How can that stand at Punt Road not have a heritage protection?

It was, then it wasn't. Then the National Trust came in and tried to stop Richmond knocking it down.

But Richmond starting talking about it helping local community, women's football, indigenous groups and foundations and it was a battle they'd never win.

Happened to be in the committee room at Caulfied yesterday when J Kanga, during a pre-lunch speech, said in the future at Caulfied, there will be the MRC, and there will also be the MFC. I nearly fell off my chair. No details were given, he was just addressing his Demons loving mate at the time who I think heads up Mornington race track. My wife had to assure me l wasn't hearing things. Unfortunately didn't speak to him in person but hey, maybe things are well progressed like a couple on here have mentioned???

They're kinda on their own turf though so to speak.

To celebrate 40 years since being kicked off the G by the MCC and not having a home base since, i'll be posting a hit song each week from 1985. First cab off the rank...

Geelong's should be "Money for Nothing"

No need to, as they own their land on the West side of the course and the Dees will be on Crown land on the South East Corner and also with an oval or two in the middle of the track, also on Crown land.

The school and the MFC are in total alignment and that is from the horse’s mouth .

So good to hear some positive news in this space.... it could really make or break our club... just can't wait for a official update on progress

I heard from senior execs at MRC a while back (1 year +) that the MRC and trust were all good with MFC coming on board but the dees just had to stump up the cash. “Someone needs to help pay for the new grandstand” was the comment (or along those lines).

That's good news if the MRC are OK with us - however it's a hollow comment, as they have no say in our project. Our plan does not involve any money for building grandstands for the MRC. The MFC plan does not envisage any grandstands at all - because our ovals are inside the track.

Selling the stables land to the school has achieved that.

Just telling ya what I heard from the Kangas mouth. I have zero behind d the scenes info but I wouldn't think this good operator would spew [censored] in a public room full of old money. Not I BTW unfortunately.

That’s important re getting Kanga onside as he’d been dead against it from the start. As much as he theoretically “can’t do anything about it”, he can absolutely throw various spanners in the works. Placating him, if true, is an important little win.

Kanga’s support isn’t essential but it’s welcome. Lock this in and we’re automatically better off. It amazes me that so much land sits there barely being used. Our facilities will still leave plenty of grass for dogs to poop on. NIMBY’s can GAGF.

Another Final series and still no home base where supporters who cant get tickets can gather and watch the competing teams on big Screens.

No doubt the AFL would make such an arrangement expensive but it could be used as a club fund raiser if possible.

Its why any proposal should include an entertainment and retail sector to benefit from activity generated by the club presence.

Are we there yet ????

It all comes under the Trust - the ‘stands’ I was referring to has nothing to do with any potential MFC development, but helping pay off recent/future developments in the vicinity.

When I say ‘the MRC said they are good with it’ I believe the inference was ‘the trust is good with it, so long as the cash is there’…

Wonderful news.

The new option being sprouted for the guineas carpark directly opposite the train station will be fantastic for fan access - retail/social/dining hub immediately comes to mind there.

Well that’s thrown me.

I didn’t see that area as the new training base and am not sure other than being closer to the train, why it is being considered, but it sounds as though it is now very close to being finalised in the approval stage.

Hope there is some car parking for dees fans who want to attend training too, as the area is heavily used by train travellers who park their cars all day.

This is more unnecessary scope creep from fans that can’t agree on what this should be.

Entertainment and retail? Wut?

Is it elite training facilities?

Is it facilities closer to where players want to live?

Is it co-location of admin?

Is it a place for the fans to gather and have a beer?

I mean, WTF are we talking about here.

Link behind wall ?

The new area is by far the biggest area so far suggested.

I am just unsure of the tunnel they are mentioning.

I know of two tunnels there, one to the inner car park for cars from Glen Eira Road and the other a pedestrian one from the inner car park to the grandstand. Not sure if there is another, but wouldn’t think that one would be suitable.

Anyway it sounds like it will finally be green lit. Great for the Dees.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
