Jones definitely will get another year. Deserves it too.

I would like us to shop around one of Trac or Brayshaw. I love them both dearly but we need to actively chase some elite ball users that can play wings. Our current wing situation is woeful.

Since we can’t (and shouldn’t anyway) trade our first round pick, the only way for us to get established talent is to trade established talent.

We need to strike while our window is open and we won’t win a flag if we don’t get some elite users and some speed.

He is not above the team. He is fast becoming a liability on the field. He fumbles a lot and kicks blindly. He needs 2 earn his spot or play @ Casey.

Cannot see Joel Smith getting delisted. He has a lot of talent, has potential as a key forward and is the son of a Melbourne legend.

Neal Bulleen will also get a new contract. Jones will get 1-2 more years.

Garlett and Lewis will go. No one else is a certainty to be delisted yet. I think the rest of the list will all be given a chance to prove themselves.

FWIW Stretch is very professional and I think they will keep him because we need more players with his ability to play wing/midfield.

Maybe overselling the story a bit 'hard'...

ANB has probably peaked to his limit...  and imo,  Stretch is catching up to him with endurance...  and might be ahead of ANB on footy.?

So maybe Stretch still has some improvement in him,  as he builds.

But I'm starting to agree that nibbler might be nearing his end,  as others like JKH and Stretch near his running power.

We cannot lose all these strong runners together...  But,  I see some overtaking others.   JKH is now a better footballer all-round, imo... than ANB.

Maybe ANB follows Bugg,  to some other team ?  And we replace him with a more skilled young player.

Agree with Garlett & Lew as obvious outs.

It’s rather early but (imo)

possibles Garlett Jkh Vandenburg (if he cannot comeback from his injury) Chandler (r)

gone Maynard Lewis (retired)

I think 5 spots is max off the list. We just need to get injured players reduced

Vandenberg is in his first year of a new 3 year deal he is zero chance of being delisted.

Chandler has done nothing wrong as a first year rookie to deserve being moved on.

joel smith being delisted or traded?? you guys have rocks in your head!

For a team that lacks any sort of athleticism across the park he is one that has it in spades and also showed to be a pretty accurate shot for goal, something none of our team can do. he is not only starting 22, but starting 18 and was proving that all pre-season.

crazy!

dude, we're 16th and you're talking about premiership windows? ffs

I listened to Whately speak to Buckley this morning.

Buckley was answering a question about the most talented players he has seen.

His reply was along the lines that most very successful greats of the game will always say that their gift of being able to work hard is a much bigger asset than their inherent or inherited skill.

In his case (I love Buckley but FIGJAM is still there underneath) he said his work ethic was very good and thats what got him onto Port Adelaides list and got him to Brisbane, his skills came later.

Petracca while looking hard at it, only goes hard occasionally, is full of talent and is not aiming to improve like James Harmes and dare I say it, Oscar Baker. I see that in Demonland Player of the Year, Oscar and Christian are tied on votes this year.

Im sure Carlton or North would relish having him and turning him into the footballer they can see he is.

I'd wouldn't trade or delist him he'll be another Hunt in the 4ward line. It'd be madness 2 get rid of him when we have so many NQRs who offer nothing.

Vanders needs 2b able 2 get on the park or else retire. Can't carry someone is permanently injured.

I've just updated the Contracts thread and posted my thoughts on possible list changes.

It may be a bit early but given our season is done it is relevant to look at possible changes.

The Contracts thread:

My thoughts on list changes that I posted in that thread:

I'm guessing we will lose quite a few Rookies.

Its hard to see a lot of the primary list players who are OOC this year getting an extension.  My thoughts:

  • Baker, Frost, Weideman will get new contracts.
  • J. Wagner, Garlett, J. Smith are 'maybe' depending on assessment of depth.
  • Stretch, Neal Bullen, Kennedy Harris at real risk of going.  They have been on our list for 4-5 years and not able to cement a regular 22 spot.  Can only keep them for so long.
  • Lewis, Maynard gone.
  • Jones - not sure.  Will challenge the list management team:  Nostalgia vs value add vs keeping a younger player out of the team/out of position.

We will get some good draft picks this year: a top 10 and a high second round pick so a chance to get some high end talent and skills.  Time to refresh.

Can they pay Weids for goals kicked?

JKH may get another year.

Pretty sure Jones will retire.

If they do he will earn more per game played than Tom Mc ?

No question he deserves it but more due to form from previous seasons as well as loyalty.

The problem is, will he get picked for many

games and will he be captain ?

Cant see him happy in the 2s.

ANB, Stretch and JKH are about all we have in terms of genuine runners. Hopefully Baker lifts into this category too. Until we develop or replace them I can't see us getting rid of any of them at this stage. We need to preserve them, or make them depth by adding better

Wagner, Maynard, Lewis, Garlett would have to be out from main list at end of year

T Smith, one/two others potentially from rookie list. And you'd have to think AVB is some sort of retirement arrangement potential

There's probably about 7 spots before any trades OR any call on/from Jones

I don't begrudge him another year if his selection is based on form but no guarantee of games.  If he earns selection for 14 games (at least) to get him to 300 great, if not so be it.

His 2020 selection should not put at risk a top 4 finish and a chance at the premiership or someone like Brayshaw played out of position or someone like Baker or Lockhart denied games.

To me he retires this year or gives up the co-captaincy, gets one more year and if his form warrants he is selected.  If not he plays in the VFL as Clarkson did with Roughy also a much loved champion, ex captain and loyal servant of his club.

It may sound ruthless but it is what professional clubs do.

Yes, agree with everything you have said. But the question was raised, should he get another year. Geelong, who I would consider a “professional” club did the same with Bartel to get him to the 300 mark.

After they had won 3 flags.

I'm not prepared to call on Maynard yet...  as I have learnt not too write-off players,  until having another good look at their games when they're traveling healthy.

Our inside 1st touch players are looking fragile atmo.  Viney, Jones...  so, I wouldn't jump too quick on big-bodied Maynard.

Many here have had Egg all over them,  Re ANB a few years back,  and also AVB.   Even If it was only for a couple of years each...  they both helped us up the ladder,  and into a finals series.

And i sense the same will be said of JKH,  in a few years.

Happy for Jones to get another year but not with a guarantee of at least 14 games for the 300.

I recall Geelong's 'retirement' of their champions a bit differently.  The list was getting 'old' so they retired players including Chapman and Stevie J who went to other clubs for several more years - similar to Clarkson with Mitchell, Lewis and Hodge.  They kept Bartel on a 1+1 year contract 2016/2017.  During 2016 he reached 300 games.  They left him in limbo at the end of 2016 for the + 1 year and as I recall it all got a bit ugly.  Jimmy retired at the end of 2016.  tbh I don't see much sentiment in Geelong's handling of its champs or Bartel.  They did what was best for the club.

Dees will do everything they can to get NJ to 300 and he deserves it.

I don’t see what others see in Joel Smith when it comes to his skills and ability and he definitely has no potential to be a key forward.

Not saying he doesn't deserve to reach 300.

Not saying he shouldn't get another contract.

Just saying it shouldn't come with a guarantee of at least 14 games.

We haven't won a premiership in 55 years.  imv the club owes supporters who have loyally stuck fat for many decades, to do everything in its power to get the next one.  I would expect the club to put its and supporter interests ahead of any individual.

Lets hope we do both:  Jones to 300 and a tilt at the premiership in 2020!!

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
