to stay healthy and avoid getting sick but I also know that Ealing is one of the higher rated areas which genuinely makes me worry about going out.

    That said if you're not far from me and need someone to drop off essentials (beer etc) I'd be happy to help.

    Like you I thought the AFL would get a couple of rounds out of the way before pausing the season, but it sounds like Australia is making a similar mistake to the UK in that they've got a foot in both camp. Containment, but not restricting movement/non-essential work. Mixed messages stuffed up the UK (London in particular which should have locked down 1-2 weeks ago), I really hope it won't happen in Australia.

    Thanks La Dee. My symptoms are mild thankfully, the breathing and tiredness is a different experience. Interesting to see how the players cope, without wishing them to be infected.

    My name was a moment of failed creativity. However, given Boris is now also infected I could claim solidarity.
    It was the current 10, Gus that caught my eye as the type of player I admire. He's not as flashy as Oliver or Trac, but highly skilled. He's hard but more composed than Jones. He's witty and well spoken without the big personality of Max.

    He's the glue of a team.

    I love all these players, but Gus feels like the reliable constant. That I appreciate. Thanks La Dee

    I believe in the long term there will be a return to some form of healthy competition. The virus will go but the world economy will likely be devastated. The worst horrors are yet to come. The government will provide bread and circuses like the Romans did to keep the plebs from becoming too restless.

    Hey Pates! I saw you recently mention London as being home.
    I'm in Notting Hill - also had a high infection rate here, though haven't checked in a while.

    That's an incredibly kind offer, we have plenty of supplies currently and no shortage of alcohol, thankfully!

    The government responses do seem a mess, though even in hindsight I couldn't say how it should've been handled. Seems like a global experiment that we wont see results for another month or few.

    I'm not usually much for symbolic public displays, but the clapping and cheering last night was moving. The health care workers are in real danger.

    Hope you stay healthy. At least you have some quality time to setup your new home. Be well.

    Totally agree, I wasn't sure if the people in Ealing would get behind it but I was really pleased to see that they did. All the health care workers must be working to the point of exhaustion so I hope it provided them with good feels to know that people appreciate their efforts.

    I think we were involved in both double headers - vs Sydney (loss) and Geelong (win) and both games were the ‘curtain raiser’.

    Should Directors & CEO's of Multi-Nationals,  still receive their multi-million dollars salaries.?

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie? 
      Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG. Unfortunately, performances like these went against the grain of what Melbourne has been producing from virtually midway through 2024 and extending right through to the present day. This is a game between two clubs who have faltered over the past couple of years because their disposal efficiency is appalling. Neither of them can hit the side of a barn door but history tells us that every once in a while such teams have their lucky days or come up against an opponent in even worse shape and hence, one of them will come up trumps in this match.

      Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

      Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read.
