Points wise, 12 and 18 are worth slightly more than pick 3 I believe.

After academy selections, gws, freo Rated around or before pick 12 and possibly the hawthorn academy selection you would be looking at pick 14 and pick 21 for pick 3. They would be in deficit.
Don’t know much about this draft but certain commentators who do say the talent tiers go top 2, top 8, top 30. GWS list manager recently came out suggesting their pick dropping back will make it harder to trade up now, they know they will now have to give up more.

Seriously?  Papley has become Cyril Rioli during this trade period!  Good player and certainly has pace and skill which we lack but he's not worth a top 10 pick.

I agree.  I'm not advocating we do it, but obviously Papley is open to the idea of playing for other clubs, so it might be an opportunity for us to sneak under the radar and get involved in the deal.

  • Demonland changed the title to Papley for Pick 3?

There's too many moving pieces to try and say that's what will happen though. With bids being matched or not, with the AFL bringing in new 'rules' about parking and trading picks, the leftover points deficit etc. Whatever happens, I still think us splitting the pick is a high possibility, and given our needs and Papley's 'uncertainty' it's a deal we could pursue.

Trade pick 3 for GWS 12 and 18, then use pick 12 for Papley, 18 in the draft.

(Should we be able to convince him to come to us)

I just reckon pick 3 is worth more than 12 & 18. i think we would need at least to stay in the top 10 for one of the picks.

Feels like it doesn't it? But points wise, 12 & 18 is worth more than 3 (by a little bit).

Yeah it does and i guess its where the points thing make sit a bit more complicated (im no expert in that field) , i just reckon on face value pick 3 should get you a pick in the top 10.. not sure how that happens. I tend to think we will split the pick now that we missed out on Elliott.

Change the word "in' to "at" and DL would be on fire.

I'm surprised the AFL hasn't forced us to change our name to avoid this type of confussion.

The Goschs Demons has a nice ring to it.

Baby steps.

Back on topic. I really don't know much about Papley but here are some of his first half of 2019 highlights.

Interesting how now that we’ve missed out on Elliott, Papley isn’t just looking at Carlton.

Is his nickname Basil?

Would be a better option than Elliott.

Younger, healthier, and his 37 goals (2019 season) as a 22 year old is more than Elliott's best haul of 35.

If we managed to land Papley and get pick around 9-12 back, it would be the best trade week that I could recall us ever having.

3 and 30 (Frost) for Papley and 9

No chance Hawthorn are giving us pick 30 for Frost.

Hawthorn didn't win premiership after premiership by trading second round draft picks for ordinary players.

We'll get Frost for a third round at best, but I wouldn't be surprised if Hawthorn offer us a 4th rounder given we low balled Frost.

Minor correction in that he is 23 but still, he is younger than I thought he was.

He will still more than likely get to Carlton, but I'd love for us to get involved.  He is just the sort of player we need.

Agreed but I don’t think Sydney will be keen on giving a first round pick back. If they really want Daniher Essendon will want two first round picks. I still think splitting the pick will get the job done. I’m quietly confident we can land Basil Papley.

If we get Tomlinson, Langdon, Papley and still have a pick in the first round we’ve done very well.

As one of the best small forwards in the game we need to be in the hunt. Our delivery into the forward 50 this year was terrible. We need a player who can capitalise on spilt balls in the forward 50. Whether it’s Papley, Taylor or Butler I dunno.

Hannan will be better injury free, Spargo too panicked, Dunkley/ Lochart still developing.

How are Sydney getting 9 given that pick is held by Carlton?

Yep sorry realised that after I posted

Definitely would need to remain in the top 12ish in the draft is we're giving up pick 3 for Papley. Maybe Sydney split pick 5 with GWS and give us say Papley and 11 (GWS) for pick 3 and 40

Then maybe they trade pick 3 and a second rounder to Essendon for Daniher? Just a thought

They end up essentially trading Papley and pick 5 for Daniher and pick 18

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
