Just to put things in perspective on people saying that he is a bit of a reach. Hawthorn, Port, and Western Bulldogs are clubs all ready to pounce on Pickett in those early selections in the teens hence why we are set to use pick 10 on him. Hawthorn at 11 and Bulldogs at 13 are the ones who have put in a lot of work into him and ones that also invited him to draft night tonight.

I dont think we'll split 10 purely on the basis that he will be gone by mid teens.

So yes, we aren't the only ones willing to use an early pick on Kozzy.

Exactly ....todays ESPN final mock draft has the Hawks taking him the pick after us.

Hes not a bolter anymore hes a legit top 15 pick.

In the last couple of days a couple of media places ave said Geelong have cooled on trading their picks with the Dees too.

If we can split and get ports pick between the hawks and dogs i think we split (as picket or weightman will be there still). Otherwise go witht he flow.

So, a tiny small forward, even by small forward standards, who barely gets a touch and doesn't kick many goals? Surely we should just take the best available at 10 then get the best small forward at 28.

You'd think logic would dictate this, but for whatever reason in the past month when no football has been played, Pickett has rocketed up the projected draft positions.

If we MUST take a small forward so high and pass on best talent, then Weightman is a better option. He kicks far more goals (11 vs 2), and had double the amount of score assists. They're both similar for tackles (defensive pressure stat). It's a no-brainer comparing the two.

From the 3 champs matches:

Weightman - 11 goals, ave 6 score assists, 2 tackles

Pickett: 2 goals, ave 3 score assists, 2 tackles

I might be getting confused here, so apologies if so, but by the info here those numbers are incorrect. Are the 'champs' and the U18 carnival the same thing? If so then it's:

Weightman: 4 games, 9 goals, 2 score assists (totals), 2 tackles, 11 disposals (average). Source

Pickett: 3 games, 2 goals, 3 score assists (totals), 2.7 tackles, 13.7 disposals (average). Source

You keep asking the same question! ? Don’t you ever read the replies? ?

No, not really, since most of the posters on here spend endless pages on pretending how clever they are with their intellectual babble.

Weightman is a better player?

I think that you should switch your allegiance to Collingwood if the intellect of Demonlanders threatens you! ?

Question or statement?

I much prefer unintellectual babble myself

Yeah mindless babble is much more entertaining.

But is Pickett worth 10??? Is he??

But is he though?

Wasn't really referring to you... or your emoji cons.

It sounds like the bloke we took in the second round two years ago, and how's that working out? I know he's a much different player to Spargo, but the stats don't lie. If we are desperate for a small forward I'm sure we can find one at 28.

Maybe you will find  the answer  in a Charles Dickens novel??

I'm sorry no one is answering your question properly. I think you're right though I feel like Great Expectations would have the answer!

I'm as skeptical as anyone about picking such an unproven small prospect with pick 11, but given that it he seems to be close to a lock, I'm slowly managing to convince myself he's a gun in the making. We all know the art of drafting is picking the best player in five years time, which isn't necessarily reflected by under 18 championships stats. The recruiters have a lot more intel than us in this regard.

Pickett does appear to have some special traits that can't be taught - if he can learn the rest, he'll be a player. A calculated gamble (that may or may not massively backfire). If he turns out to be a gun, I'll never question our recruiting team again. However, I reserve the right to write weekly meltdown posts on here if he turns out to be a dud.

Interesting hearing Brendan McCartney in his draft-related article today talking about things he looks for in players, wondered if this may potentially relate to how we see Pickett:

For different reasons, neither Bontempelli nor Oliver was talked up as a top pick midway through his draft year.
“Bonti” wasn’t always in the game, but when he was you just thought “wow”.

I think this is the logic recruiters use.

Someone like ANB springs to mind. He's always around the contest with his elite running, but is never doing anything WOW

This convo really is getting  repetitive...and Im someone that can usually do a lot of repetition before I get sick of it.

Thank god the draft is tonight and this discussion can be put to bed one way or the other....at least for now.   I suspect though , sadly,  this convo may be ongoing for the next few years.

GF 2021... dees down by 2 points , 30 secs to play Jackson pack marks marks at CHF, pack falls over while he keeps his feet and wheels nonchalantly onto his left , kicks it 65 metres into the teeth of goal, pickett of the pack dribbles it home. THAT would finish this argument forever. May it be so.

I can see it now...

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
