Meanwhile, Melbourne key defender Steven May is pushing to make his comeback in the VFL this weekend.

The former Gold Coast co-captain has been sorely missed over the past eight weeks with a groin injury, but is finally ready to play.

May is expected to step out with Casey against Werribee on Saturday and then ramp up his case for a senior game from next week.

May and Jake Lever loom as huge boosts to a depleted Melbourne side which has won only three games for the season.

The Demons are also happy with his progress off the field after the full back was spoken to for breaking team rules last month.

Melbourne prohibits players from drinking alcohol when they’re injured but May was spotted having a few beers with friends at a Richmond pub.

Just saw that. Im sure they are fuming over at bomber land. I do HOPE we're smarter with May and don't rush him to appease the supporters. Id rather he was long term right.

Who said they weren't smart? They followed a cause of treatment/recovery that has worked in plenty of cases. But not all. Didn't work for Jo. Nothing to do with mismanagement, everything to do with the uniqueness of each person's physical makeup.

Well... I think it’s fair to say that neither of us know the answer to that. One of the questions they have to answer is a bit like our Joel Smith  question, in that they played daniher again 5 days after his first jlt.

All I can say is if we rush May back  and he does his groin again I’m going to feel there was a lack of caution shown. Which is how I ,and many of us, felt about Joel. People make mistakes at all levels of professional endeavours and after the smith debacle  I’d just rather we err on the side of caution here. With both Lever and May.

If you follow best practise it's not a mistake - regardless of outcomes.

I must have misunderstood what Mahoney said at the time? Or maybe he deliberately misled us? Or maybe both the media and public don't give a stuff for research and journalistic standards nowadays? I dunno, but I'm close to giving up.

Melksham with a setback. I’m telling you right now that anyone at Melbourne who gets a foot injury is basically doomed.

Put him on ice for 2020.

Can’t see him playing this year and maybe never, for us at least. Horrible mismanagement.

Surely Joel Smith doesn’t just have a “groin injury” of the stock standard variety. Some more details about what is actually wrong with his groin might make me less worried that our medical team are a bunch of drunk amateurs. Does he have OP?! Has his groin fallen off? What’s happening?!

I think someone posted about 427 pages ago that it was OP, which explained why he went back on the ground during the JLT. It’s an overuse injury so sending him back on wasn’t going to cause any more damage. Still wasn’t a great look.

As above, reported as OP. Thus the length of the time out, though as reported, seems to have turned the corner on the way back to playing/fitness.

Whole medical staff would be the worst in the comp. Every year we seem to have more injuries than any other team.

Yes lord forbid we get injuries in a contact sport. We'd be better off just not playing anyone.

We are often told that a player is out for 2-3 weeks but we now know that our medical wan.ers really mean 10-12 weeks with a possibly of more. Yes we don't get the steak knife as a freeby. Surely Pert must find out what is going on or what's no going on with long term injuries.

Er ...

Most of that list is "Test", so presumably playing. It also includes Lewis, even though he played last week.

Apart from the two young long-termers, list is Jetta, Melksham, Smith and VDB. Plus Maynard who has a week or so with concussion.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
