State of Origin for Bushfire Appeal

I can't see how the logistics of this would work.

They'd raise much more money if they dedicated Round 1 to bushfire relief.

The places devastated by fire are going to need money and support for months, if not years to come.  There's no need to rush an event of this scale.

Shouldn't be any need for any donations. The PM stated early on and subsequently that he has it all covered.

Donations by celebrities and rich is just a different form of income distribution, and your right it's a long journey.

Governments of all persuasions have difficulty making/selling/undertaking long term policies.

Perhaps we are not prepared for that.

I think people who have been wanting a return of ‘State of Origin’ will be disappointed.  This will be a fundraising exhibition match and will almost be in bad taste for the players to take it too seriously.

Hopefully raises a lot of much needed funds, but don’t expect there to be much action on field.

Lets hope all funds taken for food and drink are all donated by the catering companies.

100% should be given to those who lost so much.

I have issues to where is the accountability of all the money being donated, who will co-ordinate and distribute it and how it will be distributed? There will be many people who have lost everything who need money but many others will be compensated by insurance etc. Will some go to upgrade fire prevention services? There may be millions poured into token efforts to save the few injured animal rescued. What is certain is that the money will not help restore the destroyed environment, burnt forests and lives lost both human and animal. I have donated money but have absolutely no clue to how it will be spent. I just hope organisations and fund raisers do the right thing.

Tend to agree with you adc, when lots of money is involved largess appears. Also who is dediding where the AFL money goes?

Gill!

Having said that there is much to do and the need for money and lots of it is high. I guess we just have to accept that substantial amounts will not be spent wisely and be happy that the majority of money will hit the right spots. To do anything else means that no one will get the much needed funds.

For an example of some of the dodgy fund raising, minor but poignant.  Yesterday I took my car in for a service at a dealership. I was told if I forgo the washing of my car they will donate $10 to the bushfire appeal. I told them no,  wash my car and I will happily donate an extra $50 myself and why they don’t  just donate the money without any pre conditions on customer largess? They are a big organisation. They are saving more money and time by not washing my car and $10 donation per car is a pittance for them. Can I be sure they will be actually donating the money? More likely are being self serving and taking advantage by donation shaming.

Surely tax incentives involved on their part.?   if they donate my money to a legit fundraising effort,  can they then claim it in the tax refunds.?

Hats off to Warney for Auctioning his baggy Green .

Of the $1.075 million raised , Warney has decided to donate the whole $7500 to the bushfire appeal which eclipses the Warne foundations generosity by a full percentage point.

If the media announcements so far today are correct then it's going to be played on the 28th Feb, which is the same date as round 2 of the preseason comp I believe. So Gawn (likely our only representation) will just be running around with different players but still doing the same things.

Ahem, Clarry Choo Choo??

That Vic team appears more balanced.

I'm all for it, but it should be Victoria versus South Australia and Western Australia versus and Allies team (which isn't perfect but better than All Stars).

Have a look at that SA side that @Demonland has posted on page 2 - it's embarrassingly ordinary

I think they'll go in with extended benches and each play more than one ruck.

Well sure, if that guy stated something then I’m going to sleep well tonight.

And surprisingly it seems the payment of volunteers has quite a few unexpected conditions. He'd make an excellent AFL board member.

Has a great charitable track record, our Warnie.

So given the number of bush fire charities... some National, some State based.... is there any word on how the proceeds will be divided.

It seemed as if the whole purpose of the Anzac Eve clash at the MCG between the Demons and the Tigers was building toward that single, unforgettable moment when Kozzie Pickett soared above Campbell Gray and all but fittingly etched his name onto the face of the 2026 Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes Medal.
