He has a very tailored program - suspect Burgess' hand at work.

Hope they can make it 23-26 games instead of 22!  ;)

Surely that was Misso's brief also right! Right?

If it was something went very wrong last off-season and pre-season.   I recall May saying he didn't know what the club expected fitness wise until he showed up for the pre-season which I think was in November.

I read this as a fresh approach, especially the running that matches the demands of his role and focusing on core:

“My running is a lot different – very role specific running,” May said.

“A lot of repeat efforts, like two or three quick efforts then you walk for a bit rather than just running 1km – that’s just not what we do in a game.

“There’s still an aspect of that certain base line endurance that you need to play the game, but I think to be the best defender, being able to maximise those high intensity efforts will allow me to stop a forward getting the ball.”

“It’s more my core, my hammys and glutes.."

Turned up a little fat, ran his backside off - was easily beating Frost and others in the repeat 200’s - in a desire to get him to play as a CHB and ran himself in to OP.

Hoping both May and the club are smarter this year. We need him as a 2 way player covering ground but we shouldn’t try to make him in to something he isn’t.

What really happened last Summer? Not just Steven, but the whole list.

Did Misson just go into cruise control to get through the year? Something was seriously amiss that we have not been told about.

I would have thought those running patterns Steven is talking about were standard AFL requirements, not looked at as innovative

Huh, OP? Where did you hear that mate? A couple of weeks out with a groin injury isn't the same as OP is it?

10 weeks requiring a significant deloading and reloading period is. Doesn't really matter what the terminology or pathology was but it was an overload injury not just a one off strain. Hence in the article above May is talking about strengthening his core.

Can you provide a source of some sort where you read he had OP?

It's what I was told but if you want to read my original post as groin overload injury then that's fine too and probably more accurate these days. Same for Joel Smith. Or Joey Daniher.

Yeh, it matters a lot actually.

OP is a much more severe injury to a tear or strain.

Even so, a recurrent groin tear still requires a great deal of carefully planned conditioning and management.

Fair enough if it's what you were told, not saying you're wrong, just hadn't heard that dreaded term mentioned in regards to May before and it makes me worry.

If we get 22 games out of him in 2020 I will be astounded as I don't think his body can cope with the standard required at a club with a serious intent to play finals.

Will help if he reports in shape to day 1 of Preseason.

That's probably a good start but the real work starts from there.

Will prove all doubters wrong next year with AA fullback honours.

Has all the tools to do so, just get his body right and he’ll be magnificent.

and doesn't get reported in round 1 let alone the practice match.

Like your confidence Steve but sadly I cannot share it.

That's a tough call: Christian allowed plenty to get away with incidents similar to Mays...JUST FOR THE RECORD.

So that makes it ok?

Wouldn’t be a normal day on demonland without your positive reinforcement. ?

He proved he was capable of working hard in 2019 preseason but was cruelled by starting unfit,

I still don't believe it was a reportable offence. The Brisbane player basically ran into him, he was looking the other way and May braced himself for impact. Also, if it's okay for one player to do it and not get penalised then ....I won't go on...

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
