I like it, we need the run but equally we need the experience and on field leadership. they can have their future second rounder back for him.

or pick 8 for Smith and 11

So now Melbourne have picks 3 and 8 in this year's draft after pick swap with North. Do the Demons have an ace up their sleeve for a player trade we haven't heard about?

Ah yes. The basket case is pulling aces again. Thanks potato.

So assuming we take Hayden Young and cody Weightman in the draft, our best 22 for Round 1 could look something like this:

B:       Jetta               May                  Lever

HB:    Young             Petty                Hibberd

C :      Langdon         Viney               Salem

HF:     Petracca        McDonald       Melksham

F:       Fritsch             Weideman      Weightman

R:      Gawn               Oliver               Brayshaw

Int:    Tomlinson       Harmes          Hannan        VandenBerg

Emg:  Preuss            O McDonald       Neal-Bullen       Hunt

How the hell do we land him? Is he an FA or do we need to pull a pick out of our [censored]?

Would love him for the record. @Patches O’houlihan is spot on. Not only does he still have something to give a team like us, his experience and leadership would be invaluable for our team that so desperately lacks it.

Maybe 8 for Smith and 11?  That also takes the risk of McGuinnes being bid on early for the Hawks

And Frosty could be the steak knives!  Joking...

Deals not done: Daniher, Papley, Martin.

Carlton miss out on Oakley and Martin. Only bring in Betts.

The brilliance that is SOS strikes again.

I think Ross Oakley is well past it anyway.

Very surprised the Giants couldn't get a deal done for pick 3. I find it hard to see them satisfying us with the picks they have, so not sure what the point of trading up to 6 was about.

Disappointed we didn't pick up a key forward, but I'd be interested to see what list spots we will have available post the draft, perhaps there's a delisted free agent or rookie we are looking at.

So much for Dorodo's big man talk that Essendon would 'hit the trade period hard'.  He likes to win the battles but ends up losing the war.  They gained Tom Cutler and Andrew Phillips and their first draft pick is #31.

Carlton have also come away empty handed (well they have favourite son Eddie back).

Big trade fail for both clubs.

Hard to see either team improving much next year.

Apparently we're drafting 2 kids, both going by the name Basil, with our 2 first rounders.

As long as neither of them is fawlty.

Did we really?

just pointing out we didn’t use it and we have two in top 8.

Good going

Is Martin a PSD chance?

Agree that we've done well, happy we held our nerve and didn't swap #3 with GWS.

Could also nominate for national draft

Sun's could easily just delist Martin and Carlton take him as a delisted free agent.

So we head to the draft with picks 3, 8 and 97.

Think we'll keep 3 unless GWS come to us with an offer we can't refuse on draft night. With 3 I think Young has more upside, could play wing/hbf next year.

Using 8 on Weightman seems a big reach when most phantoms have him in the 15 - 30 range and one of Ash, Stephens, Kemp or Flanders will likely still be available.

wonder who we will use 97 on.

Why would that do that when the were at an impass at the trade table?

Even if they (and us) have no intention in taking him in the PSD they should make them squirm a bit

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
