Astonishing that people are falling for the won't be viable line. Seriously, when do you think GWS or GC will be viable in their own right?

A Tassie team (some say they'll be the Tassie Tigers, or Tassie Devils...but me, I say call them the Tassie Maps) is inevitable, and fully deserved. Tassie has supplied more champions than its relatively small population would suggest likely. The game is (used to be) loved down there, but the truth is, it is in trouble and a Tassie team would help restore its status If you don't believe it's in trouble consider that Burnie, one of the teams that ushered Russell Robertson into our ranks, no longer has a team. The suggestion that Tasmania will always support the game is ignorant of what is happening.

As for viable, viable is what the AFL decides is viable. They propped us up, they are propping up the expansion clubs and they have the capacity to prop up Tasmania while it develops its team. Incidentally, there are already climate change refugees already bolstering its population which is increasing, hence its economic capacity is rising also.

Another reason for liking a genuine Tasmanian team is that it pulls some millions out of two of our competitors.

Car'n the Maps of Tasmania!!

What a logo that would be.

If you can justify the Gold Coast you can have a team anywhere.... but then again I could never see the sense in the Suns.

The Tasmania debate will come on at the same time as the TV/streaming renewal. Hawks and North will try to push the can down the road and at the same time the Hawks will come under even more pressure to drop their pokies.

And of course there's the five relatively marginal federal seats in Tasmania !!

Hang on for the ride. Pity it will be mainly fought out behind closed doors.

Still drives my Green Bay can fill 80,000 seat stadium in a 100,000 city why not Tassie.

Different country, different sport, different demographic and geographic, different history, different costs, different sponsor attraction, different TV coverage, etc...

Ross would be a reasonable site. Makes a good day out from populations of both sides of the border.

Tasmania has been divided historically as descendants of criminals (South) and free settlers(North) which why the troops were garrisoned in Ross.

its why the two team options has worked so well both regions can support their side. So it's important that the local feeder leagues get some support and that the State team has a blend from all regions.

At least the population supports the game. Liked and support the wafl idea a women's side would probably be a good litmus test.

Jon Ralph has written an article in hun based purely on input/opinion from ricky nixon who cans the idea of a tassie afl team.

Just how low and desperate can ralph get?

STARS WON’T GO TO TASSIE: NIXON

—JON RALPH

Player management pioneer Ricky Nixon says a Tasmanian stand-alone would never be able to retain enough superstar talent to be an AFL powerhouse.

And Nixon believes the league would have to hand the team an extra salary cap allowance to keep its list together.

Nixon has represented many of the game’s megastars including Nick Riewoldt, Gary Ablett Sr, Jason Dunstall, Tony Lockett and Wayne Carey.

Having negotiated massive endorsement deals for those players as well as dozens who have considered moving states, he believes retention would be one of the team’s biggest challenges.......................................

I'd have thought that players from Vic would be happier to play in Tassie than in WA or especially QLD.

It will only get funded if it involves female changing rooms and a swimming pool that nobody wants or asked for.

Player retention would be a major hurdle.
like the Swans, The Map of Tassie would need to be successful each year or it would wither.

of course it's a potential factor, but why would ralph put his name to an article that is all from nixon. does he not know nixon is toxic or does he enjoy dancing with the wolves?

as its the home  of the tassie  Hawks , as the signs  says as you out of the airport

it has to be either Hawks or North take it over full time

both already have support there , I would imagine some of these members and supporters wouldn't change to a new team

maybe North play 8-10 games a year there and slowly decreases more Melbourne games , they can go back to Kangaroos again

they can hop there and back ?

cant see a 19th team just yet but hey its the AFL

Well he does work for the hun. He doesn’t have to lie much lower.
Ralph referred to him as a “revered player manager” whereas you and i would look at it differently.
Nixon was obviously having a “good day” and his points were quite valid :)

I'd love to see a Tassie team and I'd love to see North Melbourne fold, but holy hell would I struggle to support a team that took on the roos as part of their history

Yes they will;  with global warming, etc, Tassy will continue to grow and warm,  and Hobart will further develop. ideal for wannabe farmlet hopefuls.

Its a pity that Burnie doesn't host the 'Spirit of Tassy' as that would cut the time of travel across the Bass Straight.

And better yet would be the old Ally Cat,  if it had traveled between Hastings and Burnie.   A shorter, quicker and cheaper,  alternate route.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
