Demonland 74,431 Posted March 17, 2020 Posted March 17, 2020 AFL to make a decision on Round 1 tomorrow. Just doesn’t have enough info on whether to go ahead. Will put out a statement confirming that within the hour Quote

What about rehab, weights, medicals, match debriefs, team meetings, dieticians etc etc etc for ALL the teams? Of course. But all hotels have large meetings spaces, conference rooms and smaller meeting rooms. And of course proper kitchens and no doubt medical facilities. All of the hotels have their own gyms. Probabaly not up to the standard nneed but AAMI park, Punt road and the g all have gyms etc. Gyms in the CBD will likely be closed so each club could could hire their own gym 24-7 (and cut a goo deal as gyms will otherwise likely close). You could also use marvel for training and it has any number of meetings spaces, i assume a gym and entertainment areas if it was felt that was useful. For us it would be no different (apart from living in a hotel of course), train at Goshs and do weights etc at AAMI. Completely clean the place and the next team gets their turn. repat at Punt road, the G, AAMI park and Marvel As i noted the 1200 people i have suggested be involved include all 800 odd players, coaching staff, medicos and staff like dietitians etc etc. All admin and FD staff could video conference as required. Doable 1 Quote

Or, The top two teams of each conference play the top two of the other conference and the winners play in a GF next week. Sadly, we lost second spot by losing to Carlton so we won't feature. Quote
Demonland 74,431 Posted March 17, 2020 Posted March 17, 2020 MEMBERS of the Melbourne Football Club have rallied around the Club in the wake of the news that crowds won’t be allowed into games for the foreseeable future due to COVID-19. In an impressive display of unity and loyalty, over 100 people purchased Melbourne memberships on Monday, generating over $10,000 of revenue for the Demons. 8 6 Quote

Let Adelaide and Port bash each other silly for the next six weeks in an endless series of derbies, and if one of those teams falls foul we can all maybe watch West Coast and Freo keep going at it. And then the massive Q clash!!! Who the hell do we get?! Nooorrrfff. Aints? In all seriousness this is the door cracked ajar for the AFL to “massage” the comp even further their way. Glad another sane person on here is hearing me. Quote

It's consistent with the other idea which I've seen media claim is a done deal although I haven't seen anything official, that allows or requires clubs to extend their lists to 50 players. I am surprised at the amount of cynicism in this thread. We are in very unusual times and the various measures being announced or talked about all deserve consideration. Some might be good ideas and others not so much, but at least the AFL is trying to keep the competition going. I know some (like SWYL) think it's crazy to play a contact sport. The alternative view is that society needs to be entertained at a time like this, and AFL games, albeit with no crowds, is one way of doing that. There’s a difference between consideration and enacting. Shorter quarters doesn’t make sense....until we start playing multiple games a week. Teams have trained to be stronger and fitter to outlast against their opponents. We should have been training for speed instead of endurance now. 2 Quote

Jimcor2 125 Posted March 17, 2020 Posted March 17, 2020 Slightly off topic but I just wanted to say that I live in Lucca in Italy and that, from our experience, the most important thing to do is to stop the spread of the virus....by whatever means necessary. We have been in significant lockdown for almost two weeks and the rate of infection will continue for at least a couple more weeks. There are no sports events taking place, we are permitted to leave our house for three reasons only; shopping, to go to work, or for health-related reasons. No shops other than supermarkets, food shops or pharmacies are permitted to open. No bars or restaurants...and you know how Italians love their coffee! Walking outside is only permitted for one of the above three reasons e.g. to go shopping. All shops restrict entry to enforce a minimum one meter distance between shoppers - maybe 50 people in the supermarket at a time. The reason for these measures is because this virus is a beast and spreads amazingly quickly. If the spread not slowed hospitals and doctors will be overwhelmed because it often impacts on the lungs and the demand for intensive care exceeds the ability to provide it. Inevitably, it will hit Australia similarly so I urge you to start the 'social distancing' required. Italians are not known for their rules-following behaviour but I can tell you that they are certainly taking this seriously. Good luck! 22 1 Quote

Dame Gaga 2,453 Posted March 17, 2020 Posted March 17, 2020 The Chief Medical Officer is recommending social distancing even now. The government is still looking at what measures will need to be taken to combat this evolving crisis. What will happen when they enforce social distancing and order everyone to stay home? There is no social distance in contact sport. The season will have to be cancelled, won't it? 1 1 Quote

No tourists (hence no 'lucre') and very little dog-walking. A group of fellow expat Australians & English have been going to watch the local soccer team (La Lucchese 1905) but those games were all suspended a few weeks ago. I have been watching the footy via Watch AFL and the discount I get with the MFC membership so I am used to remote supporting. The town is sooooooooooooo quiet. 1 1 Quote

The walls designed by Da Vinci are worth the visit alone. Spent two weeks there a couple of years ago in an apartment. A very special place. Stay safe... and yes very clean.. the first time I had ever seen ladies driving the garbage trucks !!! 1 Quote
