Best 22 (@ first week of finals, no injuries) i think VDB is depth until is clear injuries are under control, I like Hannan but I think we have seen his max. Obviously I rate ANB and in a side with better kicks his running will become more useful.

Might be nice to see a practice match between your two teams. You might encounter a few surprises.

This is necessarily a wild prediction with the incredible variability of form and injury we've had these last couple of season.  But here goes!

No draftees in the firsts, for me. Plus faith in Weid's and T.Mc's form, and of course a few players injury recovery. And a wild belief in Viney working out as a rotating forward pocket/inside mid.  In fact, my vision for the future includes almost a ridiculous picture where our forward rotation will sometimes look include a complete and viable alternate followers group (i.e. Jackson, Viney, Petracca, Melksham)

BEST 22

F:         Viney           Wiedemann    Fritsch

HF:       Melksham      T. Mc       Petracca

C :        Salem          Harmes        Langdon

HB:      Hibberd          Lever        Tomlinson

B:         Jetta               May           Hore

FOLL:   GAWN      Oliver   Brayshaw

INT:     Smith    Jones   VanDenberg   Hannan

I'd say there are half a dozen players there who are playing for their spot on the team by the end of 2020. Thankfully mostly from the interchange group.

NEXT 22

F:       Pickett       Jackson      Chandler

HF:     Bedford    Brown      Bennell

C :      Hunt           Neal-Bullen   Wagner

HB :   Wagner      Petty         Kolodjashnij

B:      Lockhart     O.Mc       Rivers

FOLL:  Preuss   Baker  Sparrow

INT:   Spargo, Nietske, Bedford, Jordan

I'd say there are half a dozen players there who would realistically be expected / hope to be 'not just depth' AFL level over the course of 2020 and demanding a spot in the best 22.

And poor bean-pole Bradke, may he blossom and thrive and cast all doubts aside.

In my opinion if Jones is starting 22 we are in trouble. Melksham definitely starting 22.

O'Mac would need to improve greatly to even be considered. I see Tomlinson as a swing man not really a winger. Would prefer to see Salem make it his own but he needs to really hurt the opposition more ,rather than just linking with Dinky Kicks. Hunt maybe another option here if his discipline improves.

If Hunt could recover 2017 form that would be ideal and Salem needs to get faster ( if he can) and as you say make the opposition pay with more direct and speedy disposal.

Am curious to your thoughts, note that i peg my teams after a year of home and away. I would agree some spots are very much in play. I have gone for footy skills, marking and speed.

Sadly, looking at the training photos, VDB's legs have wasted as badly as Trengove's did, he is a long way off. I love his heart and grunt, but can't see him doing much primetime for a while, happy to be wrong. Bennell amd Kolo are in because of natural skills, obviously they need to be fit. While Hannan's final highlights remain a joy, i think he goes missing to often to be more than depth. And to me Jones plays mid or fwd but not back.  He could swap but I like Melks for this role more (and yes i feel a bit dirty)

The Press - Best 22

MELBOURNE

Recruits Ed Langdon (pictured below) and Adam Tomlinson assume wing roles, while first-round draft pick Kozzy Pickett edges out Jay Lockhart to be the small forward but this may be a bit premature. Oscar McDonald is better suited to playing on the second-best tall forward and wins a berth over Harry Petty and Marty Hore. Alex Neal-Bullen had an awful 2019 but is an endurance and pressure specialist and a best-22 staple when in form. Mitch Hannan and Tom Sparrow are around the mark, and Joel Smith and Aaron vandenBerg will have roles to play after neither appeared this year because of injury. Mitch Brown could be the third tall forward, if the Demons opt for a bigger frontline. Harley Bennell is training with Melbourne and could be a valuable addition via the pre-season supplemental selection period. – Marc McGowan

Smith is training with the defenders and can hopefully take OMac's spot. Hopefully Hore can push ANB out + it gives the side a better balance as Hunt and Fritsch will both want to be spending more time forward.

I think Hibberd, the Weid, ANB and Jones may struggle for a game.

OMc would prefer on 3rd tall.

I like Petty because he plays with some niggle.

If Joel or Aaron get fit we should play them because they can get injured looking in the mirror.

Hore and Lockhart should force their way in somehow.

I think McGowan has done a pretty good job there. I'd prefer Petty to OMac but Petty is training with the forwards.   I'd have AVB and Hannan for Hunt and ANB on the bench but they need to get fit to play.  There's an opportunity at small forward and someone has to grab it and it could well be Pickett.

McGowan's wage and expense account clearly can't afford him a trip down to Gosch's because he's got a whole bunch of names in the wrong spots there. Most clearly with Harmes at half forward rather than half back and a lot of the depth in the wrong spots. Including naming Lockhart as a crumbing forward option.

Perhaps because if May takes Darling it’s hard to imagine Lever playing one on one on Kennedy... or Hibberd or Fros....

Brown is a competent lead up mark who gets in the right spots and contests.

Its a shame I see him as a threat to Weideman’s position in the best 22.

And can we play Gawn and Preuss? I don’t think the jury is back in because 2019 was a dumpster fire; who knows if they can play together in a good team...

I know you don't like the idea 'rp' but it's much more likely to be Gawn and Jackson...

If we throw him into the ruck in 2020 he will be cut in half.

I would play him on a flank if he plays at all.

Our hand might be forced if injuries are anything like 2019 but I see Pickett as a stronger chance to play 15+ games than Jackson.

May on Kennedy, Lever on Darling O.Mac shouldn't be anywhere near our best 22

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
