Whatever gets him over the line I say...

I suggest that will be a fair chunk of what we were planning to spend on Elliot....performance loaded of course!

We simply do not need another player with a history of chronic injury. A waste of time and resources trying to get another player fit to play with the high risk that he will breakdown again.

Chronic hamstring injury is something that never goes away. Footy is stop start and requires sudden acceleration like a sprinter coming out of the blocks time and time again.

A no for me.

Wrong injury Ernie, he had calf problems.

I'd still rather see him train with us and get picked up as a supplemental rookie after a period of training than race in with a list spot before we even know if he can run.

If other clubs are willing to give him a list spot straight up then we have a more difficult decision to make.

If Bennell passes the medical I'd be very happy that we take him in the PSD. He fits our need for a skillful outside mid and is much better proven in this role compared to Jack Martin, who by comparison will cost at least $400k more. In reality he'd probably cost us $200k per annum on a two year deal at the expense of one of JKH, Stretch or KK as a list spot. This is an opportunity that is worth the risk.

Don't need the PSD, he just declares his club and that is it.

Why have Freo given up?

As I hear it, his ankle / Achilles / calf region is cactus. Won't play again.

Would love him fit and firing at Demonland. Exactly what we need.

Can't see it, tho.

Who you hearing IT from? Calf is his problem not ankle/achilles.

We have a bevy of new medical gurus so I guess we have to trust them to make the right call.

But to be honest I don't have a good feeling about his ability both physical and mental to cut it at AFL level.

Even if we dont end up taking the chance with Bennell, im really pleased that our club, which has a reputation for being ultra conservative, is at least taking the time to give him the once-over.

The supporters have been craving some risk-taking, and this is just another example of how our club has changed. (Trading up to pick 8 this year and risking the loss of a very high pick to North next year being another)

From the outside it COULD look like desperation, but from where i sit, this seems more like a club just willing to back itself, and its people, to identify risky choices that could have huge rewards.

Go for it Dees.

Yep- but as you’ve alluded to, there are big risks involved with that.  Would hate to see him carve up the track with is Dec-Jan only to see Hawthorn descend from on high to offer a contract that trumps ours.  If he joins a team for preseason, you can bet every club will be watching him very closely.

Have to back in our medical team.  If they think the can get him up and playing... I’m all for taking the risk.

You have to look at Bennell as the last pick in the draft, on a low contract and who you would ordinarily expect to play some games with Casey and then be delisted.

Anything better than that is a win.

(A) they were paying too much for average talent

(B) chance of them regaining full fitness was uncertain.

I'm surprised his name alone doesn't give you the horrors old dee.

In the case of the one who played for us, did you say average talent or average character?

This one actually had the talent but sadly it was way to briefly shown and I doubt will be seen again.

I remember him destroying us a the G early in his career. Moved beautifully, got a tonne of possessions and from memory he might have kicked a few goals too. I remember thinking how much i would love for him to be be at the dees.

If we can get him i'll be thrilled. One because of his talent, but as important if we do select him it means that the club has dome their homework and decided he  is ready to contribute physically and mentally ie they are not going to take a punt on him if they think he is a risk from a cultural perceptive

i remember that game. He and Ablett put on a master class. Unfortunately a lot has happened since then and i doubt his ability to return to that sort of form.

A good update Harley Bennell

Reading between the lines Sydney are red hot, Geelong lukewarm and Demons don't get much of a mention.

Thought this was interesting:  As a delisted free agent, Bennell is able to begin training with multiple clubs as of Friday, but if he does so he'll need to nominate for the draft.  If not, the 27-year-old can begin paid training with only one club from December 3, where he will join that club on a trial basis and will be eligible for practice and pre-season games. The club will then have the option of picking him up in the supplementary selection period.

We may get an early indication from Friday of his intentions.

No doubt Bennell can play. But so could Balic, Mitch Clarke, Kolodjashnij, Templeton, Owen, Vardy, Carman, Ellis and a host of other 'stars' we imported so we could park them on our injured list.

NO THANK YOU.

so does this mean he gets to nominate which club he wants to train with?

And basically if he goes into the national draft any club can draft him with any given draft selection?

That is how I read it.

As a DFA he can avoid the draft it he trains with just one club from this week.  I read it as he goes into the draft only if he trains with multiple clubs.  Could be wrong.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the

We'll break down the Match SIM against North Melbourne and wrap up the preseason with insights into training and our latest recruits.
