Demons Grand Plan for Yarra Park Training HQ

Featured Replies

Had a look at Gosch Park area.

They could develop a warf and social club on the yarra.

Just walk under the freeway.

Be a great meeting place and people could ferry to the area of sporting and botanical.

Parks and waterways victoria would need to invest.

By the way saw rehabbers;

Tim smith, oscar Mcdonald, Michael Hibberd and Neville Jetta.

Hibs and jets working with Crossy. Clean at the ball and good foot skills.

Can't be far off.

Oscar working on kicking skills mainly the stab pass.

Tim marking well.

Would be great if we could make it happen?

I think we need help with $$$, and sadly our government, will not be giving us any help. like all the other clubs in the AFL.

Club have gone very quiet about this. Hope they are working on something.

They are, working hard on being quiet and waiting for us all to forget and move on.

The Yarra would be a fitting place for us to truly, go under.

Of course they have. Tipping they have finally realized the MCG precinct idea development is Disneyland stuff and now are waiting for an alternate proposal to sell to the fans. With no history of property acquisition or development I have grave doubts about our ability to pull it off.

That hasn’t worked either.

Interesting that you raise the Bentleigh club in a thread where many have lamented the absence of a social club.

I have little knowledge of the place but without pokies would it have survived and was it ever used as a social club?

Who the f cares about a social club? They wouldnt get more than 2 mice and a cockroach at a social club outside of match day. Not viable, not a priority, not need.

A good training ground, good indoor training facility, good admin centre. That's what is needed.

A football club from a sport that runs for 6 months of the year, during the coldest part, that has 40k members, has sworn off pokies and has just sold off a similar business should never be investing in a 'social club'.

Why not try venturing down to The Sporting Globe sometime on game day and see if you think the 'crowds' justify MFC investing in such an endeavour.

If developing then admin overlooking the yarra.

Would help them feel professional, proud and privileged.

The Club has officially dumped the Yarra Park plan. Pert said this in a pre game interview on radio. Still wants to create the base in the inner city sports precinct.

My bet is we stay at an upgraded Goschs Paddock and build nearby for gym, FD and admin centre.

I knew I shouldn't have opened this thread.  Just so depressing to be homeless.

Back to the drawing board.

My understanding is that Pert has spent his time on little else since starting. No stone unturned, although I think the Andrews govt used us a pawn at one stage.

East Melbourne society or whatever they are called can GAGF.

It was a silly idea and was never going to be approved. Too much loss of parkland, and too much local opposition.

Any idea of options on the drawing board?

But there was no loss of parkland.

Loss of car park land = loss of revenue

The original article referenced in the first page of this topic says "The Herald Sun can reveal the Demons are eyeing a prized parcel of parkland, in the northeastern corner of the MCG precinct, for a full-sized football oval".

The reality is not important when the perception is that open parkland, accessible to residents 24/7, will be lost and subsumed by a football club.

The idea of a building over the railway line was never going to work either.

Aren't the State Government looking at that over the rail lines, from Flinders Street to near the G?

A sporting oval is not the same as parkland, Red. Parkland is what is there currently. Despite our needs, changing the use of land on that part of Yarra Park was always going to be pushing the proverbial up a hill.

Oh well they have kept their parkland and they can watch their dogs deposit presents on it for others to step in.

  • NON-MFC: Round 02

The compromised AFL fixture will get another test this week with the first lot of teams getting a bye after only two matches. Despite this Round 2 starts off with two cracking games as the Hawks host the Swans at the G on Thursday Night and then on Friday Night the Crows host the Bulldogs at Adelaide Oval. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

The dominant storyline coming out of Round One for Sunday’s clash at Optus Stadium centres on the influence of the big men. The spotlight naturally falls on two elite ruckmen who, five years ago, shared the stage in Melbourne’s memorable premiership triumph.

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
