I SAY AGAIN LEADER LOVED the masterful way he took a developing Sam Frost to account for an errant punch and love his Generalship! Jones can play next year. Viney same BUT MAY is the no no nonsense leader we haven't had since Ronald Dale Apologies Rob If this club is fair dinkum then need to make this change! MAY FOR CAPT! 3 Quote
Jaded No More 68,976 Posted June 30, 2019 Posted June 30, 2019 A bad look seeing him yell at teammates. I’m all for him giving constructive criticism, but fighting with teammates is poor leadership. He isn’t exactly perfect. Don’t throw stones and all that. 3 Quote

goodwindees 2,586 Posted June 30, 2019 Posted June 30, 2019 Well, if he’s going to start yelling at his Melbourne teammates, he’s going to be pretty bloody hoarse by the time he gets through all the insipid forwards, starting with Weideman, Hannan, Tim Smith & MacDonald. 3 4 1 Quote

Good God. I’m all for players giving instructions and leading. But May needs to take the heat of the game out of it. There’s a time and a place. Frost makes plenty of mistakes. He is a high risk high reward player. May yelling at him isn’t going to change that. May played another excellent game and I’m very happy with his inclusion. His leadership is obvious, but good leaders also need to know when to speak up and how. 6 1 Quote

Game was still on. Get the job done.... Quote

I didn’t have a problem with the 3/4 time discussion. I have a problem with yelling at a player mid game for a mistake. He will spend the rest of his career yelling if he has a go at every Melbourne player who totally [censored] things up. It happens that bloody often! 1 Quote
titan_uranus 25,255 Posted June 30, 2019 Posted June 30, 2019 None of us know for sure what May was talking about with Frost. It could well have been a specific thing discussed before or during the game which Frost messed up and May found disappointing. I rarely agree with anything Leigh Matthews says but I agreed with his comment that, if anything, May might have gone on about it too long, but it's impossible to know given we couldn't hear what was being said. I'll say one thing though: at three quarter time, neither Viney nor Jones looked like they wanted anything to do with it. Whether you agree with May or not, I find it unforgivably poor that neither captain got involved even in the slightest. 14 1 Quote

Good players, terrible bloody leaders. Oliver had to step in and separate them, which tells me two things: 1. May was being too aggressive 2. Oliver is a brave man stepping between May and Frost 1 1 2 Quote

goodwindees 2,586 Posted June 30, 2019 Posted June 30, 2019 I’m racking my brain trying to come up with one other player in 50 years of watching footy who so demonstrably and indiscreetly criticised a teammate on the field and within a quarter. Can anyone think of one? I can recall Ricoh used to wave his arms and look sad whenever teammates kicked poorly to him, but can’t recall ever seeing what May did today. Quote
darkhorse72 1,943 Posted June 30, 2019 Posted June 30, 2019 I should say his message was most likely spot on to Frost, but it should have been short and sharp. He went on too long hence why it becomes a bad look. 1 1 Quote
SFebes 4,884 Posted June 30, 2019 Posted June 30, 2019 No issue with May, about time we showed a bit of hardness instead of being nice, good teams of recent times were all hard on each other, STK GEEL HAW, more of it please, stop being [censored]. 2 Quote

Watts the matter 1,235 Posted June 30, 2019 Posted June 30, 2019 I didn't like the way he got right in his face, like they were about to come to blows. Has history of these kinds of things, I remember him and Tom Lynch with a similar incident. There are better ways to get your point across. 3 Quote

Not wrong but May's frustration highlights how poorly our coaching team is developing these players. Frost flies into packs and just randomly punches it. Zero strategy. Just chaos. 2-3 times a game it goes direct to an opponent. Today May lost his [censored] and held him to account. Make the opponent feel it, and get the ball to a position for your rovers to win it. Or hit the boundry/behinds. Frost does neither. And today appears to be the first time ever that Frost has been told not to punch the ball to nothinginess like an under13s player. Frost is a smart footballer that plays dumb. May is exactly the time of teammate he needs. 2 2 Quote
whatwhat say what 23,880 Posted June 30, 2019 Posted June 30, 2019 may is a recidivist in terms of his actions (suspension-prone, injury-prone, aggressive towards oppo and teammates) but fortunately is a good footballer he's not captaincy material, but obviously already looks more than capable of leading the backline and marshalling them with how to play 1 Quote
